Hoch hacks

April 10, 2019

Hoch hack was a term introduced to me by Mariah Ewing sometime ago, I’m not exactly sure when. I do know, however, that Hoch hacks have had a profound impact on my experience at Harvey Mudd. You’ve probably seen life hacks before, and a Hoch hack is similar. It’s simply hack for the Hoch.

Students sit together at a long table next to a window inside of The Hoch

The Hoch Shanahan Dining Hall (The Hoch) is the on campus dining hall for HMC

If you are a freshman or a student living in a suite without a kitchen (which is almost everybody), then you must be on the meal plan. If you are like most people, and are too lazy to walk to a different dining hall, then that means you will probably be eating a decent amount of meals at the dining hall on Mudd’s campus, which is the Hoch. This is why it is so important, I might even say vital, to learn these Hoch hacks.

In this blog post, I will be teaching you some Hoch hacks from my friends, hacks from the the Hoch hacks email thread, and also hacks from my own repertoire. These hacks that you are about to learn are just to get you started. After a couple of weeks swiping into the dining hall, you will have probably created your own Hoch hacks. You might even write a blog post about them.

In no specific order:

“Toss My Salad” –Mariah

At the choose-your-toppings salad bar, the chefs used to mix your salad for you. But one day, they stopped doing that. Luckily, there is an easy hack to toss your own salad. If you have a to-go box, you can just close and shake the box (it is suggested that you get your salad first before visiting other bars so that you don’t shake all of your food together). If you got a bowl, then you can just grab a plate, use it to cover the bowl, and shake.

“Avocado Toast” –Unknown founder

This hack is taken from the Hoch hack email thread, so I will include the email’s description of this hack:

“This very hip food is a total option at the Salad Line. They have nice (healthy :/ ) bread next to the salad and you can ask for avocado (with the other proteins/meats). Put on your birkenstocks, roll up your yoga mats, and get yourself some avocado toast!” -Mariah’s email

“Just Add Cumin” –Neeta R.

The title says it all. If you want to upgrade your meal, just add cumin.

Neeta is holding the shaker jar of cumin from the seasoning bar

“Spinach ‘Sandwich’ ” –Lin

After mentioning the topic for this blog post, Lin told me about one of her hacks that was so innovative, I had to include it. She said that she would normally do this when she was short on time and wanted to have some sort of warm vegetable. First, she would head over to the pizza bar and grab a couple of slices. Then, she went to the salad bar and got spinach. She put the spinach on top of one slice, and she put the other slice face down onto that, thus creating what she called a spinach sandwich. I agree that it qualifies as a sandwich, and it maybe even qualifies as a panini.

“Everything is a Salad Bar” –me

Sometimes, the choose-your-toppings salad bar just has too long of a line. It’s disappointing, because the DIY salad bar does not have as many toppings and the options are not as exciting. But, I’ve found that I can still make an inspiring salad by using ingredients around the dining hall. For instance, you can get some good grilled veggies at the sandwich bar, and if you like cheese on your salads, you can find parmesan by the pizza. If you want a better salad dressing, you can mix the toppings from the sandwich bar (it has hummus, pesto, mustard, and many more). If you want to make a fancy niçoise salad, you can get potatoes and green beans from one of the bars on the left (I think it’s called Chef’s Corner). You’d be surprised just how many things qualify as a salad topping.

The sandwich bar has tuna, cheese slices, onion slices, roasted veggies, banana peppers, more sliced meat, and spreads like hummus and mustard

To a regular person, this probably just looks like a sandwich bar. But if you have an imagination, this can also be a salad bar

The fajita topping bar has guac, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, cilantro, green onions, and pico de gallo

On this day, one of the other bars had fajitas, so there were fajita toppings. Most people would overlook this array of toppings for their salad. Don’t do that!

“Breakfast of Champions” –Isaac Z.

With this breakfast, you’re sure to stay awake through your first class. It provides caffeine, fiber, and a nice crunch. Simply take your cup of Hoch coffee, then fill it with your favorite cereal.

Isaac is eating a cup full of frosted mini wheats and coffee

Harvey's Build-A-Bowl with salad, chicken, guacamole, salsa, cucumber, tomato and Asian Sesame dressing

Fast food is becoming much more healthy, which is great when you are on the move and need to refuel. The trend towards a low-carb diet means that many fast food restaurants are adapting their menus to include low-carb menu options. Harvey’s has done just that with their new Build-A-Bowl. I was invited to try Harvey’s Build-A-Bowl at their Beaches location in Toronto.

Harvey's at Queen Street East and Coxwell Avenue

Whenever I order a hamburger from Harvey’s, I never eat the bun so I was pleased to learn about their Build-A-Bowl since it features all the protein and vegetables, but very few carbs.

