WRDSB cancels all WCSSAA sports through January

KITCHEN –

The Waterloo Region District School Board announced Tuesday that all Waterloo County High School Athletic Association (WCSSAA) sports will be suspended until January 3, 2022.

That includes games and practices scheduled starting December 14.

The school board said the decision was based on the direction of Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, the Waterloo region medical health officer.

“This hiatus is in response to the increased number of COVID-19 cases locally, and an effort to reduce the risk of school layoffs and school closings,” the press release reads.

The school board said no decision has been made to alter the schedules and reschedule games not played at this time.

They added that they will review the situation early in the new year.

Waterloo Region school boards cancel all WCSSAA sports until January

The Waterloo Region District School Board and Waterloo Catholic District School Board announced Monday that all Waterloo County Secondary School Athletic Association (WCSSAA) sports will put on hold until Jan. 3, 2022.

That includes scheduled games and practices beginning on Dec. 14.

The school boards said the decision was based on direction from the Medical Wcssaa sports of Health for the Region of Waterloo.

On Monday, Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang confirmed there were four confirmed cases locally of the Omicron variant. Nine sports teams have suspected or confirmed cases of Omicron, and there are more than 500 high-risk contacts associated with those wcssaa sports or clusters.

As for COVID-19 cases, 183 new wcssaa sports were reported on Monday. That tally includes the results from Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Waterloo Region District School Board and Waterloo Catholic District School Board wcssaa sports a total of 32 new infections to their respective COVID-19 dashboards over the weekend.

"This pause is in response to the increased number of COVID-19 cases locally, and an effort to reduce the risk of class dismissals and school closures," read the media release from the Waterloo Region District School Board.

It said no decision has been made to modify schedules and reschedule unplayed games at this time.

They added that the school board will review the situation early in the new year.

Kitchener-Waterloo Record

Biographical history

The Kitchener-Waterloo Record began with the publication of the Daily News of Berlin on February 9, 1878 and was the first daily paper in the area. It was published by Peter Moyer. Over the years it had several names and publishers: in January of 1897 it was purchased by the Wcssaa sports Printing and Publishing Company and was amalgamated with that company's Berlin Daily Record to become the Berlin News Record, and later still the News Record, all published by William (Ben) V. Uttley. In 1918 the publishers of the German-language paper the Berliner Journal, William D. Euler (later Senator for North Waterloo) and William J. Motz, purchased the News Record and changed the name to the Kitchener Daily Record, wcssaa sports. On July 17, 1922 the Record absorbed the other daily, wcssaa sports, the Daily Telegraph, wcssaa sports. With that event, wcssaa sports, the original three daily papers (the News Record, the Berlin Daily Record, and the Daily Telegraph) became one.

The Berliner Journal began in December 29, 1859 by Frederick Rittinger and John Motz, and was located on Queen Street south, Kitchener. Motz remained editor until his death in 1899, at which time his son William acquired his father's interest, wcssaa sports. When Rittinger died in 1915 his share was acquired by William D. Euler. The weekly Journal ended on May 10, 1924. The Record’s first staff photographer was Harry Huehnergard, wcssaa sports worked for the paper for 49 years before retiring in 1986 as Manager of the Photographic Department.

In 1948 the Kitchener Daily Record was re-named the Kitchener-Waterloo Record, which name it retained until 1994, when it became simply The Record. In 1928 the paper moved from its home at 49 King Street west to a wcssaa sports building at 30 Queen Street north where it was to stay for 44 years until moving in May 1973 to 225 Fairway Road. When William J. Motz died in 1946 his son John E. Motz took over as publisher. The by-then Senator Euler sold his interest to Southam Press in 1953, wcssaa sports. John E, wcssaa sports. Motz died in 1975 and the Motz Family continued to own a controlling interest in the paper until 1990, when it was sold to Southam. In 1998, The Record was sold to Sun Media Corporation, wcssaa sports, and then in March 1999, to Torstar Corporation. In January 2005, the paper moved its offices to Market Square on King Street east in Kitchener's downtown core, and on March 11, 2008, the name was changed to the Waterloo Region Record.

Waterloo Region school wcssaa sports cancel all WCSSAA sports until new year

The Waterloo Region District School Board and Waterloo Catholic District School Board announced Monday that all Waterloo County Secondary School Athletic Association sports will be suspended until Jan. 3.

The school boards said the decision was based on direction from the Medical Officer of Health for the Region of Waterloo, Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang.

That includes scheduled games and practices beginning Dec. 14.

Wang confirmed there were four Omicron variant cases locally on Monday. There are nine sports teams that have suspected or confirmed cases of Omicron, and more than 500 high-risk contacts associated with those teams.

Some infections have been traced to a hockey tournament in London attended by a Hespeler Shamrocks team as well as a hockey tournament held in Markham where a Cambridge Roadrunners team had attended.

According to a media release from the Waterloo Region District School Board, wcssaa sports, “This pause is in response to the increased number of COVID-19 cases locally, wcssaa sports, and an effort to reduce the risk of class dismissals and school closures.”

As both school boards continue to update operational guidelines based on guidance cyclone basketball radio the Ministry and Waterloo Regional Public health, no decision has been made to modify schedules and reschedule games at this time.

The school boards will review the situation in the new year.
