The Weave Soccer Drill

Setup

  • Players should create 3 lines at one side of the field, facing the opposite end of the field.
  • A goalie is needed in the net at the opposite end.
  • Each player in the middle line should have a ball.

Instructions

  • The first player in each line starts to run down the field, with the middle player dribbling the ball.
  • The middle player then passes the ball to the right wing player.
  • The passer will then run behind the receiver and become the right wing player, while the receiver will dribble to the middle and then pass the ball to the left wing player.
  • The passer will then run behind the receiver and become the left wing player, while the receiver will dribble to the middle and then pass to the original player.
  • This continues forming a weave pattern.
  • The weave will continue down the field until players reach the 18 yard box at the other end of the field.
  • The last player with the ball takes a shot at the net.

Coaching Tips

  • Players should make lead passes, meaning the ball should be passed ahead of the receiving player in order for them to run onto it.
  • This will help the players get down the field quickly.
  • Players who are overlapping should do so with speed.
  • Make sure the two players who did not take the shot still attack the goal looking for a rebound.
  • If a rebound exists, encourage them to take a shot.

Variations

  • Limit the number of touches to 2 or 3. For example, one touch to receive the ball and the other to pass it.

In the meantime, the trend toward specialized football training in football camps and academies has been growing exponentially. 

Johan Cruyff was a three-time Ballon d’Or winner and an outstanding football coach. In his book “Futbol–Mi Filosofia”, he said that there are five basic elements of football: shooting, heading, dribbling, carrying the ball, and ball control. 

If you want to become a professional football player, these elements are crucial for your success. Some might argue that one element is more important than the other, but keep in mind that top football players have that status because they can do it all. 

Significance of football dribbling skills

Football requires you to make a commitment to the training grounds before you step on the pitch, and efficient football drills set apart professionals from average football players. Each of the five basic elements has a specific set of drills that vastly improve the skills of just about anyone interested in football. Our focus today is on soccer dribbling drills.

It is important to learn how to dribble in soccer at an early age because you can only upgrade your skillset from that point on. Soccer dribbling is an important aspect of the game as it brings out the competitiveness in children. Because of that, dribbling drills for youth soccer teams are a part of every training session at the football schools and academies. However, many professional athletes still use some of the same football dribbling drills because of their efficiency. 

Every soccer fan knows who Messi and Ronaldo are, and just about everyone knows who Diego Armando Maradona is. Many other players like Pele, Ronaldinho, and Neymar share the art of football dribbling that allows them to create space and a better position to score the goal. 

These players are well-known for their ability to storm through the defense, leaving their opponents in the dust because of their masterful football dribbling. What they have learned is how to dribble a soccer ball efficiently. 

Although talent plays an important role, they had to perfect their skills in football training sessions. If you are wondering how to dribble in soccer, it is not enough to watch the greats do it, you will have to train hard. 

Only by committing to these exercises will you become a better football player. Because of your hard work, you will able to maintain possession, advance the ball towards the opponent’s goal, or relieve pressure by creating space. Use of cones for football dribbling development

If you want to know how to dribble a soccer ball properly on your own and get prepared for modern game requirements, you could use the help of cones. Cone drills allow you to improve your ball control and change direction. 

Although cones are immobile and do not resemble a live opponent, do not underestimate the importance of cones because it refines your football dribbling skills. You will need to learn how to move and keep control of the ball before you encounter a real-life defender. These dribbling drills help to improve the player’s weaker foot, which will boost his/her overall confidence in soccer as well as ball control skills.

We have prepared some soccer dribbling drills that will efficiently improve your soccer dribbling. 

Cone Weave

Cone Weave is probably the most popular exercise for the development of dribbling skills, and many have encountered it in an early stage. Even though these cone dribbling drills for soccer are simple, they can have an immense impact as they teach you how to use all parts of your foot and enhance game-specific agility. 

This exercise also improves body positioning. Before doing this drill, set ten to fifteen cones in a straight line about a foot and a half apart from one another. Start by dribbling with one foot in-between each cone to form a small zigzag pattern. This drill is about making as many slight touches as possible. Control each touch and make sure you do not push out and chase the ball. 

You will need to use both inside and outside of your foot to execute this drill properly. If you are doing the drill with your right leg, start by pushing the ball with the outside of your foot around the first cone. Once you reach the second cone, go left and push the ball with the inside of your foot until you reach the third cone. Repeat this around the rest of the cones to complete one repetition. 

The more you practice, the better your dribble will become. There is no limit for this exercise, but you can start by doing five repetitions with each leg. Always concentrate on the ball and your speed will pick up even though you started slow. In the beginning, you might hit a cone, or the ball might escape from you, but the important thing is to continue the drill. Eventually, your dribbling skills will massively improve. 

You can create your versions of Cone Weave, which puts it the group among the most versatile soccer dribbling drills. You could use both feet, but only control the ball with the inside of your foot or the outside of your foot. Also, the number of touches and your body position can vary. 

After some time, try more difficult versions of cone weave like Left or right crossover, Left or right inside-outside or Left or right roll inside touch. But for starters, you will need to master the basic cone weave because it massively improves your ball control and football dribbling.

 

Figure Eight

Figure Eightrequires only two cones set about three to five feet apart. You should dribble the ball in and around the cones, thus creating an imaginary number eight. This football dribbling drill has many versions, but some general rules apply to all of them. Do not take long steps because long steps take more time and you might lose control over the ball. If you take short quick steps while keeping an eye on the ball, your football dribbling will benefit more. 

Position your body correctly, and your legs need to be ready to change direction fast. Make sure you are always over the ball with slightly bent knees because this allows you to have a lower center of gravity. Lower center of gravity means that you would be more balanced while making sharp turns. If you want the right results, you will need to stay relaxed in the beginning and proceed to more difficult versions of “Figure Eight” once you master the basic football dribbling drills. Just like with cone weave, you can start by using the left or right foot, one at a time, to maintain the control over the ball. 

