West Van Hockey Academy finds a new home for '22 season

The West Van Hockey Academy, an elite high school-based hockey program, is set to hit the ice again starting this fall following a one-year hiatus.

On Wednesday (March 3) the Canadian Sport School Hockey League announced that the West Van academy was approved to rejoin the league for the '22 season.

The academy appears to be back on track after a split with the West Vancouver school district last winter put the program on ice for the '21 season. The academy was formerly associated with Sentinel Secondary in West Van, but the school district ended that relationship in early citing “concerns about academic success, and other challenges such as student programming and scheduling as well as the increased enrolment at Sentinel.”

A tentative agreement was then formed with the North Vancouver School District to house the program at Deep Cove’s Seycove Secondary starting last fall, but that move faced opposition from members of the tight-knit Seycove community and was ultimately scuttled when COVID hit and the school district said they could not perform proper public consultation in time to make a final decision.

The academy now is linked to a brand new education partner, North Shore Academy, a North Vancouver-based private school that is set to begin instruction this fall. The North Shore Academy’s website says it will offer a combination of e-learning and traditional teaching with customizable schedules designed for “high performance athletes, aspiring artists, accelerated academics, early work co-ops and independent schedules.”

Today’s announcement states that the hockey academy – still listed as the West Van Hockey Academy – will field four teams starting this fall: U15, U15 Prep, U16 Prep and U18 Prep divisions.

“We are very pleased to be returning to the CSSHL, a great league committed to education-based hockey,” stated West Van Hockey Academy founder and director Nathan Fischer in the release. “The focus of the West Van Academy is to provide quality hockey, academic, leadership, and personal development for our student athletes. We are excited to enhance our program with the dedicated and progressive education model that North Shore Academy offers.”

The West Van Academy was founded in , offering high-level hockey players, from the North Shore and far beyond, a place to play and train in an academic setting. The most famous alumni of the program is North Vancouver’s Connor Bedard, the first player in WHL history to earn exceptional status as an underage player. Bedard is set to make his WHL debut with the Regina Pats later this month.

Elite Summer Hockey Camp

Camp is set to start on June 8th!

We are currently in the process of identifying committed hockey players to train during the summer of  The North Shore Hockey Development Academy (NSHDA) Elite Summer Hockey Camp will run from June 8th to July 30th.  The camp will take place at Heartland Ice Arena. The camp will run each week Monday through Thursday (4 days).

The purpose of NSHDA's Elite Summer Camp is to provide a training ground for elite hockey players to master their craft over the summer.  The coaches on the Ice will be Ryan Taylor, Tony Gill, and Brett Lebda.  NSHDA is derived from the recognition that to build high level athletes it takes quality repetitions and advanced techniques. Hockey skills will be taught in a repetitive manner making the core fundamentals second nature so players can execute in competition. This summer camp is for players who inspire to play at an elite level and are committed to the game of hockey.

This training routine will focus on core aspects of the game for nine weeks. Focus will be on skating/edges, passing, stick handling, shooting, defensive plays, offensive plays, and small area battles. Coaching emphasis will be on technique, repetition, constant feedback, and mastering of the skill. Each player will receive a NSHDA jersey.

The Bantam, Peewee, and Squirt Levels will have a daily off-ice dry land program.  Midgets will also have the opportunity to do off-ice training this year as well.  The enhanced off-ice program will be led by High Performance Training in their state of the art facility at Heartland Ice Arena.  High Performance Training is the new partner of NSHDA.  We believe the HPT program will help elevate players to reach a higher level. The off-ice program will build strength, speed, and agility for on ice play.

Goalies will have specific instruction three days per week by GDI team who focus on breaking down the goaltending position into a logical sequence of progressions with customized, personal evaluations for each goalie.

Training throughout the whole summer will allow players to make significant gains on and off the ice.  NSHDA camp runs during off-peak hours leaving time for other sports at night and on the weekends.  The following are the weeks and times of the camp:

Reopening Guidelines:

With Illinois looking to enter Phase 3 of reopening we are gearing up to start the NSHDA Summer Hockey Camp on June 8th.

We will be following the guidelines set forth by the State of Illinois for Phase 3.

  • Please register ASAP as we will be limiting the number of players per a group per a week in order to follow the state guidelines.  All campers will need to be registered before camps begin in order for us to prepare proper staffing and grouping of players for each session.
  • The Camp times will run at the times that we have set.
  • Within each session the ice will be split into groups of a maximum of 9 players and 1 coach.  For each level we will do our best to group the players with similar abilities.
  • The off-ice sessions will also be split into groups of a maximum of 9 players and 1 coach.
  • Social distancing will be employed in the drills we do on the ice and off the ice.
  • We will communicate how we want the players to enter and exit the rink prior to the first day of camp.
  • We will set up spaces within the rink for players to dress while still being able to properly social distance.
  • Parents will not be allowed in the rink to spectate in order to limit the number of people in the building.  We understand younger players might need their parent to tie their skates.  In this case parents must wear a mask when they come into the building but we encourage parents to have their players dress at home if this is the case.
  • Heartland Ice Arena will continue to have the facility deep cleaned and sanitized 7 nights a week using medical grade cleaning supplies.
  • Heartland Ice Arena will continue to deep clean and sanitize common areas, high touch areas, and hard surfaces to provide a safe and clean facility.

We look forward to starting camp this summer and providing an outlet for kids to enjoy the sport they love.
