Early Years Programme

Encouraging your child to learn to swim is one of the most important opportunities you can give them!

Learning to swim is an essential skill that can mean the difference between life and death. Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death world-wide and these statistics could be improved if more children were taught to swim at an early age.

In line with the Scottish Government’s Physical Activity Strategy , the Aquatics Aberdeen programmes look to develop physical confidence and competence in water from the earliest age.

Classes start from birth and give babies and children the opportunity to experience the joys of movement, and the social, emotional and physical wellbeing that comes through play. Starting from a young age enhances learning, creates happy memories, and forms good habits and positive attitudes which can last throughout their life.

The programme follows the Scottish Swimming Framework which enables your child to work through exciting and progressive stages as follows:

Class Levels

Adult and Baby (0–12 Months)

Participants:

Parent is in the water with the child.

Aim:

To introduce the adult and baby to a swimming environment and develop the confidence and skills of the adult to ensure the safe and effective handling of the baby in the water.

Objectives:

  • The adult will have the range of skills and knowledge necessary to handle their baby confidently and safely in the water
  • The &#;quality time&#; aspect will be a key element of the adult and baby aquatic experience
  • Adult and baby will have experienced basic supports, body positions and a range of movements in the water
  • Adult and baby will have developed water confidence and enjoyment in the aquatic environment.

  • The child will have developed confident submersion and aquatic breathing
  • The child will have been involved in interaction with other adults and children

FAQs

Aquatics Aberdeen follows the Scottish Swimming Framework which enables your child to work through exciting and progressive stages designed by the national governing body for swimming. The programme has also been awarded SwiMark Plus which is Scottish Swimming&#;s highest quality aquatic development programme for learn to swim programmes and clubs.

Aquatics Aberdeen is the proud winners of the Scottish Water Learn to Swim Provider of the Year , awarded by Scottish Swimming and was a finalist in

When should you start your baby’s swimming classes?

Classes start from birth and there are many key benefits to starting this journey as early as possible including:

  • Babies and young children love getting in the water and having fun in a safe and supported environment, whilst developing their social skills.
  • Swimming keeps your child’s heart and lungs healthy, improves strength and flexibility, increases stamina and even improves balance and posture, whilst contributing to brain development and learning.
  • Listening, following instruction and self-regulating their behaviour are all skills that help prepare children for school.

What should you expect from an early years swimming lesson?

All children should be having fun. The lessons involve game-based activities to help them learn core swimming skills such as breathing, submerging and moving in the water. Swimming strokes will be introduced gradually once children have learned the basic core aquatic skills.

What are the core aquatic skills?

These are the building blocks for learning more complex practices and they are fundamental to your child becoming a confident and competent swimmer. For example:

  • Blowing bubbles in the bath/pool is the first stage for aquatic breathing
  • Floating helps a child establish good body position for strokes to be developed and is key to teaching children safety.

Do I need to go in the water?

Yes. Our Early Years programme is designed to introduce you and your child to the water in a fun way, making it exciting and enjoyable for you both. It will provide you as the parent with confidence and skills to help teach your child to swim.

Swimming costume/trunks, towel, shampoo, swimming nappy (if required) and an adult with their swimming kit too. Change for lockers will be required at most pools.

Make sure that your child arrives “pool ready”. This means coming with their costume or trunks underneath their comfy clothes or towel robe. Make sure you take all your child's personal belongings with you or use a locker which accepts 50p (this is refundable) please wipe the locker down before and after use. If your child is in our duckling classes, you will need to come “pool ready” too as you’ll need to be in the pool with your child. This will be a great opportunity to learn how to support and develop your child's skills in and outside of the class

We’ll have a one way system around the pool areas so make sure that you follow our directional signage. Each stage will be clearly signposted so your child will know where to stand before their lessons. Please make sure that they know to use the markers to stay socially distanced in their lesson.

If your child is 8+ you'll need to wait outside of the facilities, such as outside or in your car, but please don’t leave the facilities. For those with younger swimmers, you may need to wait in the designated area which is the main pool viewing area, please make sure you sit on the chair on the 'x' and you don't move the chair, viewing is not allowed in the small pool viewing area as this is part of our one way system.

At the end of your lesson you’ll need to collect your child from the “pick up point”. So that we can make room for the next swimmers please make sure that you collect your child promptly ensuring that you collect all of your belongings.

Baby swimming

Babies have been in fluid in the womb for nine months so are comfortable in the water from the minute they are born as long as they feel safe.

Contrary to popular belief, your baby does not need any immunisations before they go swimming. You can take your baby swimming at any time before and after their vaccinations. Babies under the age of four months can become chilled very easily, so shorter trips are advisable when introducing your baby to the pool. If you are worried or have any questions check with your health visitor before you take a dip.

When introducing your baby to the water help to reassure them by smiling, talking and making lots of eye contact. From an early age babies will instinctively move their arms and legs when immersed in water and you can use this to make them familiar with feeling supported and feel the water on their face.

What you should bring:

Top of the list will be a swimming nappy &#; accidents can and do happen! You&#;ll also need to pack:

  • A warm bottle for after the swim if you are bottle feeding or a snack if your baby has started solids. Swimming is hungry work!
  • A towel, preferably one with a hood or a towelling dressing gown to get warm and dry after your swim.
  • A few of your baby&#;s bath toys to encourage a familiar, relaxed and fun environment.
    Changing mat and nappy bag.
  • Don&#;t forget to pack your own swimming bag too!

Additional Support

If you would like some support with introducing your baby to the water we have some fantastic Adult & Child Lessons as part of our Learn 2 Swim Tots Programme. Follow the link for more information on what&#;s involved or for more details you can either call your local Brio Leisure Centre directly or email swim@casinoextra.fr the Brio Swim Team.
