GROVE CITY - The Grove City College women's water polo team aims to return to the top of the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Division III conference this spring as the Wolverines feature eight returning letterwinners.

Grove City returns four of its top offensive threats from the season in junior Sophia Melanson, junior Elaine Miller, sophomore Michelle Danley and sophomore Reese Trauger.

Melanson led Grove City with 17 assists and added nine goals from her 2-meter position in A two-year starter for the Wolverines, Melanson will be a key part of the lineup at both ends of the pool again in

Miller joins Melanson as a returning two-year starter in the Grove City lineup for head coach Jocelyn Bernhardt. Miller, the CWPA Division III East Rookie of the Year, fired in 19 goals last season. She graf wheeled hockey bag 66 career goals in two seasons at Grove City.

Grove City opens its season today by hosting CWPA Division III foe Wittenberg at 1 p.m. The Wolverines will then host western Pennsylvania rival Mercyhurst at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Grove City won the first game,while Geneva rebounded for a win in the second game. Both schools are members of the Presidents' Athletic Conference but Saturday's games are considered non-conference.

Grove City took the lead for good in the opener by erupting for four runs in the third inning. GREENVILLE - The Thiel Tomcats' men's lacrosse team defeated the Franciscan Barons,Friday evening in a non-conference matchup.

The Tomcats struck first with a goal just into the game. The Barons responded, scoring two goals to take a lead with left in the first quarter. Thiel then began a run, scoring five unanswered goals through the beginning of the second quarter to take a lead. The teams traded goals to go into the half with a Tomcats' lead.

In the second half, Franciscan cut into Thiel's lead, outscoring the Tomcats in the third quarter to cut Thiel's lead to Early in the fourth quarter, the Barons scored two straight goals to make it a one goal game. In the final 10 minutes, Bennett Medyn and Dan Senisi scored two insurance goals as the Tomcats went on to win

For the Tomcats, Bennett Medyn led the game with four goals. Medyn also added five groundballs. Jeffrey Karnoff and Pat Hartnett both notched multiple goals (two and three, respectively) and multiple assists (both with two). Karnoff finished with four groundballs as well. Selom Kalin-Samlan recorded two goals and an assist. Sheldon Bourdeau tied the team lead with five groundballs. Goalkeeper Jason Masciantonio moved to on the season in a complete game effort with 11 saves.

For the Barons, Daniel Clayton and Gavin Cook recorded three goals apiece. Cook also finished with three assists. Luke Barnes led the team with five groundballs. Goalkeeper Micah Eby notched 22 saves.

The Tomcats will look to stay undefeated next Sunday (March 21) as they travel to Westminster to take on the Titans in a non-conference contest. The game is scheduled noon.


BEAVER FALLS - Thiel lost its season opener to the Geneva Golden Tornadoes on the road Friday,

Thiel won a pair of singles matches on the day. Sara Haritos defeated Emily Grove, at fourth singles while Payton Blankenbeckley beat Laura Lin Comolloat fifth singles.

Blankenbeckley also thiel college winterfest softball with Allyson Stanley for an win over Kaylee McCall and Mady Paquet at second doubles.

The Tomcats will return to action Tuesday when they face the Grove City Wolverines on the road. The match is set to begin at p.m.
