Sports Illustrated’s preseason Top 25 snubbed USC football heading into 2016. Plus our daily Trojans news link round up.

Can’t get enough USC football and basketball news? We’ve got your morning dose of all the best content from around the web concerning the men of Troy.

1st & 10:

First Word… Sports Illustrated, you’ve got some explaining to do.

The publication put out their preseason Top 25 on Tuesday, but there was a noticeable snub pole dancing mistakes USC.

The Trojans were nowhere to be found among SI’s top teams heading into the 2016 season, though five Pac-12 teams made the cut.

Washington was ranked cbs sports lapel pins 2018 at No. 7, followed by Stanford at No. 11, Washington State at No. 18, Oregon bidwells shooting No. 21 and UCLA at No. 24.

Does USC deserve a preseason ranking? The coaches poll had the Trojans at No. 17, which falls in line with pitcher perfect baseball academy most publications have judged Clay Helton’s squad this offseason.

READ MORE: USC Ranked No. 17 in Preseason Coaches Poll

A possible explanation for the SI snub? While the SI staff didn’t explicitly state their ranking philosophy, maybe it’s the schedule problem.

It’s widely agreed that USC faces the toughest schedule in the nation this season. Oddsmakers have routinely set the Trojans’ win total over/under at between seven and nine wins. If pollsters were looking to compose a preseason poll which predicted the final outcome of the season, then it’s not insane to have USC on the outside looking in, with so many potential losses on the slate.

At the same time, there’s good reason to be skeptical of the snub.

More from Reign of Troy

As many valid questions as there are surrounding USC at the moment, the Trojans will still field a team with as much talent on hand as anyone. A scan of “Top Players in College Football” lists reveals that no less than three USC stars appear among any given Top 25 for 2016.

JuJu Smith-Schuster is considered the nation’s top receiver, or close to it, college football nov 28 2015. Adoree’ Jackson has garnered his fair share of accolades this offseason, while Zach Banner is considered one of the best offensive linemen in the country.

The remainder of USC’s squad is largely built on potential, so there’s no problem with being a little bit skeptical about how high the Trojans’ ceiling is.

Then again, SI is very much banking on potential when they rank Washington ahead of Stanford and Washington State ahead of Oregon.

The good news is that USC has proven very adept at winning when they’ve been ranked behind the opposition.

As pointed out by the Spirit of Troy, a Redditor dug out a list of the top win percentages by lower ranked teams. USC was No. 1 with a 46 percent win rate.

And Ten USC Football and Basketball News Links…

  1. “Freshman Vavae Malepeai Out 6-8 Weeks” (Reign of Troy) Bad news on the injury front for Vavae Malepeai, the freshman tailback from Hawaii. He’ll miss six to eight weeks with a broken scapula, an injury he suffered on Monday.
  2. “USC Fall Camp: 5 Players Who Impressed From Week 1” (Reign of Troy) It’s particularly bad luck for the Trojans, since Malepeai was among our stars from Week 1. Joining him were Steven Mitchell, Tyler Petite, Stevie Tu’ikolovatu and Ykili Ross.
  3. “USC linebacker Don Hill seeking redemption” (USCFootball.com) Don Hill has begun his second trudge up the mountain of redemption. It worked the first time as he earned USC’s Defensive Service Team Player of the Year Award. Wheatland softball working to make it up the climb again.
  4. “2016 Pac-12 South Division Preview: USC” (Pick Six Previews) SI may not like the Trojans but Pick Six Previews do. Brett Ciancia has USC as the top team in the Pac-12 South with the nation’s top offensive line.
  5. “Let’s Get Adoree Jackson on The Bachelorette” (CFB Huddle) Adoree’ Jackson says he could win the Bachelorette. He also had thoughts about the show’s outcome this season.
  6. “College Football’s Top 40 Offensive Lines for 2016” (Athlon Sports) USC checks in at No. 5 in Steven Lassan’s ranking of the top offensive lines this year, behind only Clemson, Alabama, LSU and Michigan.
  7. “College Football’s Top 40 Wide Receiver Groups for 2016” (Athlon Sports) The Trojans are No. 7 when it comes to receiver groups. Clemson, Alabama, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Michigan and Oregon outrank USC.

Projections for Every College Football Bowl Game

The bowl projections takes shape with the regular season over. USC and Cal rescheduled their game with the hope of securing a bowl but alas, they'll remain shut out of the postseason, as both have four wins and we'll have no need for 5–7 teams because we actually have too many six-win teams. So despite "too many bowl games" angst, someone's going to be on the couch despite being eligible.

The playoff picture has six teams seemingly within reasonable striking distance heading into championship weekend, so the top of the projections could still see some wild changes that upset the New Year's Six picture.

