ALTAIR — The signs of summer began to show itself Saturday at Rice Veterans’ Memorial Stadium with eight teams vying for a ticket to College Station and the 2021 Texas 7-on-7 Tournament.

There was one team that stood above the rest in the Rice Raiders state qualifying tournament for Division III: East Bernard.

The Slot-T focused Brahmas showed off their defensive skills and passing ability to dominate by over 100 points over four games.

“This represents all the hard work we’ve been putting in,” East Bernard quarterback Dallas Novicke said. “It felt good to get a lot of wins.”

No team scored more than one touchdown against the Brahmas, before defeating rival Wallis Brazos 50-12 in the state-qualifying game.

In pool play, East Bernard sprinted past Ganado (41-0), Schulenberg (47-6) and Tidehaven (33-6).

Tidehaven was the other team to qualify out of the Rice Raiders SQT, beating Corrigan-Camden 25-18.

The 2021 state tournament will take place Thursday, June 24 and Friday, June 25 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station for Division III.

The Brahmas return to the state tournament after qualifying in 2019 and the 2020 canceled due to COVID-19.

“Now we have to go to college station and prove that we are the best,” Mason Crist said.

The work put in during 7-on-7 will also help the Brahmas in the fall when the team puts on the pads.

“We are just working on our passing,” said Blake Jedlicla. “We don’t necessarily try to get away from the Slot-T, but we want to have that passing threat that the defense has to look for. We’re not just a Slot-T running team.”

Cougars on the prowl

While the ending was not what Brazos wanted, the Cougars started the Rice Raiders SQT strong.

Brazos defeated Danbury 13-0 and the host team Rice Consolidated 24-6.

“We learned a lot today,” Brazos quarterback Bryson Bennett said. “We worked on getting the ball down field and using our short routes.”

But the Cougars ran out of gas in the second half against Corrigan-Camden, squandering a first-half lead with a 16-12 loss.

The loss pushed Corrigan-Camden to the top seed out of Pool A and sent Brazos to the state qualifying round against East Bernard, the Pool B winners.

The Cougars held the line, holding East Bernard to three touchdowns in a 21-6 loss.

No other team came close to holding East Bernard under 30 points.

One of two for me; but I think this edged the 1994 Upset of PI over #1 ranked Cuero Gobblers.:)

Just gotta love those Tarps. My father-in-law grew up there and played every sport. His sisters still live there. He is in Orange now. A displaced Tarp.

Bellville vs Marlin 3 over-times, was also a good game played in Bryan. Bellville won.

The PI-Cuero 1994 game was a classic as well. But I'd have to give an edge to the PI-Rice game because of the 4 Overtimes

This is a 3ADL flashback for me, footballgal. PI beat us the week before; I had 2 boys on the team that year. The loss against PI was the final game of my oldest son's high school career. Anyway - we had our entire family, and a few other from the team gathered around what was at the time the only computer in our house. We were "refreshing" every few seconds watching the updates on 3ADL as the game go back & forth. I imagine it was great to see in person!

With all that said.... excluding the final score, the LH/Jasper semi-finals game in '04 was the best game I ever watched.

Gobbler Grad and his wife were at the PI/RC came and calling with updates. Everytime he'd call, we couldn't believe the other team had answered to the other teams scores. It must have been a something to witness in person.

lol :D it wasn't two years ago it was last year. I have a problem making copies, that's why I never sent it to you and a Rice Player named Jenkins. They tell me that disk is bad and that's why I can't get any copies from it  I really don't understand why, because I can view it just fine. If your willing to try making copies for me, I will send it to you, as long as you promise me (in front of all these witnesses, that you will send it back to me. ;)) Or, I can send it and you can sent back. Let me know, you can PM me.

I just hate to loose it, because when they got it done for me, they included the following;
1 -PI Tarpons 2002 season highlights (Bandera game)
2- PI vs Brahams 2004
3- PI vs Ingleside 2004
4 - PI vs Liberty Hill 2003
5- PI vs Rice Consolidated