Touching the ball with only one foot allows you to use all the surfaces of the foot, which can be easily transitioned to the game. You could use only the inside or outside of your foot to push the ball and maintain possession. Once you become too comfortable with these basic versions, you can move on to more advanced soccer dribbling that use the same setup like Scissors, V-turn or other. 

 

Zigzag Slalom

Zigzag Slalom combines ball control and speed. This drill will also improve your agility and quickness because it requires you to make a sharp turn and a short-distance sprint. The setup for this exercise is not as simple as the cone weave drill. You will need to set six or seven cones in a straight line about three feet from one another. Make a parallel line of six or seven cones about six feet apart from each other. The two parallel lines should be six feet apart from one another, and the left line should start one and a half feet after the right line. 

If you set the cones properly, you see that they form a zigzag pattern crucial for this drill. Just like cone weave, do this drill with only one foot at a time. Start by going around the first cone on the right side, and the outside of your foot until you reach the first cone. 

Once you get to the first cone, make two touches with the inside of your foot, and push the ball in the direction of the first left cone. Once the ball direction is proper, use the outside of your foot to control the ball and get to the first left cone. Your speed on the turn and after pushing the ball should increase. Once you get to the first left cone, use the inside of your foot to make the turn and go to the second right cone. 

Repeat this process until you have reached the last left cone. Do this drill with your right and left foot five times each.

Diagonal Dribble

Diagonal Dribble is among advanced dribbling drills for soccer because it imitates real-life movement and going through your opponents one by one. You will need only four cones to set up this drill. Place one cone on the ground and put the next about six to eight feet further. The third cone should be twelve to sixteen feet apart from the second one, and these three cones should form a ninety-degree angle. Place the fourth cone six to eight feet from the third cone, and cones number two, three, and four should form a ninety-degree angle. 

This kind of setup combines a shorter and longer distance dribbling in football. As you might have noticed, there is a short length between the first and the second cone, and between the third and the fourth cone. However, once you reach the second cone, cover a longer distance to get to the third cone. 

In the game, you will never have the same setup, but changing direction and covering different lengths with the ball is a constant. Be sure that you do not make long strides, and touch the ball with each step you make.  Start the drill by the first cone, go to the second one, and make a sharp turn. 

The longer distance between the second and the third cone will allow you to speed up, but still pay attention to the ball. Once you reach the third cone, make a sharp turn around it and move to the fourth one. Go all the way around the fourth cone, and get back to the starting position by doing the same movement in reverse. You will complete one repetition once you reach the starting cone, and you could do two repetitions with each foot.

 

Square Dribble

Square Dribbleis a straightforward exercise among advanced dribbling drills in soccer that especially improves your ball control while turning. Before doing this exercise, put four cones on the ground, eight to ten feet apart. 

Place cones in the shape of a square, meaning that every three cones should create a ninety-degree angle. As with previous football dribbling drills, do this exercise with your right and left foot, one at a time. 

Make sure you control the ball with the outside of your foot and move from one cone to the other until you reach the last cone. While you are running towards the last cone, make a turn with the outside of your foot. Once you go around the last cone, return to the starting cone, but use the inside of your foot to cut corners.

Pay attention to the form because you do not want to make lousy turns, and always accelerate immediately after going around a cone.  Just like with diagonal dribble, do this drill at least two times with each foot, and be sure to rest between repetitions.

 

Square Turns

Square Turnsuses the same cone set up as the previous drill because it is only a variation of the square dribble. However, instead of only cutting the ball at ninety degrees and running to the next cone, you will need to go all the way around the cone before proceeding to the next one. This means that you will perform a three-sixty degree turn around each cone. Again, while you are going from the starting to the last cone, use the outside of your foot to make turns. When you reach the last cone, make a turn, and use the inside of your foot to make three-sixty turns. 

Repeat this process at least two times with your right and with your left foot, and rest between repetitions.

 

Football dribbling drills with gates

Football dribbling isn’t only about the change of direction. If you want to become a professional football player, you will need to run with the ball a lot. Once in a while, you will have the opportunity to cover a lot of distance with the ball in a straight line.

Fast Lane Dribbling is among the best soccer dribbling drills that improve your speed with the ball while going linearly, and there are two versions. Before starting this exercise, set six cones in a line seven feet apart. Make a parallel line of cones three feet apart from the first line. The first cone on the right and the first cone on the left create a gate that you should go through and the same applies for the rest of the cones. 

This drill is simple, but effective. Go through each gate as fast as you can, and make sure you stay inside the gate every time. Do not focus on the number of touches that your foot makes with the ball, but maintain control over the ball. Just like with two previous exercises, do this drill with each foot at a time. 

Start at the first gate and push the ball with the outside of your foot. Once your foot moves the ball, immediately plant with your foot, and move the other foot in a running motion. You should take two steps in between the touches to control the ball properly. 

Do this with your right and left foot five times each, and make sure you have enough time to recover between the repetitions. This is among the best exercises for dribbling in soccer when it comes to fast breaks. 

The setup for the Second Version of the Fast Lane Dribbling drill is the same. However, the second version requires you to pay attention to the number of touches while running with the ball. You should touch the ball with every step that you make with your dribbling foot. 

Messi first comes to mind when you do this drill because he always maintains control of the ball as if it is glued to his leg. That is because he touches the ball with his dribbling foot every time he takes a step. You won’t be able to do this drill at full speed, but eventually, your speed will pick up and get close to ninety percent of your max speed.

Make sure that you push the ball with the outside of your foot because it is easier to control the football that way. Do the same number of repetitions with each foot as in previous football dribbling drills. 

 

There are many professionall football academies presented on Sportlane, a player can register for if he/she is ready to give it at least 3 months of soccer training. In general, high-performance football academies have residential programs with duration from 6 to 12 months. 

Shuttle Runs 

Shuttle Runsare among the drills that most athletes do daily, but they are also among the efficient soccer dribbling drills. Soccer dribbling is an art form that requires many stops, changes of direction, and covering distances of different lengths. To learn how to dribble a soccer ball, you will need to know these key elements. That is why shuttle runs are among dribbling drills for youth soccer teams. 

