Orange Bowl swag for Badgers: Gifts include televisions and recliners

"Obie, the Orange Bowl mascot, welcomes the Badgers has they arrive in Miami on Sunday.

College football's postseason has been underway for a few weeks now, which means players have the opportunity to stuff their post-Christmas stockings with bowl swag.

If Wisconsin's players need a bike, television, headphones, gaming system or recliner, those items - plus more - are available and can be selected from their gift suite.

The suite is a portable store where players browse through a variety of products and then choose goodies that can be shipped to any address. Plus, they'll receive a Tourneau watch, a Lyfe brand hat and a Ice Shaker water bottle and shaker cup

But wait, doesn't the NCAA frown on these extra benefits? Not quite.

The NCAA, which loves its sponsors, allows each bowl to award up to $550 worth of gifts to 125 participants per school. Schools can, and usually do, buy additional packages that they can distribute to participants beyond that 125 limit.

So even before the Badgers (12-1) play Miami (10-2) in the Orange Bowl on Saturday, the players are winning.

College Football Playoff score: Georgia routs Michigan in Orange Bowl, advances to national championship game for Alabama rematch

Michigan observations: What will it take for the Wolverines to win on this stage?

Unless it involves confetti and a Gatorade bath, no satisfying ending exists for a season like the one Michigan just had.

Would you rather have your heart ripped out or your teeth kicked in? Does it matter? These are the questions that occur during a blowout like Michigan’s 34-11 Orange Bowl loss to Georgia, a demolition that ranks among the worst postseason losses in program history.

So where do the Wolverines go from here? Here are five thoughts.

On Michigan’s scar tissue, a year of strain and remembering what got you here

A year ago, there was no ending. It just stopped.

A nightmare that felt like it might never end, a 2-4 season that somehow looked worse — suddenly and almost without warning, ended amid COVID-19 disarray as Michigan’s football program limped into 2021 battered, bruised and without a shred of confidence.

Michigan football has had low moments before — as far as on-field satisfaction with the product goes, the vibe from the support base on Dec. 31, 2020, was about as bad as it’s been.

If you forget what you went through to get here, was it even worth it in the first place?

“Guys are disappointed,” Michigan senior safety Brad Hawkins said bluntly Friday night after Michigan’s nightmarish 34-11 loss to Georgia in the national semifinals.

Georgia’s dominance, lack of celebration are good signs for Alabama game

Oh, there they are. The team that ran regular-season opponents through every button on the blender this season. The team with the smothering defense stuffed with enough pro prospects to make you wonder at times, “Does it really matter who plays quarterback?” The team that many figured at the outset of this season was either finally going to win a national championship for the first time in 41 years or slam its head against the wall again because, damn it, the Evil Empire just won’t fall.

We learned something about Georgia Friday night. Four weeks after getting run over by Alabama in the SEC championship game, which had led some to wonder if the Bulldogs really were all that, they responded as only great teams do. They took apart their next opponent. Poor, Michigan.

Georgia won by a lopsided score of 34-11, It could’ve been so much worse — and maybe most impressive of all, Georgia then acted like nothing great had been achieved. Not yet. Because they were at this point four years ago and it didn’t end well.

An inspired Orange Bowl performance gives Georgia one more bite at Alabama

There was red confetti. There was a stage, a trophy ceremony, hats passed out with the word “CHAMPS” emblazoned on them. And Freddie Mercury’s voice intoned over the speakers as the Georgia football team took in below.

We are the champions

No time for losers

Because we are the champions

And it all felt so … wrong.

“Champs? Not at all,” said Nakobe Dean, the Georgia star linebacker. “Job’s not finished. We didn’t do everything we did this whole season just to win the Orange Bowl. So the job’s not finished.”

Good. The right attitude. And notable because Dean and his teammates could have said the usual BS about enjoying this win and not thinking about Alabama yet, but everyone would know that was BS, and it’s probably time to stop pretending Alabama is just another opponent. Does Georgia become Charlie Brown, inevitably falling on its butt when Lucy pulls the football away? Perhaps. But that can be the subject for the next 10 days.

First, appreciate what the Bulldogs did on the final night of 2021, capping a nearly-perfect year with basically a perfect game.

‘Tis the season of swag.

In keeping with tradition, B5Q’s mother site SB Nation published its annual review of the best and not-so-best bowl game gifts for players on Tuesday.

I love bowl swag announcement day. It’s up there with the announcements of the games, and slightly ahead of the actual games themselves in my favorite part of the bowl season.

Let’s take a look at this year’s Orange Bowl haul, bestowed upon the Badgers in their first postseason trip to Miami. Here are the unit grades:

Tourneau Watch (B-)

What is an event without a shapely timepiece to commemorate it by? Tourneau has been supplying the Orange Bowl with eminently sellable watches for the past few years. Want a bowl watch of your own? You’ve got almost 30 choices available now on Ebay!

LYFE Brand Hat (A-)

Miami sports and streetwear designer LYFE Brand is kicking in a hat. Neat. As a power bald, I appreciate a quality hat.

Ice Shaker Water Bottle and Shaker Cup (A)

Ice Shaker is A water bottle and protein shaker company owned by a Gronk brother featured on Shark Tank. I am 200 percent on board for this and have updated my Christmas list accordingly.

Gift Suite (A++++)

The gift suite is the “open this last” of bowl swag. For the uninitiated, each bowl bestows upon attendees a bevvy of gifts, all with a sufficiently “the NCAA is super-dumb” artificial limit of $550 per person. Morgan Moriarty breaks it down pretty well in the SB Nation piece, but sufficed to say, it’s as random as one would expect from the world’s most hilarious “amateur” organization this side of the IOC.

Basically, bowls present to attendees a cornucopia of swag that they can “buy” using a point system. In the past, these have ranged from headphones (two points) to recliners and big-screen TVs (eight points) to a Ford F250 Super-Duty (eleventy-hundred points ... OK, maybe not). It’s a way to introduce choice and variety into the system and the bowls are even nice enough to ship the choices so that 80 or so twenty-somethings don’t have to check their recliners onto the team plane.

OK, commentariat. What would be your dream bowl swag package?

Gift Suite (A++++)

The gift suite is the “open this last” of bowl swag. For the uninitiated, each bowl bestows upon attendees a bevvy of gifts, all with a sufficiently “the NCAA is super-dumb” artificial limit wisconsin badgers orange bowl hat $550 per person. Morgan Moriarty breaks it down pretty well in the SB Nation piece, but sufficed to say, it’s as random as one would expect from the world’s most hilarious “amateur” organization this side of the IOC.

Basically, altrincham golf course scorecard present to attendees a cornucopia of swag that they can “buy” using a point system. In the past, these have ranged from headphones (two points) to recliners and big-screen TVs (eight points) to a Ford F250 Super-Duty (eleventy-hundred points . OK, maybe not), wisconsin badgers orange bowl hat. It’s a way to introduce choice and variety into the system and the bowls are even nice enough to ship the choices so that 80 or so twenty-somethings don’t have to check their recliners onto the team plane.

OK, commentariat. What would be your dream bowl swag package?

Orange Bowl swag wisconsin badgers orange bowl hat Badgers: Gifts include televisions and recliners
