Regional regulars

The Keene Babe Ruth baseball year-old All-Stars are nearly two hours away in Westfield, Mass., for today’s opening round of the New England Regional tournament.

And despite the distance and alien surroundings, they’re in familiar territory.

When Keene opens against Westfield ma babe ruth baseball, R.I., at 1 p.m., it will mark the third straight year the group of players and coaches will take part in a regional tournament.

Inas year-olds, the group won the Cal Ripken New England Regional, westfield ma babe ruth baseball, which is as far as year-olds can advance. Last year, as year-olds on the larger foot diamonds, Keene reached the Cal Ripken New England Regional in Cheshire, Conn., going two and out.

“I’m pretty excited,” second baseman Ryan Hearn said. “If we play the way we’re capable of, westfield ma babe ruth baseball, we’ll probably go pretty far, westfield ma babe ruth baseball. Hopefully we can win a few games.”

Keene enters the regional tournament on an absolute roll. The team went in district and state tournament play, averaging runs per game and outscoring opponents

“This group has been extremely focused for years,” Keene Coach Tony Neary said. “They come out, westfield ma babe ruth baseball know the job they have to do and they get it done. They know when they get in the batter’s box or go out westfield ma babe ruth baseball the field, they know what they have to do.”

Neary was quick to give his assistant coaches, Pat Hearn and Tim Peloquin, much of the credit for the team’s success.

“The coaching staff has been instrumental in where we are today,” Neary said.

Playing in three straight regional tournaments should give the Keene boys a distinct advantage — experience.

“I’m not nervous at all (to play in the regional tournament),” Keene’s Alex Austin said. “I think we’ll do pretty well. We haven’t lost a game yet.”

Pat Hearn added, “The boys are extremely excited. Each one of these tournaments is a totally new experience, westfield ma babe ruth baseball, but I think we’re ready for it.”

While the potent offense has been key in Keene’s success, Neary said the team also has four talented pitchers with Austin, Seth Cote, Chelso Barrett and Dom Dintino.

The 13s advanced to the regional with a victory over Nashua in the state final last Saturday. In that win, Austin, Cote and Barrett combined to hold Nashua to just five hits. Keene scored the winning run on a squeeze bunt.

“We have combined some small ball in there, and it’s worked for us,” Neary said.

Keene’s offense relies heavily on its top four batters. Lucas Luopa hits leadoff. Jarod Segal, Jeremy Ball and Barrett also have been major parts of the team’s success.

Barrett, who splits his summer between baseball and golf and competed in the N.H. State Amateur, hit two home runs in the state tournament.

“We’ve been fortunate that the golf hasn’t interfered,” Neary said. “He hasn’t missed a game, and he’s been on his game. I think he enjoys being able to run around. The kid probably walks miles a day when he’s out there on the course.”

Keene is looking to atone for last summer’s two-and-out in the year-old regional.

“I’m really excited, because last year didn’t go so well,” James Neary said. “We played some pretty tough teams and we didn’t play that well in the field. But this year, we haven’t made many errors and we’ve been scoring a lot of runs. I feel pretty confident.”

Their experience and recent red-hot play give the Keene All-Stars reasons to feel confident.

“I expect we’ll show fairly well,” the elder Westfield ma babe ruth baseball said. “I expect we’ll play well defensively, and I expect we’ll get our bat on the ball. We’ve been doing that all along.”

The Babe Ruth year-old World Series is slated for Aug. 16 at Jamestown, Westfield ma babe ruth baseball. … The eight-team regional runs through Wednesday at Bullens Field.

Players can be dropped (due to their schedules or injuries) or added after each round of the tournaments, however, once a player is dropped, they cannot return to the roster. In the next westfield ma babe ruth baseball of weeks we will send out a letter of commitment which will ask about your son’s availability for All Star tournaments and activities.

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The Pittsfield Babe Ruth Baseball year-old All-Stars Sunday saw their season come to an end with a loss to Keene, N.H., in the New England Regional at Bullens Field.

The New Hampshire state champions pounded out 12 hits and put the game away with an eight-run sixth inning, handing Pittsfield its third loss in three games of pool play.

"Although the results not what we wanted or expected, we played three very solid teams and very good baseball," Pittsfield manager Bryon Sherman said. "We had a tough draw, but we gave away some outs and at bats.

"That said, we played until the last out each game."

Keene scored three in the top of the first to go up early, but Pittsfield came back with a pair in the bottom of the inning.

Sam Sherman hit a leadoff single. Owen Kroboth ended up driving him home with a single and scoring on Nick Hall's two-out RBI single.

Kaden Codey, Stevie Zuccalo, Anthony Telladira and Michael Britten each had a hit for Pittsfield.

Sherman, Britten and Codey split time on the mound.

Pittsfield once again had trouble turning base runners into runs. It left nine runners on base in the loss.