You need at least four gates to execute this exercise and improve your soccer dribbling. Start at the first gate and run with the ball to the second gate. Make sure you touch the ball with each step you take. Once you reach the second gate, make a sharp one-eighty degree turn and return to the first gate. You must speed up as much as you can once you make each turn. Sprint from the first to the third gate, make a sharp turn and go to the first gate. 

To finish one repetition, sprint to the last gate, and return to the starting gate. Repeat this process with each foot at least two times. 

 

Gated Turn 

Even though it seems like an easy drill, Gated Turn combines many essential elements of football. This drill will improve your explosiveness, agility, and ball control both while turning and running linearly. You will only need three cones to set this drill up. In the beginning, make a gate out of two cones that should be three feet apart. The third cone should be about ten feet apart from the gate. Go through the gate, accelerate down to the third cone, and go around it. 

While you are turning, make sure you use the outside of the foot to maintain the control of the ball, and make a sharp turn. Sprint with the ball to the gate and stop the ball at the gate. Do not step on the ball. You should use the outside of your foot to stop the ball, and your body should be positioned laterally when you reach the gate. 

The reason for this kind of body position is that you might need to do this again in the game, and this stance enables you to react swiftly. Do this exercise ten times in a row with your right leg, and rest a bit. Once you recover, execute this drill with your left leg.

It should be noted that the athlete should dedicate his/her training time to different skills beneficial to the game. Along with dribbling, it is recommended to develop passing and shooting skills as well and thus to include football passing drills and football shooting drills into your daily practice.

Players constantly make decisions based on their position in the pitch and whatever is happening behind, in front, and their peripheral vision.Recognition- the ability to continually scan the field- helps in understanding where there is pressure, space, and opportunity, regardless of having the ball or not.

Recognition goes hand in hand with 2 other aspects;anticipation andreaction. Anticipation is all about reading the game to predict the end result following a game-action situation. Excellent anticipation skills will mean nothing if the player can’t react accordingly to ensure that his team stays on the winning side. This is where reaction skills meet recognition and anticipation.

Where does cone exercise come in? In soccer practice drills, thecones mimic the pressure that players find themselves in during the game. As the coach, you can use individual soccer drills with cones to create specific scenarios that your team needs to perfect.

Cone Drills Should Be a Means to an End

There are hundreds (if not thousands) of cone-based soccer training drills that players can use to perfect their anticipation, recognition, and reaction abilities. Practicing different drills is crucial to refining various soccer skills.

But like a great coach, what’s even more critical is ensuring that theplayers understand what is there to learn in every drill. Comprehending what the cone exercise is all about will help them relate the drill to realistic game scenarios, which will better sharpen their decision-making skills.

Good Cone Drills for Soccer

1. Straight Cone Dribble Drill

This drill focuses onimproving the players’ close control. Close control is a crucial soccer skill that requires the players to keep the ball very close to the boot while being aware of their teammates and opponents. Holding the ball at a closer pace while dribbling means that the player can change direction swiftly and move it away from the defender even when under intense pressure.

How to set up

  • Arrange 10 cones in a straight line from one penalty arc to the other. Vary the distance between the cones between 0.8m and 1.5m.

How to execute

  1. At the beginning of the drill, the player will be standing by the first cone with the ball and the coach/trainer at the sideline.
  2. The coach starts the drill by kicking the ball towards the player at high speed.
  3. The player should receive and have control of the ball and then dribble through the cones. Notably, the player should alternate between controlling the ball with the inside part of both feet, outside of both feet, and inside and outside of the right foot, and inside and outside of the left foot.
  4. On the 10th cone, the player goes around the cone with the fewest touches and then sprints towards the first cone at the highest speed possible without losing the ball.
  5. The coach should instruct on the number of reps and any ball control variations to make.

2. Attack the Cone Dribbling Drill

This is another fun dribbling soccer drill that also emphasizes theneed for close ball control and speed. This activity’s simplicity also makes it a good warmup drill for your training sessions.

How to set up

  • Start by grouping your team into small groups of 4 players each. Each unit will require 4 balls and 5 soccer training cones.
  • Set 4 cones to create a 15x15 yard square. Place the 5th cone in the middle of the square.
  • Let a player stand by each of the 4 cones that make the square (you don’t need a player by the middle cone).

How to execute

  1. At the trainer’s cue, all the players dribble the ball towards the middle cone.
  2. Once they reach the cone in the middle, they turn around and pace towards the original cone. The players should push themselves to dribble a little faster with each rep.
  3. Another variation of this drill relies on the same set-up. However, unlike having all 4 players dribbling simultaneously, only the 2 players who are directly opposite of each other dribble at the same time.
  4. In this sequence, the players don’t stop at the middle cone. Instead, they make a move and proceed to the opposite cone before returning to the original cone.

3. Forth and Back Soccer Drill

This 6 cone drill soccer focuses ondeveloping fast feet. When done correctly, it will hone the player’s ability to turn and sprint on a dime. Note that the players need to give their all in terms of speed and strength to reap this drill's benefits.

How to set up

  • Setting up for this drill is generally easy. You position 6 cones in a straight line and with an equal distance between the cones.

How to execute

  1. The player starts by dribbling the ball through the first cone. After reaching cone 2, turn and sprint back to cone 1, this time in a straight line.
  2. At cone 1, dribble with the ball again through cone 1 and 2. At cone 3, make a move and sprint back to cone 1.
  3. Continue to the 6th cone. After the last cone, take a 30-60-second break and start again.

4. 1vs1- 4 Cone Drill Soccer Game

When playing soccer, great players anticipate and read the results of a given action long before taking place. This ability, coupled with frequent changes in direction and speed, enables the players to keep the defenders on their toes at every time. This is precisely what this drill is about.

This drill enhances ball control during the game in relation to the opponent. It teaches the player to concentrate and make fast- sometimes fake- moves when deciding where to move the ball around the opposing players.

