2018 K2 Subculture Snowboard Review

Board: K2 Subculture

Size: 158

Camber Option: Lifted Camber Baseline. A lifted flat camber with rocker in the tip and tail.

Bindings: K2 Indy

Stance: 21.5 Wide 18 Negative 15 Goofy

Boots: K2 Thraxis Size 10

My Weight: 188lbs

Resort: Arapahoe Basin

Conditions: Sunny bluebird skies, warm temps, no wind, and snow that was soft yet fast.

Flex: It has that middle of the road all mountain flex that is playful yet powerful. You get some play in the tips which is accentuated by the rocker but not dominate and over powering. Under foot you get stability that is smooth and fluid with just a hair of play. Torsionally the flex is there but neither overly abundant or underwhelming, just a perfect blend to help steer the board.

Stability: K2 boards have a certain style of dampness and liveliness to them. This board is no different. It can plow through a chunder field or roll through mogul/rutted out terrain and not buck you. At speeds you don’t notice any chatter.

Ollies: You can easily load this board up to pop with it. It has a skate style pop to it due to the rocker in the tips but the boost from the flat camber between the feet.

Pop On Jumps: No matter what sized jump you want to hit this board has you covered. So don’t sweat it and go dominate the jump line with some easy to initiate pop.

Butterability: You can get over the tips with ease due to the rocker. This helps with balancing your body over the board as you get buttery. There is a bit of rebound which you will feel when you’re popping out of something, but not enough to force you to man handle the board.

Jibbing: The rocker locks into presses with ease and you can snap out of any nose/tail combo you want. Going sideways you’ll notice how the board locks into a slide and hugs the rail but doesn’t sag.

Carving: Set it and forget it. This is the type of board where you can lay a trench if you want it or skid a turn. It doesn’t falter on edge. Overall it’s a board that engages a turn with minimal effort but will let you snap out of a turn if you want it to.

Rider in Mind: Guy that wants a little camber and rocker in their life as they ride all mountain freestyle.

Personal Thoughts: This board has changed a little over the years and now it’s finally hit its mark. You get a bit of setback which is nice if you want some more nose than tail, but you also get a more twinish riding board that can dominate the whole all mountain aspect of snowboarding. It has snap which makes it fun to ollie fences and slow signs, but it is an easy to engage skate like snap. Overall it’s one of those boards that you can call a quiver killer.

K2 Subculture 2015 - 2014 Review by The Good Ride

The K2 Subculture offers up K2’s newer micro camber or hybrid camber tech that felt a little like a softer much more mellow Slayblade. So the hybrid camber gives the board a much more balanced springy all park to all mountain freestyle ride. We liked this board but it was missing some of the magic that the K2 Happy Hour had. The 2015 is pretty much the same ride as the 2014.\

Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews.  We do make money from the “Where To Buy” links, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average riders’ perspective.

Size: 156
Days:  1
Conditions: Really good groomed sierra snow that’s just fun to ride in.
Riders:James, Peter, Jimbo
Boots:Burton SLX, Burton Imperial, Nike Kaiju
Bindings:K2 Hurrithane
Set Up:  Centered 23″ wide

On Snow Feel: Stable fun, pretty poppy and playful and a pretty good changeup to the flat to rocker profile boards in K2’s line. It didn’t feel catchy at all and felt closer to the flat to rocker shapes instead of camber.

Powder: We had now powder but it didn’t really feel like a good pow board. It would probably be a little better than camber but not as good as some of their flat to rocker profiles when centered but when set back it won’t be bad. The float from the Turbo Dream or Raygun is easier but this could work if you like more of a camber feel because there is more pop.

Turn Initiation and Carving: so this had mixed reviews with turn initiation and carving.  Jimbo and I liked it a lot on a carve for a twin but felt it was a little off when it came to quick edge to edge turns. Medium radius turns were pretty fun.  Peter just wasn’t liking any of it really. I think for most it will be a nice improvement over the flat to rocker shapes and it did have some nice spring out of the turn.

Speed: Pretty stable at speed but no bomber either.  It’s good enough to keep some speed in the flats and it’s not bad for big steep wide open Mammoth runs we tried the board on.

Uneven Terrain: Not bad in what little bumpy terrain that we could find.

Edge Hold: Just middle ground edge hold and even in the small patches of harder snow at the top we could feel the grip isn’t bottomless.

Flex: Pretty middle ground all mountain-ish flex.

Switch: With the centered stance it was pretty easy switch.

Jibbing: Jimbo and Peter had fun with some mellow obstacles in the jib park but it’s not really a dedicated jib board.  You can for sure stop in there though.

Pipe: It felt ok in the pipe but I personally thought it would be better than it was. It just felt the middle ground and didn’t impress. Maybe with a little more edge hold I would of felt secure.