Here’s how you create your own Build-A-Bowl:

  1. You choose the base of the bowl which includes salad, rice or fries;
  2. You then choose your protein: chicken, veggie, Angus beef or Harvey’s Original beef;
  3. You then choose your toppings. You can choose from Harvey’s standard toppings, which include tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, onions, but you can also choose from their additional toppings that they have introduced for Build-A-Bowl, which include guacamole, salsa, corn & black beans, crispy noodles, croutons and several dressings including Asian Sesame, Greek and Sweet Chili Thai Sauce.
Toppings for Harvey's Build-A-Bowl

I chose salad as my base, chicken as my protein and the following toppings: guacamole, salsa, tomatoes, cucumber and Asian Sesame dressing.

Harvey's Build-A-Bowl with salad, chicken, guacamole, salsa, cucumber, tomato and Asian Sesame dressing

My dining partner chose salad as her base, veggie burger as her protein and guacamole, crispy noodles, tomatoes and Asian Sesame dressing as her toppings.

Harvey's Build-A-Bowl with salad, veggie protein, crispy noodles, guacamole, tomatoes and Asian Sesame dressing

The ingredients in both of our Build-A-Bowls were very fresh. The salad base featured romaine lettuce, radicchio and shredded carrots. I particularly liked the guacamole and would have liked a little more added to my bowl. The salsa had a bit of heat to it, which added some kick to the dish. There was a good amount of tasty, grilled chicken in my bowl. The Asian Sesame dressing was okay, although I found it a bit too sweet. Overall, though, we were both pleased with the ingredients in our Build-A-Bowls.

Harvey’s Build-A-Bowl starts at $7.49 depending on the proteins you order. The Build-A-Bowl with chicken is $7.99 plus tax and the Build-A-Bowl with veggie protein is $7.49 plus tax.

Build-A-Bowl is a healthy offering from Harvey’s, just in time for spring and summer.

Harvey's & Swiss Chalet Combo

Your trust is our top concern, so businesses can't pay to alter or remove their reviews. Learn more.

  • I recently tried their new build-a-bowl (it's like Freshii but less expensive). You choose your base (salad, rice or fries), and protein (burger, veggie burger, grilled chicken, crispy chicken, or buffalo chicken), then you get unlimited toppings and sauce. The price is  $5.49 - $8.29 depending on your protein choice.

Since they just launched the build-a-bowl, they have a promotion going on until March 26, 2017 where all bowls are half price with a coupon you can get online and show them on your phone.

I was so pleasantly surprised that the salad base was actually a mixed greens salad (not just primarily iceberg and romaine like most fast food restaurant salads). I need to add that I got another salad bowl at another Harvey's location and that one was just iceberg and romaine, so this Orleans location is definitely more awesome than others.

The grilled chicken was real chicken meat and not fake processed meat like the "grilled chicken" at Subway. They grill it when you order it, so it's hot. And it doesn't taste spongy and weird like I've always found the chicken at Freshii.

The unlimited free toppings are all the usual burger toppings they have (which includes guacamole, which most restaurants charge a premium for) and they added some new toppings like black bean and roasted corn, croutons, and crunchy noodles.

I love that Harvey's is introducing healthier options. And with their model of letting you choose your own burger toppings, they are best positioned of all the fast food burger restaurants to hop on the trendy build your own salad bowl/rice bowl wagon. I really hope that this idea sticks and they continue to offer the build-a-bowl and this doesn't end up like the ill-fated McPizza.

Anyway, this Orleans location is great. Staff are nice, service is quick and the restaurant is clean.

It's in the same plaza as the Real Canadian Superstore. They also have a drive thru.

  • They have new hot dogs that are DISGUSTING! Worst hot dog I have ever had. The poutine was meh. Won't be eating at this Harvey's again.

  • Management seems to have changed at this Harvey's.  I ordered a regular Burger combo this visit.  The guy cooking the burgers did not seem to take any pride in the the food he was preparing for customers.  The thin patty that he cooked for me was previously cooked and was burnt on both sides.  The cook was way too busy socializing with the women that work there, he had no concern for the food he was preparing.

Very poor management that would hire such an important role in this fast food place.  I was a regular customer, but now I shall not return ever.

Five stars because this is the most generous Harvey's that I have been to.  The fries are piled high.  No other Harvey's does this like they do here.  The soda is a serve yourself method allowing you to go back for free refills.  Staff are very friendly and willing to help you.

I will no longer eat at other Harvey's because I feel ripped of on portion size.

I love Harvey's burgers and this place is the best managed.

