I set out on a recent bostonville sports bar night to test out BurgerWorks, a new meat joint in the North Beverly Plaza.

But when I called ahead to find out how late the place would be open, I got that dreaded we're-no-longer-in-business fast busy signal. I dialed again just to make sure I had the right number. Fast busy again. Next, I called the Chamber of Commerce.

"I heard they closed," said the woman on the other end of the line.

Closed after only a few months in business? In this economy, nothing surprises me.

With burgers still on my brain, I decided to venture back to the Bostonville Grille, the mammoth sports bar, restaurant, and entertainment complex on Route 1 north in Lynnfield.

I actually visited Bostonville for a review when it opened in 2007. To say I disliked it would be an understatement.

Sure, bostonville sports bar, the game area was great (who doesn't like skee-ball?) - it was certainly a haven for children's birthday parties - but the food was bad. It was all too dry or drowned in sauce. The service was mediocre. At the time, my dining companion and I vowed never to return.

But late last year I noticed a flashing sign in the complex's parking lot that advertised a new menu. It had me wondering whether it was worth giving Bostonville a second chance at a first impression. Perhaps the restaurant had righted its wrongs?

The same dining companion and I decided to test out this new menu.

I'm happy to report that this time, the restaurant got it right.

We started with the nacho-zilla appetizer ($10) and the Cajun popcorn shrimp ($9). Two years ago, the nachos were dry and the salsa looked as though it had been poured straight out of a supermarket jar. There were no frills. No sour cream. Fast forward to 2009 and the nacho plate was huge, the sour cream was ample, and the chips were coated with cheese. We also liked the basket of tiny, spiced shrimp. It's a good snack for the Red Sox-hat-wearing clientele that visits Bostonville to watch games and play trivia.

For entrees, we chose the same haddock sandwich ($9) we had two years ago, a cheeseburger ($8), bostonville sports bar, and one of the new menu items, the Northender pizza ($13).

The hamburger was solid and served with thick fries.

The fish was pretty good. It was a little soggy - probably not the safest order - but serviceable.

The pizza was awesome, especially for a sports bar. The Northender, which is one of many pizzas on the new menu, is billed as a "thin crust" pie, but it's actually quite thick. The crust was doughy and fresh. We were ripping it off and munching on it throughout the meal. Worth mentioning is that the pizza is big enough to serve three, so don't be put off by the price (some of the pies are close to $20).

We ordered eggplant, garlic, and fresh basil on top of our Northender. Those are pretty fancy toppings for a place decorated with Ultimate Fighting Championship posters.

For dessert we had a slice of chocolate cake ($7.45), something that was made off the premises (we were told it comes from a bakery in Melrose). The first time I had chocolate cake at Bostonville, I wrote that it "tasted like a Hostess Ho Ho." This was quite an improvement - layers of moist cake with icing as thick as cream cheese.

Really, bostonville sports bar, the whole night was a big step up from our first experience. The service was better. The nachos and cake were better. The food made the big leather couches at Bostonville appear to be more comfortable and the video games more amusing.

This time around, I can recommend more than the skee-ball.

Last Wednesday night, numerous individuals could be spotted parking at other businesses on Route 1 and making their way on foot to a packed Bostonville Grille to watch the Bruins wrap up their Stanley Cup playoff campaign.

Less than a week later, the scene was far different as the door stood wide open near lunchtime as workers moved around the place organizing dozens of liquor bottles, video games, and some fairly impressive looking sports memorabilia.

Among those working in the bostonville sports bar restaurant, one man was under the impression that the business is going to move to a new location in North Andover.

Another woman who identified herself as a manager did not confirm whether this was the case, indicating only that there has been no formal announcement on whether the Grille will re-open elsewhere.

At Lynnfield Town Hall, the Assessor's Department indicated that the land Bostonville currently occupies has been purchased by the adjoining Kelly Nissan.

Bostonville sports bar - opinion

Bostonville Sports Grille, Rt 1 south, Lynnfield

Hello to all

My oldest just turned 13 and wanted to take some of his friends out to a Sports Bar type place with video games, big screen TV's etc. We had visited this establishment years ago when it was the Big Dog and found it sorely lacking;the food was abysmal (even the kids couldn't eat it), soggy fries that were probably procured from a local Market Basket freezer case, pizza that a starving dog would turn down.

I am happy to say that we had a very different experience this time. It would appear that the same ownership (Big Dog, North Reading among others) remains in place but the place seems to be much more well run on this go around. One half of the place is devoted to video/sports theme games where they hold birthday parties ala Chuckie Cheese and the other half is a restaurant/bar area with many flat screen TV's showing every sport imaginable. When I could finally get 6 sports crazed boys out of the arcade, we were seated at a comfortable table and attended by 3 of the most patient servers the world will ever see. The boys spotted a huge leather sectional couch in front of a projection TV showing baseball and they rapidly claimed it for their own. I asked the servers if they could eat there and they said "sure" with a smile; no rolling of eyes, no sneers, just plain friendly. We were there on an off hour and the place was not busy but these folks could just as easily been nasty dealing with a bunch of very active (and pretty loud) young guys. The fare is pretty much pub grub but good. Giant hot dogs (I recommend the Kraut dog), burgers that were very well prepared, hand cut fries and pizza; I had heard that they hired someone away from Polcari's to make pizza and that could be true. The pizza was very Reginaish but more NY style with a slightly thicker crust which made it easier to hold onto. Very good quality cheese and what seemed to be a homemade sauce. Good stuff.. There are other offering as well. The menu is on their website http://www.bostonvillegrille.com/
The bar area is very well laid out and rather expansive, probably to accomodate a lot of standing room patrons when the Sox are playing.
The only thing that I would change is the brand of house Chardonnay that they serve (I didn't ask as I was rather busy corraling a bunch of kids). It was pretty rotgut but I drank it anyway.

The place is really a guys dream with comfortable chairs and couches, sports all over the place and decent food. I hope that they remain consistent and would urge other North Shore foodies to take note of the place and give it a try.

I set out on a recent weekday night to test out BurgerWorks, a new meat joint in the North Beverly Plaza.

Sure, the game area was great (who doesn't like skee-ball?) - it was certainly a haven for children's birthday parties - but the food was bad.

For entrees, we chose the same haddock sandwich ($9) we had two years ago, a cheeseburger ($8), and one of the new menu items, the Northender pizza ($13).

Really, the whole night was a big step up from our first experience. The service was better. The nachos and cake were better. The food made the big leather couches at Bostonville appear to be more comfortable and the video games more amusing.

This time around, I can recommend more than the skee-ball.