How to set up

  • Use 4 cones to make a square grid measuring 15x15 yards.
  • This game is played by 2 players at a time. Group your team into pairs if there are more than 2 players.

How to execute

  1. The game starts with the 2 players standing behind 2 directly opposite cones.
  2. At the whistle blow, player 1 kicks the ball towards player 2. Player 2 starts dribbling the ball towards any of the 3 other cones. At the same time, player 1 chases after player 2 and tries to win the ball.
  3. Player 2 wins 1 point for beating player 1 to reach any of the cones on the sides successfully. However, he gets 2 points for dribbling the ball around player 1 to get to the cone directly opposite his starting point.
  4. Repeat several times with player 2 starting the game.

5. 1 vs 2 Soccer Dribble Drill

This is one of the best 2 cone soccer drills that we’d recommend if you have a few timid players in your team. Low confidence when handling the ball or tackling opponents is the biggest obstacle for most beginners. It’s not only frustrating, but it also leaves the affected players extremely embarrassed, consequently taking the fun out of the game. At worse, low confidence makes all the hard work that the player puts in to learn soccer ball control drills practically useless.

In this soccer running and dribbling drill, player A attempts to tackle two opposing opponents (player B and C) before making a shot at the goal.

How to set up

  • You’ll need 4 cones for this exercise.
  • Make one gate using 2 cones around the penalty arc.
  • Set up the second gate within the penalty box in front of the goal post and some distance from the first gate.
  • With the goalkeeper at the post, there will be one player at each of the two gates. Their role is to tackle the offensive players and prevent them from slipping through the gates towards the goal.
  • All the other players will form the offensive team and will stand in a line a small distance away from the first gate.

How to execute

  1. When the coach/trainer blows the whistle, the first offensive player will dribble the ball and attempt to go around the player guarding the first gate and then the second gate.
  2. After making it through both gates, the offensive player shoots at the goal and tries to score.
  3. The defenders should utilize all their skills and strength to prevent the offense players from going past the gates.
  4. If any of the defenders manage to steal the ball from the offensive player, the latter must join the offensive line again.
  5. If the offensive player manages to get to the goal, the attacker becomes the first of the next pair of defenders.

This is one of the best technical soccer drills that allow the players to put all the skills they have learned into practice. Encourage the players to try any trick that they are confident in.

6. T-cone Soccer Dribbling Drill

The T cone drill soccer workout activity is a popular recommendation in most soccer dribbling drills with cones and a ball. This cone weave drill soccer activity is great for coaches and trainers, focusing oncontrolled touches, dribbling with speed,and general fitness.

How to set up

  • Use 4 cones to make a T. Place one cone to make the base of the T and 3 cones to make its top.
  • This set-up accommodates only 1 player at a time. You may want to create several set-ups to have more players participating at once.

How to execute

  1. The first player will sprint with the ball from the T’s base and dribble around the middle top-cone.
  2. Next, the player heads to the top-right cone and dribbles around it before pacing to the top-left cone.
  3. After dribbling around the top-left cone, the player dribbles around the top-middle cone a second time and then sprints toward the first cone at the T’s base.
  4. Every player repeats the drill for one minute.

The coach should encourage the players to vary their dribbling style by using both feet and the inside and outside parts of each foot.

  2. Coach stays outside the grid and calls out the following commands randomly: go, stop, speed up, slow down, right turn, left turn, and u-turn.

Last week we looked at how you could use your training hurdles and the week before that our focus was on agility ladders. This week we’re putting cones and markers in the spotlight. A set of training cones and markers is an extremely versatile piece of equipment. They can be used to for setting up and creating any number of drills to get your players fighting fit. With just a few cones, you can ensure that you are helping build your players’ skills and helping with their endurance. Use them to mark up a pitch for training matches or set them out for agility and speed drills. It’s one of the essentials for any team.

Slalom

  1. Place 10 cones in a line approximately 5 yards/4.5 metres apart.
  2. Weave in and out as quickly as possible.
  3. Walk back to the start.

Weave

  1. Place 4 markers in a straight line around 3 yards/2.7 metres apart.
  2. Place a marker in between each of these but 3 yards to the left.
  3. Sprint from one marker to the next.
  4. Focus on taking quick side steps instead of turning to face the markers.

Box Drill

  1. Use four cones to mark out a square of around 5 yard/4.5 metres.
  2. Place a 5th cone in the centre of the square. This is the starting position.
  3. Give each corner a number. Shout out the numbers at random.
  4. The player must sprint to the relevant number and return to the centre cone.

L Drill

  1. Set up 3 cones in an L shape. Place each cone 5 yards apart.
  2. Start at one end of the L and sprint to the middle cone.
  3. Return to the first cone.
  4. Sprint around the middle cone to reach the far cone.
  5. Sprint around it and return to the middle cone.
  6. Turn at the middle cone and return to the start.

Shuffle

  1. Set out 3 cones in a straight line each one 5 yards apart.
  2. Start at cone 2 and move laterally to the cone 3.
  3. Turn and sprint to cone 1.
  4. Turn again and sprint back to the starting cone.

Run-Shuffle-Run

  1. Set up 4 cones in a line. Set the middle two cones 4 yards apart and then place a cone on either side 5 yards apart.
  2. Start at one end and sprint to the 2nd cone.
  3. Sidestep to the 3rd cone.
  4. Sprint to the 4th cone.
  5. Turn and sprint back to the 3rd
  6. Sidestep to the 2nd
  7. Sprint to the 1st

Ball Control Drills

Add a training ball into the equation and your set of cones can really help your players improve their dribbling. There are plenty of great dribbling drills for you to try with your cones. You can set them up in a line and weave in and out of them. Set up two rows and slalom between all of the cones. Or you could set up a tunnel of cones and get your players to dribble as fast as they can from one end to the other, making sure they focus on keeping the ball within the cones.

Cone weave drill soccer - really. And

Setup

Place eight cones in a straight line with two and a half yards of space in between them, which allows players to weave in between the cones.

