Amazing.  After over five hundred posts on airgun butchery, we've never torn down a Feinwerkbau 124.  Nick and I both own 124's, yet still nothing on one of the most iconic spring guns ever made.

Luckily for us, airgun purveyor, rock legend, and hall of fame co-chair, Frank B, happened to have a 124 that needed some attention--and he thought it was high time to set this blog to straight.  We also figured I needed the practice and a couple more blog posts.

Frank separated the barrel/breech block assembly from the gun for ease of shipping in a shorter box.  Many folks would be hard pressed to reassemble a spring gun if they had to re-seat the cocking lever and install the barrel pivot bolt while fighting the detent spring.   So maybe keep that in mind if you're packaging something up for sale.

You know I was stuck right here fwb 124 sport for sale I popped the entire sheet.

The stock is one used just for shipping--we were mainly concerned with protecting the trigger.  I'm contractually obligated to disclose that Frank had absolutely nothing to do with refinishing this poor piece of wood.

Removed the stock screws and set the lumber aside.

Reinstalled the barrel assembly to the compression tube.  This is where middle school football jamboree tear down really begins.

This is one of the few guns that I gotta use a spring compressor to disassemble.  The chunk of wood bearing against the end cap is relieved to clear the safety lever.

An 11mm wrench fits the lug.  A slight amount of pressure on the end cap takes tension off the lug.  It should unscrew pretty easily.

As the end cap is backed out, the safety falls out along with the trigger return spring.

The return spring is directly above the trigger blade.   It pulls right out.

Roughly 4.5" of factory spring preload.

Weird.  Hey, uh, where's the grease?

Like it's right out of the parts washer.  Where does he find this stuff?

The trigger is unitized into the end cap with the spring guide.  Also squeaky clean.

Removed the lock screw from the pivot bolt.  It works by expanding the end of the pivot bolt in the threaded hole.

The pivot bolt was unscrewed.  Note the expansion slot.  One on the opposite side of the bolt, too.

A single pivot washer on the right side of the breech block.  Note the counter bore machined into the breech for the washer.   Anyway, with the pivot bolt removed, the barrel assembly is pulled free--the end of the cocking lever also comes right out of the cocking shoe.

The piston still won't come out quite yet.

The rear of the cocking slot is enlarged to permit removal of the cocking shoe.

Remove fwb 124 sport for sale height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-usEeaay-xHU/Tn1Gs6sgF1I/AAAAAAAAIiw/kPCJkxHj-vM/s320/P9210074.JPG" width="320">

and the piston will come out.

Still no grease.  Maybe someone soaked the gun in a vat of kerosene before sending it out.

There's a tiny nick in the seal--no doubt it was cut on the cocking slot.  team canada hockey net height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rgqOlNRZkvM/Tn1G9kPmKAI/AAAAAAAAIjE/Cs7thYz5-iw/s320/P9210089.JPG" width="320">

No grease inside the piston body, either.  Why would someone tear the gun completely down, replace the seals and then reassemble without even using axle grease?

Not sure what's going on with that breech seal either.

I don't think this is any good.   Fortunately, Frank thought ahead and included several Maccariparts for reassembly.  I think he sent the "Pro-Mac kit".

Give me a couple more days and I'll finish this up in part 2.

New Version of the FWB 124

I bought one last year. Very nice stock, nice bluing, very nice trigger, overall quality feel. It only did about 8.5fpe. No matter what pellets I tried, low, low fpe. I figured I had a lemon, so I returned it for an exchange. The replacement produced……….9fpe.

I live at 5600feet above sea level but I was seeing much greater reduction in energy than I see in my other springers.

The shot cycle on both guns was absolutely abysmal. Least enjoyable shot cycle I've ever felt in a springer (Chinese cheapos, HW77k, RX2, HW50s/50/35/80, Diana 34, TX200, FWB300, LGU, Mendoza Diana 52/54, Sunflower smoking bowl, etc .) Seriously bad shot cycle. Id rather go shoot two boxes of ammo through my 30.06 than 40 shots through the two new Sports I tried. Harsh, loud, jumpy, bad, bad, bad.

So two big gripes: both specimens only produced about 60-65% of advertised energy, AND THE GOSH AWFUL SHOT CYCLE!!!

Of the guns I have tried and decided weren't for me, I was the most disappointed with the Sport. It remains the gun that I really wanted to love, but just couldn't.

The argument can be made that a tune could have helped some of that out…… the initial price point, coupled with the fact that the gun supposedly had some design flaws, made me rule out starting the sometimes long journey of tuning a springer. I understand the spring is very thick diameter wire and very large in general. Beautiful gun, but in my opinion, a swing and a miss by the FWB engineers.

Fwb 124 sport for sale - something is

Classic gun spotlight: Feinwerkbau Sport 124/127

There was a time when Weihrauch’s HW 80 and HW 35 reigned supreme – but, as Richard Saunders points out, they weren’t the only game in town

With a 46.5cm barrel and an overall length of more than a metre, the FWB Sport weighs less than 3kg unscoped

During the 1980s, the Teutonic titans from the Weihrauch stable were the guns that everyone wanted. They were big, heavy and powerful. We marvelled at how they would split tin cans and pieces of wood, and knock down rabbits, pigeons and squirrels.