  • The food was yummy! They forgot one of our fries which sucked but have been pretty happy with Harvey's otherwise

  • Forgot the chicken in my poutine but apart from that it was tasty! Will definitely go back

  • We went there today. Drive thru. Excellent service. It took ten minutes to get our food but everything was hot and fresh. We didn't order hamburgers. I ordered their chicken tenders with poutine. My guy ordered the crispy chicken. I was even asked what kind of dipping sauce i wanted for my chicken strips. Wow...the poutine was good and steaming hot, just like my chicken  fingers. Good job. Great service. Thank you.

Harvey’s Just Introduced Something Weird and Wonderful

Harvey’s… They’re not exactly the poster child for health or the cash cow of fast food chains, but they are underrated when it comes to quick and casual dining. Point and case, the kind of weird and kind of wonderful recently introduced build-a-bowls that they hope will appease your fast food cravings while remaining semi-healthy (if you choose so).

It sounds mysterious. It sounds intriguing. What is this so-called “bowl”?

Shredded burgers come to mind or perhaps an off-skew rebranding into the realm of quinoa-veggie filled bowls so many Toronto restaurants are pushing these days. While it’s kind of like that, it still sticks to Harvey’s fast food roots and includes all the things you love about burgers in a bowl. But you’re probably wondering where the semi-heathy option comes into play, right? That’s totally up to you because Harvey’s Build-a-Bowls are completely customizable and bunless or shall we be fancy and say gluten-free.

The process works like this:

  1. Build a base of either rice, lettuce or fries (yes, you heard right! Fries.)
  2. Add your protein of either chicken (crispy, grilled, or buffalo) or burger (original, Angus, or veggie); diced into bite sized pieces or not – it’s up to you!
  3. Add your extras from a choice of 21 different toppings including nine new toppings like guacamole (and no, it’s not extra!), corn and black beans, and sweet chili Thai sauce

Like we said before, your bowl can go either way. It can be a health-conscious bowl or it can be completely gluttonous and loaded with fried food, salty meat and all the toppings ’cause sometimes you just gotta live your life and know that tomorrow’s a new day but right now you want to consume 2,000 calories in 15 minutes, go into a food coma and forget about it. Sometimes those days are necessary and Harvey’s is here to help with whatever you’re craving.

So next time you get an impulse for fast food, stop by a Harvey’s and create your bowl. Healthy or not, it’s quick, easy, and pretty damn tasty. We can attest to that as we tried one ourselves and ate the entire bowl, down to the very last crumb.

Oke Poke

December 9, 2016

A wild contender appears! Ladies and gentlemen, a new rivalry has formed in ye olde Claremont. A poke place called Oke Poke is set to go toe-to-toe with Poke Dot, and the competition shall be fierce, fiery, and delicious. I can’t stress it enough, the likes of this rivalry is witnessed but a handful of occasions a lifetime. This encounter brings to mind Yankees/Red Sox, Zeus/Hades, and Harry Potter/Voldemort, among others, though the intensity here is sure to raise the game to a whole new level. Bringing you only the highest quality investigative journalism, in this blog I share with you my first experience harveys bowl toppings Oke Poke. (If you don’t know what poke is, take a moment to reflect on your life and how you ended up in such a predicament, and then catch up by reading my other poke blog!)

Tucked away in a cute shopping center close to campus, Oke Poke’s site differs greatly from Poke Dot’s bustling location in the center of town. Like any poke place however, harveys bowl toppings, they’re all laid out very similarly, with a bar you shuffle along to order your food. I, personally, shuffled along this bar and had a custom poke bowl made. I got a bowl with a plain white rice base, 2 scoops of salmon, and 1 of tuna. Toppings included seaweed salad, cucumber, avocado, and onion, among others, harveys bowl toppings. I also got the house sauce, and it was on fleek (I hear that’s what the kids are harveys bowl toppings it these days).

The staff were amiable and the food was excellent. I have yet to get Oke Poke vetted by my Hawaiian roommate aka poke expert (again, harveys bowl toppings, see previous blog for details), but upon first impression there are no glaring differences in quality between Oke Poke and Poke Dot. At this point, it comes down to personal preference. Oke Poke doesn’t mix all the toppings in with the sauce, while Poke Dot does. Oke Poke offers more selection in general and is slightly more generous with toppings, but Poke Dot seems to have their process more streamlined and is more generous with the rice base- it’s a give and take. Also, Oke Poke is about a dollar cheaper for the standard three scoop bowl. So, as of yet, no conclusions. Like a good scientist, I’m going to get more delicious data to analyze. Tune in later for more Poke (and I guess Harvey Mudd College?) related blogs.

  3. Add your extras from a choice of harveys bowl toppings different toppings including nine new toppings like guacamole (and no, it’s not extra!), corn and black beans, and sweet chili Thai sauce

Healthy or not, it’s quick, harveys bowl toppings, easy, and pretty damn tasty. We can attest to that as we tried one ourselves and ate the entire bowl, down to the very last crumb.