Purpose

Utilize this drill to work on player quickness and change of direction. When a player loses their footing on the football field because they try and fail to quickly change direction, it can ruin the entire play.  This drill requires your players to build up the muscle memory it takes to quickly and safely change directions.

Drill Description

There are two different versions of the weave drill that both feature different types of changes of direction.

The first version alternates players between a forward sprint to a backward back peddle. Each player takes a few quick steps forward, then opens up their hips to begin a back peddle at an angel.  Due to the face that this drill alternates the angels of the turns, it requires players to open up their hips and work on a different angle of the footwork and agility.

The second version alternates players between a forward sprint and a sideways shuffle.  Each player sprints forward in between cones, and after passing a cone, takes two shuffle steps to the side, before entering a sprint forward again past the next cone.

To be a better soccer player, you have to do more than the average soccer player. I’ve been playing soccer since I was a kid, and practicing off the field was crucial to improving my soccer skills.

Practice soccer at home to improve your footwork, passing, and shooting skills. There are key training drills to perform that will work on each aspect of playing soccer. Most professional soccer players spend many hours practicing off the field in their spare time.

What You’ll need: Most of these training drills can be done with a soccer ball and yourself. Some require cones or something you can put on the ground as a marker. You will definitely benefit from having a soccer goal or training net of some kind (Here Are My Favorites), but if you can’t afford those, you can still get better at soccer using these drills.

1. T-Cone Weave

You will need a soccer ball and some cones or other markers to do this. Setup by placing the cones about 5 yards apart in a ‘T’ pattern. The base of the ‘T’ will be your starting point. You will dribble the ball throughout the cones in this drill. Here the steps to perform the T-Cone weave drill:

  • Move to the top center cone and around it to the left
  • Move to the bottom of the left cone and around the top
  • Sprint clear across the top of the ‘T’ while dribbling
  • Circle around the far right cone
  • Move above the top middle cone
  • Sprint while dribbling back to the bottom starting cone

Those steps make one loop through the T-Cone drill, you can continue through 10 iterations of this. Try working on sprinting between cones and slowing down to focus on footwork as you round the cones.

2. Ball Trapping

You can do this drill with just yourself and a soccer ball. Trapping the ball is when you receive a pass or a fly ball and you bring the soccer ball down into your control. Start by throwing the ball into the air, running to get under it, and using your body to get the ball in your control.

Use your chest, knees, and legs to slow the ball. Bring your foot up to the ball and lower your leg as your foot makes contact to slow the ball to the ground. The point is to prevent the soccer ball from bouncing too much so you can gain control faster.

For some variation, you could also use a wall or soccer trainer equipment to bounce the ball off of. This will give you different incoming angles of the soccer ball, allowing you to practice more real life scenarios.

3. Cone Slalom

You can do this drill with a soccer ball and some cones. Place the cones on the ground in a straight line about 5 yards apart. Start on the left side of the first cone and dribble towards the right side of the second cone. Alternate which side of the cone you move with ball on as you advance through the rest of the cones. Turn around at the end and do the same on your way back through to the start.

As a variation, move the cones further apart to start with and then move them closer together as your skills improve. This drill is all about ball handling at speed while moving down the field.

4. Wall Pass

The wall pass drill will require a soccer trainer or a wall to bounce the soccer ball off of. You will practice you passing skills by kicking the ball at the wall with the inside of your foot. To practice harder passes, try to kick the ball with the inside of the laces on your soccer cleats or shoes.

As a variation, try passing to the wall at an angle and running to trap the ball after the bounce off the wall. Move back and forth to practice passing on the move and trapping the ball. Aim for the same spot on the wall every time, and you will have to run to catch the ball after your pass.

5. Wall Juggle

To do the wall juggle you will need a soccer ball and a wall or trainer. The goal is to keep the ball from touching the ground while using the wall to juggle with. To juggle the ball you are kicking the ball into the air and keeping it in the air by kicking the ball again before it hits the ground.

For beginners I suggest letting the ball hit the wall, then the ground, then kick it again. As you get more advanced, try juggling the ball a couple times yourself before kicking towards the wall again. Change up between kicking with your laces and the inside of your foot.

Here’s a good video showing you the different ways you can practice a wall juggle.

Every few juggles, kick the ball at the trainer or the wall and then return to a juggle before the ball hits the ground. Many players find this drill helps them improve their juggling skills which is always a nice trick to show off, but also improves your ball handling on the field.

6. Wall Hammer Catch

This drill is similar to the wall pass, but you want to focus more on your trapping skills rather than your passing skills. Hammer the ball at a wall or trainer and be prepared for the rebound. Catch the ball with your legs and feet after it rebounds from the wall.

This will help train your trapping or catching abilities. If you can, stand far enough away from the wall to practice this drill at a bit of an angle. Being able to react and quickly trap a fast moving ball is a key skill in soccer.

7. High Speed Dribble

You will need some open space and a soccer ball for the high speed dribble drill. You want to sprint while maintaining control of the ball. Start off slowly if you need to, and increase speed as your skills improve. As a variation, practice slowing down and speeding back up while maintaining control of the ball.

8. Shuttle Run Dribble

You may have heard of this basic shuttle run drill before, it’s used in most sports. Lay down four markers or cones in a straight line. Give yourself a starting point about 5-10 yards from the first cone, you will need to return to this point multiple times throughout the drill. Perform the shuttle run dribble steps while controlling the ball.

Start by moving to the first cone, around it, and back to the starting point. Do the same to the second cone, then the third, and forth. This will help you work on speed at different distance while handling the ball.

9. Quick Shooting

This quick shooting drill requires a soccer net and a soccer ball. You will start by moving with the ball while controlling the soccer ball. Shoot at the goal while you are still moving with the ball at a good speed. Being able to shoot at the net while moving with a soccer ball is key to playing soccer.

As a variation, start with slow movement until your skill improves, then speed up little by little. You want to be able to actually make the goal. Once you’r making most of the shots you take, start running this drill with more speed.