All times are Eastern.

Clemson Guts It Out

The top-ranked Clemson Tigers got a serious challenge from their in-state rivals the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday. In the end, Deshaun Watson took his game to another level with 393 total yards and four touchdowns.

The sophomore quarterback didn't get much Heisman Trophy buzz through the season, but he has been up to the task of leading the nation's best team. Check out this outstanding touchdown run from Saturday's game:

His next test will come in the ACC Championship Game against the North Carolina Tar Heels.

North Carolina Keeps Hope Alive

RALEIGH, NC - NOVEMBER 28: Josh Jones #2 and Hakim Jones #1 of the North Carolina State Wolfpack tackle Elijah Hood #34 of the North Carolina Tar Heels during their game at Carter-Finley Stadium on November 28, 2015 in Raleigh, North Carolina. (Photo by
Grant Halverson/Getty Images

The Tar Heels' CFP hopes aren't encouraging, but they could make a case for one of the spots if they knock off the Tigers in the ACC title game. With a convincing college football nov 28 2015 win over the North Carolina State Wolfpack, the Heels college football nov 28 2015 to 11-1, as sophomore running back Elijah Hood amassed 220 rushing yards and two scores.

The Heels haven't lost since their 17-13 Week 1 defeat at home to the Gamecocks, but they must beat Clemson to have even a remote chance of making the CFP.

If they somehow upset Clemson, that bad Week 1 loss could still come back to bite them.

Alabama Staves off Auburn

AUBURN, AL - NOVEMBER 28: Derrick Henry #2 of the Alabama Crimson Tide runs off the field after their 29-13 win over the Auburn Tigers at Jordan Hare Stadium on November 28, 2015 in Auburn, Alabama. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Early on, it looked as if the Auburn Tigers might be working on another Iron Bowl upset like the one they pulled off in 2013. The Alabama Crimson Tide led Auburn just 12-6 at the half but pulled away for a 29-13 win.

Derrick Henry ran the ball an ungodly 46 times for 271 yards and a score. It was a grind-it-out game, and no team in the country plays that style better than Bama does.

It will face the Florida Gators in the SEC college football nov 28 2015 game. With a win, Bama will likely lock down the No. 2 spot in the CFP—assuming Clemson wins. If the Tigers lose, Bama would probably be No. 1 and the odds-on favorite to win the national championship.

Ohio State Rebounds

ANN ARBOR, MI - NOVEMBER 28: Ezekiel Elliott #15 of the Ohio State Buckeyes leaves the field after a 42-13 win over the Michigan Wolverines at Michigan Stadium on November 28, 2015 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)
Gregory Shamus/Getty Images

The Ohio State Buckeyes' dreams of getting to the CFP were probably dashed when they lost at home to the Michigan State Spartans last week. On Saturday, the Buckeyes did their part to stay CFP-eligible by trouncing the Michigan Wolverines 42-13.

Ezekiel Elliott ran the ball 30 times for 214 yards and two touchdowns. He talked about his effort on Twitter after the game:

The Buckeyes will need plenty of help if they hope to reach the CFP. Perhaps the easiest route to the playoff might be behind losses by Clemson and Alabama in their respective title games. Even the most optimistic Ohio State fan would tell you that is difficult to fathom.

Three things to know

1) The top-10 and top-15 faceoffs. Two games pit top-10 teams in the College Football Playoff rankings against each other this Saturday: No. 8 Ohio State travels to No. 10 Michigan at 12 p.m., and No. 6 Notre Dame visits No. 9 Stanford at 7:30 p.m. in Palo Alto.

But those aren't the only big matchups. In-state rivalries between No. 12 Florida and No. 13 Florida State and No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 11 Oklahoma State might also elevate or drop Playoff contenders.

2) Can North Carolina keep soaring? The Tar Heels might be the standard-bearers for chaos in the Playoff rankings. At No. 14, they're not so far off that they couldn't vault into a top four with an impressive win over No. 1 Clemson (which meets the woeful South Carolina team that handed the Heels their only loss earlville golf course Saturday) in the ACC Championship Game. They need to beat N.C. State on Saturday to keep those faint hopes alive.

3) The Iron Bowl isn't as big as college football nov 28 2015 The No. 2 Alabama-Auburn Iron Bowl that many thought could decide the SEC West only technically does that. If the 10-1 Crimson Tide fall to the 6-5 Tigers, Ole Miss might yet go to the SEC Championship Game, but if Alabama wins as expected, the Tide rolls back to Atlanta. All Auburn can do is avoid a .500 season, and the potential of a losing mark depending on its bowl game.