Jumps: Pretty good spring here and it was fun to ollie off natural terrain around the mountain.  Centered up it’s pretty fun hitting kickers too and it will hold pretty well.

All in all, we felt the K2 Subculture was close to being a really fun board but instead just landed at fun. I think with a few tweaks this could be a more mellow but equal alternative to the K2 Happy Hour.

Height, Weight And Boot Size (for Boards, Boots & Bindings): 6,15' / 200 lbs / 10.5 US boot

This board has changed a little over the years and last year was finally hit its mark. First of all, I have to say reading thegoodride's review after buy it, I'm affraid of this board. After, I saw the year of that review. That board completely changed:

Lifted Camber Baseline. A lifted flat camber with rocker in the tip and tail. This board is very hoppy, and the ollie bar only makes it that much more springy. You’ll spend all day looking for anything you could turn into a jump.

This version is really a twin, but the front foot position more delayed and have the nose slightly higher than the tail. However, you have the possibility to center your stance and get it to behave almost like a Real twin

But the board in also very stable at higher speeds, and is great for carving. Overall this board lives up to its hype, and is a great all mountain board, for intermediate riders looking to have fun. Not sure you could get a better all mountain board at this price, nor a better built board. If you find it on sale, no doubt, buy it!

I bought this board after having a K2 Wisdom Wide for over ten years. The camber profile (lifted flat between the feet) seemed like it would be the most similar to a traditional camber, which is what I was used to. The board rode decent, but not great in harder conditions. I had a better time with it out west than here in the southeast. The edge old would probably be on the bottom side of average for me. West coast park rats would probably like this board a whole lot better than I did. I would not recommend this board for the east coast harder conditions.

K2 Subculture Snowboard 2017

K2 Subculture Snowboard

Like to carve hard and power in and out of your turns? K2 may have developed their Precision Baseline just for you. It has all of the tracking capabilities of a camber board but without that irritating hooking that can occur. It does this by spreading out the leading edge contact over a wider area so that when pressure is applied it disperses out more evenly. With little effort and a light touch you will have a faster response time than emergency services.

Maybe getting a little bit of hang time is more your thing?

The benefits of K2’s range in flat boards are easy to be seen with easy straight tracking and unparalleled precision but sometimes you can lose a bit of that ‘pop’ that is desired for those side features you might like to hit. That’s where the Subculture’s lifted base comes in. Keeping all the delicious goodies from above, it maintains the spring of a camber board but lifting the entire baseline between the the bindings. Welcome back amplitude! Oh and is that an in built Ollie Bar? Why yes it is. Come to think of it, you may very well spend more time in the air than on the snow. May as well not go… if you’re allergic to fun.

Features:

  • Lifted Baseline - A raised midsection for an active camber feel
  • Ollie Bar - Carbon midsection ollie power
  • Sintered 4000 - Fast, durable and easy to repair
  • Precision Lifted Baseline - Smooth blended tips with a lifted flat mid-section
  • True twin outline
  • Setback stance

All-mountain charger with a freestyle touchThe Subculture is an all-mountain charger without trade-offs, but within its core itâ€s also a freestyle board. This means the Subculture can handle subculture snowboard terrain and high speeds like every other subculture snowboard slayer, but with plenty of pop and stability itâ€s not scared of flying as well. As you would expect the subculture is not just a piece of wood and thanks its high performance feeling to a variety of technologies like an ICG/Triax classing and carbon addatives.

Riding style
Confident riders that enjoy going fast trough every terrain and are not afraid of spending some meters above instead of on the snow.

Shape
The setback twin shape is mostly twin but with a slightly longer nose than tail, subculture snowboard, this improves float in deeper snow but still gives you the option of riding switch.

Profile
The Precision Lifted Baseline profile has smoothly blended tips that raise earlier but less steep than with an additional camber board, with a raised midsection for an active camber feel. This gives the board predictable pop and a precise edge initiation and hold that is more forgiving and provides more float than classic camber.

Flex
A Slightly more than medium flex provides you with the stability and response to go fast while still feeling playful and loose subculture snowboard for technical freestyle moves at higher speeds.

Construction
This board is loaded with tech, ICG means it has carbon integrated into the fiberglass reducing overall weight and creating a super smooth release of power while increasing pop and liveliness. While the carbon web boosts the feel and energy return of the board. A Triaxial glass laminate with diagonal layers that stiffen the board torsionally, subculture snowboard. While the carbon web boosts the feel and energy return of the board. A Triaxial glass laminate with diagonal layers that stiffen the board torsionally. Giving you improved edge hold and increased stability for those off-axis landings and at speed needs. This is
