HP opens football season by routing Camden

The Holland Patent football team opened its season with an offensive blitz, scoring the first 42 points of the game in a 42-13 win at Camden Saturday afternoon.

The game’s first drive, by Holland Patent, came to an end when Camden defensive back Eric Mitchell won a wrestling match for possession on a long pass. But the Blue Devils coughed up the ball on the first play of its drive on a bad exchange on a run play. Holland Patent’s Scott Rachon came away with the ball at the Camden 36.

The Golden Knights took advantage and got the game’s first score, holland patent football 2018. After five run plays moved the ball to Camden’s 12, HP’s Mike Benedetto dropped back and threw to the back of the end zone, holland patent football 2018, where receiver Dylan Ernst was running to his right then pivoted and turned back to his left at the last second to make the catch for the score with 6:36 left in the first quarter. Ethan Cassidy’s extra point kick made it 7-0.

Benedetto, holland patent football 2018, who was never sacked in the game, gave plenty of credit to the offense around him when he talked after the win. He said his transition to quarterback that began during the 2019 season was helped along by “a lot of weapons,” a line that gives him time to throw holland patent football 2018 a coaching staff that jones rover golf bag play calls that give him confidence.

Benedetto was 13-for-16 passing for 200 yards and four scores with one interception. He also ran four times for 21 yards.

Holland Patent extended its lead when Benedetto hit Maddox Williams up the sideline for a 32-yard passing score with 9:05 left in the half. The sam wright football point attempt started with a bad snap but holder Caden Briggs tossed the ball to Jordan Carhart in the end zone for two points to make it 15-0.

HP senior running back Bryce Dare started and ended the next scoring drive. He first ran for 20 yards to get the ball to midfield then, holland patent football 2018, after a deep pass to Ernst for 41 yards, Dare carried in from four yards out for a touchdown. That made it 21-0 with 3:23 left in the first half. He set the tone for the final drive of the half as well. Taking over at their own 47 after forcing a Basketball dunk sound effect punt, HP hit on another short pass before Dare took a handoff and rumbled down the sideline for 38 yards. That set up another Benedetto touchdown pass to Williams, this one over the middle from the 6-yard-line. HP took a 28-0 lead into halftime.

“I had a ton of faith in my line,” said Dare after the win. “I knew we’d win in the trenches.” Dare ran for 223 yards on 21 carries and added a catch for eight yards. As a senior, he said he’s been trying to be a leader for a young team that missed out on weeks of preparation this summer and fall. “Keeping the guys on track” is his role, he said.

Benedetto echoed Dare about team building. Both were sophomores during the team’s Section III title run in 2018, holland patent football 2018 learned from the seniors on that team, who “showed us how to be leaders.” Now they’re doing the same to keep building HP’s program.

“Benedetto is a dual threat quarterback,” said head coach Brian Briggs, capable of throwing or running. And he has the solid option of handing off to Dare. “We have so many weapons.”

The Knights didn’t take their foot off the gas in the second half, grabbing the ball on an onside kick to start the third quarter and adding their fifth touchdown off the day on the ensuing drive. Benedetto scrambled for nine yards, and two plays later hit Jordan Koenig with a swing pass for 17 more. Two plays later he hit Ernst for a 17-yard touchdown strike. The extra point made it 35-0.

The HP defense forced a fumbled on the next Camden drive, which was recovered by Jacob Morra. The Knights ran eight plays, six of them to Dare, who ended the drive with a 1-yard plunge to make it 42-0.

Camden’s Eric Mitchell got the Blue Devils on the scoreboard with a 52-yard punt return a minute into the fourth quarter to make it 42-7. TY Fingo recovered the onside kick and then the team added a 13-yard touchdown on a quarterback keeper by Connor Dean to cap a 54-yard drive. The conversion failed and it was 42-13.

Dean ended the day 7-for-16 passing with 109 yards. He also led the team with 47 yards rushing on seven attempts.

“We’ve been waiting a year-and-a-half to play football,” Briggs said. “We have a lot to work on,” he said despite piling up 441 yards of total offense and six scores. The team committed seven penalties for 50 yards and turned the ball over twice.

“They’re real tough,” said Camden head coach Jake Bates of HP. “They made some mistakes early and we didn’t do enough to capitalize.” Offensively, he said, “We’re searching for (an identity).” He said he wants a holland patent football 2018 team but doesn’t have the personnel to play the way he’d like. “We’re going to find out over the next three weeks. I want to give our seniors as much of an opportunity as I can.” He concluded: “Our effort needs to be better than it was today.”

Holland Patent hosts Canastota at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Whitesboro, where the Knights will play their home games this season. Camden hosts New Hartford at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Westmo-Oriskany wins opener

The Westmoreland-Oriskany unified team opened its season with a 41-6 win at Sherburne-Earlville Saturday. Running back Aiden Fabbio scored four times and piled up 165 yards of total offense for the Bulldogs.

  1. I'm trying to connect both my Launchpad Pro and my M-Audio interface/microphone to Ableton Live 9 Lite so I can record both MIDI and audio. I am able to record, but no playback will play through my laptop speakers or headphones plugged into the laptop.
