The Boots

We're often asked what is the difference between the various choices in Vibram soles. Here is a quick overview of the main three soles we use on Viberg work boots.

Vibram Lug Sole

The V lug sole (and the V variant) has a strong tread and a block heel for traction and stability. The block heel makes this a good choice for climbing ladders and standing for long periods of time. The V sole is used on nailed styles, and is the standard choice for the X Contractor, 55VX Foreman Lug and 75X Lineman CSA boots. The lug sole is available in Oil-resistant or Fire & Ice versions.

Vibram Lug Sole

Vibram Sierra Sole

The V Sierra sole has an angled tread pattern and a rounded heel for stability on changing surfaces. This makes the Sierra sole a good choice for walking and hiking, or working on uneven terrain. The V is used for stitchdown styles, and is the standard choice for the 45X Sierra, SX Rigger, 36X Bobcat, 40X Work Lite and 90SX Wellington CSA boots. The Sierra sole is also available in both Oil-resistant or Fire & Ice versions.

Vibram Sierra Sole

Vibram Tygum Sole

The V Tygum sole has a smooth tread that is best suited for fashion styles. The Tygum sole is most often seen on the pull-on styles in our biker boot and western boot lines. There are two rarer CSA styles that offer a Tygum sole, they are the 51X Millwright, the 55X Foreman.

To demonstrate the contrast between the construction styles of stitchdown versus nailed, these exploded view images of each style will show where the differences lie. Both styles can be resoled or repaired more than once as needed.

What Are Vibram Soles?

One of the features that many work boots share are Vibram soles, which are often either standard or are an optional upgrade for a surcharge. Are they worth it? What ARE Vibram soles, anyhow?

Vibram is a brand of outsole manufacturer, and they produce soles for work boots and outdoor boots. They are sold all over the world and while maybe they aren't the absolute best of the best of the best in all instances, they are the standard by which all others are judged.

Vibram makes a wide range of boot soles, so there's a Vibram sole for almost any application ranging from kitchen to other indoor work, light outdoor labor such as construction, logging, all the way to hunting and other outdoor pursuits.

So, let's find out a little more about Vibram soles.

Vibram Soles Devised For Mountaineering Long Before Work Boots

Vibram soles are named for the founder of the company that bears their name, Vitale Bramani. Bramani was an alpine mountain climber. In the s, outdoor footwear was quite different than today. Heavy hobnail boots would be worn in the first part of a mountain ascent, changing to felt-soled boots for the last part of the climb.

Felt-soled boots, which are still sold today for river crossings and flyfishing, offer great traction unless they freeze, which commonly happened in Bramani's era. During one expedition attempting to summit Mt. Rascia in the Italian Alps, six of Bramani's companions died from exposure, as they were unable to descend the mountain quickly enough.

He surmised the slow climbs were the fault of the footwear, but also that vulcanized rubber - patented by Charles Goodyear, of all people - would be a good material for the task as it is abrasion and water-resistant.

Using a variant of Goodyear's rubber and with investments from tire magnate Leopoldo Pirelli, he launched the Vibram ("vee-brahm") sole company, starting with the lug design that the company is known for with the yellow Vibram logo in the middle. Then called the Carrarmato ("tank tread") it quickly became known for being hard-wearing and with excellent traction.

In , an Italian climbing team wearing Vibram soles made the first successful summit of K2, one of the most technically challenging peaks in the Himalayas and also one of the deadliest - 20 percent of all climbers have perished in the attempt.

Today, Vibram soles are offered on rugged footwear all over the world, and many of those footwear designs not having actual Vibram-brand lug soles are still wearing a Vibram design.

Vibram Sole Work Boots

So, what about Vibram sole work boots?

Vibram soles, as you have gathered, are specialized boot soles. Though the original - the Carrarmato - is no longer the only option, it's actually still one of the better outdoor and otherwise general purpose heavy-duty boot sole. Vitale Bramani was as keen on the mechanical design as he was on the material design, using state-of-the-art rubber compounds of the day to get the utmost in traction, durability, and waterproofing.

Today, leather work boots can be had with Vibram soles to fit almost any application. All-purpose, slip-resistant, electrical hazard-resistant, whatever it may be. Vibram creates bootsoles for practical purposes and has gone so much further beyond those for outdoor pursuits.

That's why they're the standard for quality work boots. Boot soles are a tool, and it just so happens that Vibram makes some of the best for the various tasks that your work boots are called upon to do.