Back then, your choices were simple: if you didn’t have a Weihrauch, you had a BSA – probably a Mercury, or an Airsporter – or a Webley Vulcan. But there was an alternative. It was another German rifle, but about as different to the HWs as a gun could get. The Feinwerkbau Sport was more delicate and refined. Where the Weihrauchs were airgun hammers, the FWB was more of a precision instrument.

The safety catch on the FWB is automatically set when the rifle is cocked

Launched in 1973, the FWB Sport 124/127 stayed in production until 1986, by which time approximately 61,000 rifles had been made. The .177 FWB 124 was designed to put out just over 10ft-lb, while the .22 FWB 127 was detuned slightly from 13ft-lb for the UK market. Today the 124 is more desirable from a collector’s point of view, especially the early models.

Easy to cock and smooth in the firing cycle, the FWB 124/127 was admired for its accuracy and build quality. The trigger came in for some criticism – then again, so did every trigger that wasn’t Weihrauch’s Rekord unit – but it was better than those offered by BSA and Webley. And the stock was a little delicate and prone to cracking across the pistol grip.

The trigger was deemed inferior to Weihrauch’s Reckord unit, but still delivered a crisp let-off

The Mk 1 was distinguished by a plastic trigger, which was uprated to aluminium for the Mk 2 – a deluxe model featured stylish chequering and a black pistol grip cap.

Today the Feinwerkbau Sport 124/127 is remembered fondly as an capable and slightly exclusive alternative to the rest that Germany, not to mention Great Britain, could offer at the time.

The lettering displays Feinwerkbau’s home town of Oberndorf in southwestern Germany

You know I was stuck right here until I popped the entire sheet.

This is where the tear down really begins.

Remove it....

and the piston will come out.

Still no grease.  Maybe someone soaked the gun in a vat of kerosene before sending it out.

There's a tiny nick in the seal--no doubt it was cut on the cocking slot.

Typical unsolicited testimonial on our Super Grade FWB Sport trigger blades.

Hi Jim,

The 124 SS trigger arrived today. It took much longer to get the old  grease out of the trigger block than to install it.  The difference is amazing.  I think its as good as anything I have.  I am in shock really. Having seen so many bad comments about the factory trigger, I thought the stock trigger was all there was. I believe I would rather have this simple design than a complicated Rekord that offers nothing more or different. I can see the factories not being able to hold trigger blade tolerances as close as you do, but I am starting to see how many of the negative comments on not being able to upgrade the FWB sport triggers were simply nonsense.

Your tune kits and trigger blades have totally transformed my FWB sporters beyond my expectations. Thanks for supporting us old timers. G.R.- Canada

Since installing your custom 127 kit, it's hanging right there in velocity with my .22 caliber R1. You have awakened this sleeping dog. My R1 is due next for the transformation. My order has been placed today. Thanks again. T.J. Missouri

You came highly recommended by not one but two ex-FWB importers. I'm sure glad I found you. Send me up another 124 Old School Kit. Why FWB didn't think of this I'll never know.  Absolutely Superb!!

Please bring back the finished custom stocks for the 124-127. I have a high grade like the picture in your Gallery #3. I know many others who would like to dress up their old guns but do not have the skill to complete a D.I.Y. one.

Gene R., WI.

My FWB 124 was headed for the trash bin. Thank you for making the cocking levers and slides. Without these parts the gun was useless. Now it's back to it's former glory.

Description

The Golden age of high power precision air rifles owes a large part of
its beginning to the Feinwerkbau 124 Sport. The 124 was the most sought
after magnum class sporting air rifle in the 70’s and 80’s and on
through the early 90’s. The 124 possessed the best balance of high
power, ease of cocking and match accuracy combined with FWB’s edge in
quality and old-world craftsmanship. The 124 Sport was sadly
discontinued to make room for the manufacture of FWB’s 10 meter guns.
FWB with the rich heritage of making sporting class air rifles have once
again entered the magnum class high power market with the all new FWB
Sport model. The model Sport is a masterpiece of simplicity and
precision. The Sport has increased capacity for higher power than the
original 124. The new rifles features include a resettable safety and
precision sight system with a four position rear sight to give even the
most tired of eyes a crisp picture for the best accuracy. Feinwerkbau
translated means ‘fine works house’. The sport model lives up to this
name with the art of fine gunsmiths present from the gleaming metalwork
and the Italian crafted, Bavarian style stock with sharp checkering
present on four generous panels. The Sport’s trigger is now match
quality and adjustable with a crisp precise release. The power of the
Sport has been increased to well over 900 fps with quality lead pellets.
900 fps is the sweet spot for a combination of small game getting
accuracy and penetration. The cocking cycle is smooth and low effort
for the power the rifle delivers. The recoil is below average as is the
vibration…a testament to the fine craftsmanship of the Sport. The
stock has been designed for the best in comfort and head position with a
rubber butt pad for a no slip grip on the shoulder or floor. The new
Feinwerkbau Sport is a heirloom gun that is at home in the field, at the
range, or in your collector’s cabinet.