10. Ball Push Pull

You can do this drill with just yourself and a soccer ball. You can ever perform the ball push pull inside, you won’t need to move around much or even kick the ball for that matter. Start by standing with one foot on the ball with the ball at the center of your foot. Move your foot forward and backward while remaining in contact with the ball.

Your foot should move so that your heel, then the center of your foot, and lastly your toes are making contact with the ball. This drill just gets you more familiar with the soccer ball, and helps you work on control.

This drill requires a soccer ball and a soccer net. You want to start by positioning your self to the side of the net. Take shots at the net from extreme angles that you could find yourself in on the soccer field. Try starting at a 45 degree angle and increasing the angle difficulty with each shot you take.

12. Toe Taps

Start by standing with your feet about shoulder width apart and the ball about a foot away in front of you. Sometimes this drill is referred to as the stair stepper, because you simply move one foot up and tap the top of the ball with your toe. Alternate between left right as fast you can.

This drill seems really easy, but the goal is that the ball shouldn’t move. So as your tapping, you are also slightly hitting the ball back into it’s starting position. The ball will move slightly with each tap, but keep trying to tap the ball only enough to get it to stay in place.

This drill only requires a soccer ball, but you can setup a cone to mark your turn around point if you’d like. You will start by dribbling the ball using the inside and outside of only one foot. After you turn around and move back to the starting position, use the inside and outside of only your other foot.

The goal here is to practice your footwork. Don’t worry about speed or trying to get to the turn around and back as fast as possible. Instead focus on number of touches. Only move the ball a short distance with each touch to force your self to use both inside and outside of your foot.

14. Circle Drill

For this drill you will need a soccer ball and cones. Place the cones in a big circle about 10 yards in diameter. Move around the circle at speed while maintaining control of the ball. Try not to let the ball cross the imaginary circle created by the cones, but keep it as close as possible. This forces you to remain close to the circle to improve your speed.

You will need cones or ground markers and a soccer ball for the sideways box move drill. Place cones to make two boxes on the grass about 5-10 yards apart. Start in one box and move to the other in a sideways motion. Once you have entered the box and stopped the ball, move back to the other box while controlling the ball in a sideways motion.

You will need to use the inside of one foot and the outside of the other to move correctly in a sideways dribble. This drill helps improve your ball handling skills, as well as starting and stopping a dribble.

16. Attacking Move

This drill works best with at least three cones set up in a straight line about 5 yards apart. You start at the first cone and move towards the last cone while avoiding the cone in the middle. Think of the middle cone as an opponent and maneuver around them appropriately.

Practice by slowing down as you approach the middle cone, keep control of the ball around the cone, and then explode away from the cone to the end point. This drill is all about quick movements to avoid players. This will help you get better at avoiding opponents on the field while maintaining control of the ball.

17. Zig Zag Weave

The zig zag weave will require some cones and a soccer ball. Lay the cones out in a straight line only a few feet apart. This setup will look similar to the slalom drill above, except the cones should be much closer together. Move through the cones alternating between the left and right side of the cone while also alternating between using only your left or right foot.

Do not worry about speed with this drill. The goal here is to improve you footwork, so just worry about getting the ball to zig zag between the cones and which foot you are using to dribble with.

18. Figure 8 Drill

This drill requires some cones and a soccer ball. Start by setting the cones up in a figure 8 pattern. You will perform this drill much like the circle drill, staying on the outside of the figure 8 as best you can. Move while dribbling the ball around the figure 8, stay as close to the figure 8 as you can without crossing over the cones.

The figure 8 allows you to try different turn maneuvers while maintaining control of the ball. As a variation, make the figure 8 smaller or larger to practice a different turning radius.

To practice headers, you only need yourself and a soccer ball. Throw the ball up into the air, position your self under the ball, and try hitting the ball with your head. Aim for a spot on the ground in front of you that you are trying to hit the ball to.

As a variation, try hitting the ball more than once before hitting towards the spot on the ground. Or throw the ball off a wall and try to bring the ball down into your control using your head. In soccer, the ball will be in the air around you and you will need to be able to gain control of the ball using your head sometimes.

20. Gated Obstacle

You can practice the gated obstacle drill with some cones and a soccer ball. You will place obstacles around the field about 5 yards apart in a diamond shaped pattern. The obstacle will be two cones placed side by side with enough room for a soccer ball to fit through them. You will move from one obstacle to the other, keeping in mind that the soccer ball needs to pass through the obstacle.

As a variation, try some other shapes for the obstacles:

  • ‘T’ shape
  • Slalom
  • Diamond Shape
  • Boxed Obstacles
  • Triangle
  • Zig Zag

21. Juggle Pass/Shoot

This drill works best if you have a soccer net. You start by juggling the soccer ball and ending the juggle with a shot at the net. Practice ball control and foot eye coordination. Try using one leg only, switching between legs after each shot. Also, try some ground passes to end the juggle rather than a shot at the goal.

22. Ground Pass

To practice the ground pass you will need a soccer ball. Having a trainer or a wall will make the best use of your time. Practice your ground pass at a wall or trainer from different angles. I suggest a wall or soccer trainer because then you won’t need to be running after the ball all the time.

A ground pass is pass where the ball doesn’t leave the ground. Try passing with the inside of your foot. Work on giving more power to the kick while maintaining accuracy.

23. Line Shooting

This is one of the most common soccer training drills. You will need a soccer net and multiple soccer balls for this one. Line the soccer balls up to be shot into the net. I found using at least 6 soccer balls works best with this drill. The goal is to practice shooting at the net without the distraction of retrieving the ball after every shot.

Aim for different places in the soccer net and try to improve your accuracy with each shot. Start out close to the net, and move out further with each set of shots you take.

24. Rolling Shot

This drill requires a soccer ball and a net. Roll the soccer ball out in front of you and take a shot at the net. You want to practice taking a shot with a moving ball. You may need to get up a running start before rolling the ball to take the shot at faster speeds.

