Texas high school football: This week's top matchups around the Panhandle

PALO DURO VS. CAPROCK

The Dons and Longhorns will battle on Friday night in a pivotal matchup in the race for fourth-place and the final playoff spot in District A Division I.

Both programs enter the game with district records and are coming off of a loss from last week. Palo Duro was taken down by Amarillo High after a hard-fought first half while Caprock has lost two straight to Tascosa () and Lubbock Coronado ().

A win for Caprock would be monumental in terms of the race for fourth place because it finishes off the regular season next week against Lubbock High. Palo Duro, on the other hand, will take on an up-and-down Lubbock Monterey squad to conclude its schedule.

CANYON AT DUMAS

Canyon (, ) will travel to Dumas (, ) riding a seven-game winning streak that most recently included a offensive explosion in a wild district-opening win over Pampa last Friday night.

Dumas has won three straight by a combined score of and appear to be playing their best football of the season following a shutout victory over a hard-nosed Hereford program.

The Demons enter Friday's game riding a game district win streak that stretches back to before the current four-team District A Division I structure. The last time that Canyon defeated Dumas was back in when the Eagles spoiled the Demons drive for an undefeated regular season.

PAMPA AT HEREFORD

The Harvesters head to Hereford following their loss to Canyon at home last Friday night with their eyes set on claiming their first district win of the campaign.

Pampa had won six straight before its loss last week while Hereford had a three-game winning streak snapped with a debilitating road loss to Dumas last Friday. The Herd will try to get back on track this week in a game whose loser has a high chance of finishing last in the district standings.

The Harvesters won last season's head-to-head matchup and have won two straight over the Whitefaces. Before their current two-game streak, Pampa had lost eight straight meetings to Hereford dating back to

SPEARMAN AT FRIONA

Spearman (, ) enters Friday night riding a two-game win streak over district dwellers Highland Park () and Dimmitt ().

On the other hand, Friona (, ) was before a two-game losing streak to No. 3 Childress () and No. 9 Canadian () knocked them out of the unbeaten ranks. The Chieftains are averaging points per game while the Lynx are averaging per outing.

Spearman defeated Friona last season and has won the contest two out of three times since the new district realignment.

STRATFORD AT VEGA

No. 5 Stratford (, ) will once again face tough competition as they aim for their fifth straight win following a shutout of previously-ranked No. 10 Gruver. The Elks have outscored their last four opponents and are allowing just points per game during the win streak.

Vega (, ) was also ranked in the Top 10 at one point this season but has fallen down the board after losses to Spearman () and Gruver (). The Longhorns have won three of their last four heading into Friday and defeated Booker last week.

Stratford had won 13 straight over Vega as a program before the Longhorns double-overtime victory over the Elks last October.

NEW HOME AT BOVINA

Bovina (, ) will have a chance to claim the District A Division II title as New Home (, ) comes into town.

Both the Mustangs and Leopards have been perfect in district play, but Bovina has the slight advantage in that this matchup will be their last with a bye in week

Bovina's season started with a win over Boys Ranch in the season opener followed by a five-game losing rut. Last year's contest went to New Home, a win to the Leopards.

  1. Awesome tutorial! Can we please have in the next update a way to move the preview screen to the middle - or at least not flush to the right side? When editing in 16:9, you have to move the whole editor to see the right side of the video. Uncool.