Therefore, to get the most out of Vibram soles, picking the appropriate model is a good idea.

Choosing The Right Sole For Custom Work Boots

Vibram soles often adorn custom work boots, but usually, a custom boot maker will ask which model you want. There's a good reason behind it, as Vibram makes a diverse lineup of boot soles.

A lot of people, however, will be well-served with the Vibram The Vibram Montagna ("mountain") model is the modern day Carrarmato. Just like when first released, it's very well suited to outdoor use with great traction. It's also great for the job site, as it's hardy and abrasion-resistant so it's good for concrete and other hard surfaces. The heat-resistant compound also makes it a good choice for wildland firefighters.

Vibram soles are only a partial lug, with a smooth outer edge but lug interior. These soles are for the utmost in slip resistance but still offer good enough traction for light outdoor use. These are well-suited for industrial use.

Another good choice for industrial footwear is the Vibram , a chevron pattern that offers good slip resistance.

And many more are available besides!

Work boots are, after all, tools that help you do your job. Vibram soles help make that tool work better.

Sole & Heel Characteristics:

Wesco boot styles with standard logger heels have a heel about " / 28mm higher than the soles. For instance, boots made with the Vibram # heavy lug sole are about 2" / 51mm high at the back of the heel and ⅞" / " / 22mm in the sole at the forefoot. Those measurements are for a standard Jobmaster or Boss Engineer boot and include the thickness of the # Vibram outsole and the leather and rubber midsoles.

Highliner lineman boots have an extra half-slip, a layer of leather which adds extra arch support and stiffness. That makes the heel slightly higher.

Boots made with extra ¼" / mm midsoles are ¼" thicker from sole to heel. So there is the same difference in thickness at the sole and heel as standard boots.

Wesco can also put an extra half slip into the instep area. This is a wedge shaped piece of leather sole which runs from the heel under the instep. It provides extra arch support, a bit of extra heel height and stiffens the sole a bit.

On boots with logger heels it's possible to have the heels made higher or lower by adding or omitting leather heel lifts which are stacked to make the heels. These are wedge shaped pieces of stiff sole leather which are each about ¼" / mm thick at the back.

The standard logger heel used on the Wesco Boss, Jobmaster and Highliner boots is made with 2 of these leather lifts. The Wesco Harness and Western Boss boots use 3 of these leather lifts, so they are ¼" taller at 2¼" heel height.

Going "two lifts lower" reduces the height of the heel by ½" / 13mm which makes the heel 1½" / 38mm high, about the same height as a standard "low" heel boot.

But life is complicated. Once the boots are made with a heel ½" / 13mm lower, the wooden last used to provide shape to the boots as they are built, needs to be modified to account for the smaller angle in the sole and the resulting backwards tilt to the boot shaft so a special last designed for lower heels must be used. Wesco has a smaller range of sizes in these lasts. Details and available sizes are shown on our Wesco Boot Features page here.

Bootmakers occasionally use the traditional term "iron" to describe the thickness of soles. We have information about that on our Boot FAQ page here. Essentially an "iron" is 1/48 of an inch thick. So a 6 iron leather sole is ⅛ inch thick.

Vibram's "Raptor" low heel unisoles:

Boots made with the low heel Vibram "Raptor" cushioned wedge unisoles do not have have any heel lifts. These soles are attached directly to the boot's midsole system. Wesco boot styles made with the Vibram Raptor low heel unisoles have a heel about " / 20mm higher than the soles. So, boots made with the Vibram Raptor unisole are about " / 40mm high at the back of the heel and " / 20mm in the sole at the forefoot. The leather midsole component then adds another " / 8mm.

The Boots

We're often asked what is the difference between the various choices in Vibram soles. Here is a quick overview of the main three soles we use on Viberg work boots.

Vibram Lug Sole

The V lug sole (and the V variant) has a strong tread and a block heel for traction and stability, vibram 100 lug.

The V is used for stitchdown styles, vibram 100 lug is the standard choice for the 45X Sierra, SX Rigger, 36X Bobcat, 40X Work Lite and 90SX Wellington CSA boots. The Sierra sole is also available in both Oil-resistant or Fire & Ice versions.

Vibram Sierra Sole

Vibram Tygum Sole

The V Tygum sole vibram 100 lug a smooth tread that is best suited for fashion styles. The Tygum sole is most often seen on the pull-on styles in our biker boot and western boot lines. There are two rarer CSA styles that offer a Tygum sole, they are the 51X Millwright, the 55X Foreman.