Try doing this drill at different angles to the net and aiming for different areas of the net. As you get more accurate with your shots, move away from the net a few yards at a time.

25. Below Knee Juggle

You will need a soccer ball to practice the below knee juggle. Start by juggling the soccer ball as you normally would. Then, try only hitting the ball high enough that it doesn’t get above your knees. This can be more difficult than it sounds, but will really help improve your ball control and movement.

26. Seated Juggle

With just a soccer ball, sit on the ground and try to juggle the ball with your feet. This may seem like it has no application to playing soccer on a field but it will help improve your ball control. This is a good one you can do inside while watching TV if you have the space.

Training in soccer takes time and energy. If you can put your best effort in, you’ll see results. Why Cones are Important in Soccer Practice Sessions

The game of soccer is full of decisions. Players constantly make decisions based on their position in the pitch and whatever is happening behind, in front, and their peripheral vision.Recognition- the ability to continually scan the field- helps in understanding where there is pressure, space, and opportunity, regardless of having the ball or not.

Recognition goes hand in hand with 2 other aspects;anticipation andreaction. Anticipation is all about reading the game to predict the end result following a game-action situation. Excellent anticipation skills will mean nothing if the player can’t react accordingly to ensure that his team stays on the winning side. This is where reaction skills meet recognition and anticipation.

Where does cone exercise come in? In soccer practice drills, thecones mimic the pressure that players find themselves in during the game. As the coach, you can use individual soccer drills with cones to create specific scenarios that your team needs to perfect.

Cone Drills Should Be a Means to an End

There are hundreds (if not thousands) of cone-based soccer training drills that players can use to perfect their anticipation, recognition, and reaction abilities. Practicing different drills is crucial to refining various soccer skills.

But like a great coach, what’s even more critical is ensuring that theplayers understand what is there to learn in every drill. Comprehending what the cone exercise is all about will help them relate the drill to realistic game scenarios, which will better sharpen their decision-making skills.

Good Cone Drills for Soccer

1. Straight Cone Dribble Drill

This drill focuses onimproving the players’ close control. Close control is a crucial soccer skill that requires the players to keep the ball very close to the boot while being aware of their teammates and opponents. Holding the ball at a closer pace while dribbling means that the player can change direction swiftly and move it away from the defender even when under intense pressure.

How to set up

  • Arrange 10 cones in a straight line from one penalty arc to the other. Vary the distance between the cones between 0.8m and 1.5m.

How to execute

  1. At the beginning of the drill, the player will be standing by the first cone with the ball and the coach/trainer at the sideline.
  2. The coach starts the drill by kicking the ball towards the player at high speed.
  3. The player should receive and have control of the ball and then dribble through the cones. Notably, the player should alternate between controlling the ball with the inside part of both feet, outside of both feet, and inside and outside of the right foot, and inside and outside of the left foot.
  4. On the 10th cone, the player goes around the cone with the fewest touches and then sprints towards the first cone at the highest speed possible without losing the ball.
  5. The coach should instruct on the number of reps and any ball control variations to make.

2. Attack the Cone Dribbling Drill

This is another fun dribbling soccer drill that also emphasizes theneed for close ball control and speed. This activity’s simplicity also makes it a good warmup drill for your training sessions.

How to set up

  • Start by grouping your team into small groups of 4 players each. Each unit will require 4 balls and 5 soccer training cones.
  • Set 4 cones to create a 15x15 yard square. Place the 5th cone in the middle of the square.
  • Let a player stand by each of the 4 cones that make the square (you don’t need a player by the middle cone).

How to execute

  1. At the trainer’s cue, all the players dribble the ball towards the middle cone.
  2. Once they reach the cone in the middle, they turn around and pace towards the original cone. The players should push themselves to dribble a little faster with each rep.
  3. Another variation of this drill relies on the same set-up. However, unlike having all 4 players dribbling simultaneously, only the 2 players who are directly opposite of each other dribble at the same time.
  4. In this sequence, the players don’t stop at the middle cone. Instead, they make a move and proceed to the opposite cone before returning to the original cone.

3. Forth and Back Soccer Drill

This 6 cone drill soccer focuses ondeveloping fast feet. When done correctly, it will hone the player’s ability to turn and sprint on a dime. Note that the players need to give their all in terms of speed and strength to reap this drill's benefits.

How to set up

  • Setting up for this drill is generally easy. You position 6 cones in a straight line and with an equal distance between the cones.

How to execute

  1. The player starts by dribbling the ball through the first cone. After reaching cone 2, turn and sprint back to cone 1, this time in a straight line.
  2. At cone 1, dribble with the ball again through cone 1 and 2. At cone 3, make a move and sprint back to cone 1.
  3. Continue to the 6th cone. After the last cone, take a 30-60-second break and start again.

4. 1vs1- 4 Cone Drill Soccer Game

When playing soccer, great players anticipate and read the results of a given action long before taking place. This ability, coupled with frequent changes in direction and speed, enables the players to keep the defenders on their toes at every time. This is precisely what this drill is about.

This drill enhances ball control during the game in relation to the opponent. It teaches the player to concentrate and make fast- sometimes fake- moves when deciding where to move the ball around the opposing players.

How to set up

  • Use 4 cones to make a square grid measuring 15x15 yards.
  • This game is played by 2 players at a time. Group your team into pairs if there are more than 2 players.

How to execute

  1. The game starts with the 2 players standing behind 2 directly opposite cones.
  2. At the whistle blow, player 1 kicks the ball towards player 2. Player 2 starts dribbling the ball towards any of the 3 other cones. At the same time, player 1 chases after player 2 and tries to win the ball.
  3. Player 2 wins 1 point for beating player 1 to reach any of the cones on the sides successfully. However, he gets 2 points for dribbling the ball around player 1 to get to the cone directly opposite his starting point.
  4. Repeat several times with player 2 starting the game.

5. 1 vs 2 Soccer Dribble Drill

This is one of the best 2 cone soccer drills that we’d recommend if you have a few timid players in your team. Low confidence when handling the ball or tackling opponents is the biggest obstacle for most beginners. It’s not only frustrating, but it also leaves the affected players extremely embarrassed, consequently taking the fun out of the game. At worse, low confidence makes all the hard work that the player puts in to learn soccer ball control drills practically useless.

In this soccer running and dribbling drill, player A attempts to tackle two opposing opponents (player B and C) before making a shot at the goal.

How to set up

  • You’ll need 4 cones for this exercise.
  • Make one gate using 2 cones around the penalty arc.
  • Set up the second gate within the penalty box in front of the goal post and some distance from the first gate.
  • With the goalkeeper at the post, there will be one player at each of the two gates. Their role is to tackle the offensive players and prevent them from slipping through the gates towards the goal.
  • All the other players will form the offensive team and will stand in a line a small distance away from the first gate.

How to execute

  1. When the coach/trainer blows the whistle, the first offensive player will dribble the ball and attempt to go around the player guarding the first gate and then the second gate.
  2. After making it through both gates, the offensive player shoots at the goal and tries to score.
  3. The defenders should utilize all their skills and strength to prevent the offense players from going past the gates.
  4. If any of the defenders manage to steal the ball from the offensive player, the latter must join the offensive line again.
  5. If the offensive player manages to get to the goal, the attacker becomes the first of the next pair of defenders.

This is one of the best technical soccer drills that allow the players to put all the skills they have learned into practice. Encourage the players to try any trick that they are confident in.

6. T-cone Soccer Dribbling Drill

  4. Every player repeats the drill for one minute.

The coach should encourage the players to vary their dribbling style by using both feet and the inside and outside parts of each foot.

Soccer Cone Drills for One Person to Practice

Dribbling is a key soccer skill and it’s one that’s pretty easy to practice. If you have a ball and a grassy area to play in, you can easily work on your skills by yourself since dribbling is at its core an individual act.

But if you want to commit to improving your dribbling as significantly as possible, you’ll want to add some structure to your individual training.

Specifically, using soccer cones for dribbling is a great way to practice because they allow you to replicate more game-like situations: quick changes of direction, dribbling in tight spaces, and practicing different dribbling moves (link).

Getting a small set of soccer cones, ideally disc cones but full size ones work fine, is cheap and can be a good investment. And if you don’t have any cones at all you can set up a series of shoes, other balls, or similar small objects for you to dribble through.

Best Soccer Cone Dribbling Drills

When it comes to actually setting up cones for working on your dribbling individually, there are multiple ways to do it.

One is to set up a straight line line of cones for you to dribble through (like with the bowling pins in the above image).

The closer you space the cones, the more difficult the drill will be.

Where to Place the Cones: Setting the cones down in a straight line about 2 yards apart will help you with close control, while increasing the distance is good for beginners since it gives you a little more space.

One option is to set up the cones in a T formation and dribble to the middle top cone, cut to one side, do a turn around that cone, sprint dribble to the other side, and then dribble to the bottom cone. Any dribbling exercise also helps with your fitness and this one especially so.

You can also set up three cones in a triangle about 2 feet apart, and dribble through them similar to how you did with the straight line.

Specifically to help you work on your dribbling moves, like the stop and go and the pull back V, you can do a great drill with only one cone.

Dribble at the cone from about 10 yards away and treat it as a defender. Perform your move without getting too close, and then change direction with a burst of speed into space.

When you’re learning how to dribble to beat an opponent, change of pace and change of direction are the two crucial aspects to doing it successfully, so focus on those with all of your dribbling practice.

Drill Setup

  1. Set up four cones approximately 5 yards apart in the shape of the letter T.
  2. Two players at the T-Cones with one ball at the base of the T. One player will rest while the other player is working.
  3. Create multiple T-Cone setups to allow the entire team to participate.

  1. The first player starts at the T's base and dribbles around the middle-top cone, and cuts to the right-top cone.

This week we’re putting cones and markers in the spotlight. A set of training cones and markers is an extremely versatile piece above ground swimming pools spokane equipment. Slalom

  2. Weave in and out as quickly as possible.
  3. Walk back to the start.

Weave

  1. Place 4 markers in a straight line around 3 yards/2.7 metres apart.
  2. Place a marker in between each of these but 3 yards to the left.
  3. Sprint from one marker to the next.

Box Drill

  1. Use four cones to mark out a square of around 5 yard/4.5 metres.
  2. Place a 5th cone in the centre of the square. This is the starting position.

  4. The player must sprint to the relevant number and return to the centre cone.

L Drill

  1. Set up 3 cones in an L shape. Place each cone 5 yards apart.
  2. Start at one end of the L and sprint to the middle cone.
  3. Return to the first cone.
  4. Sprint around the middle cone to reach the far cone.
  5. Sprint around it and return to the middle cone.
  6. Turn at the middle cone and return to the start.

Shuffle

  1. Set out 3 cones in a straight line each one 5 yards apart.
  2. Start at cone 2 and move laterally to the cone 3.
  3. Turn and sprint to cone 1.
  4. Turn again and sprint back to the starting cone.

Run-Shuffle-Run

  1. Set up 4 cones in a line. Set the middle two cones cone weave drill soccer yards apart and then place a cone on either side 5 yards apart.
  2. Start at one end and sprint to the 2nd cone.
  3. Sidestep to the 3rd cone.
  4. Sprint to the 4th cone.
  5. Turn and sprint back to the 3rd

Add a training ball into the equation and your set of cones can really help your players improve their dribbling. There are plenty of great dribbling drills for you to try with your cones. You can set them up in a line and weave in and out of them. Set up two rows and slalom between all of the cones. Or you could set up a tunnel of cones and get your players to dribble as fast as they can from one end to the other, making sure they focus on keeping the ball within the cones.

  1. In what way is it better it's still not as fast still not as smooth can't even compare to the graphics in games (this tablet was only made to try n close the gap between them n apple n they still ain't even close)
