APTOS — Aptos High’s recent turnover of girls volleyball coaches is over, Hunter Zeng promises.

The 23-year-old was recently hired as an off-campus coach for the Mariners. He has already held a pair of tryouts which drew 35 athletes poised to showcase their skills.

“I’m incredibly excited,” said Zeng, who also coaches at Main Beach Volleyball Club. “The girls are all phenomenal. The program is going to be strong. I’m over the moon to be coaching Aptos.”

Zeng is the Mariners’ fourth coach since early 2020, when Lake Merchen stepped down after leading the Mariners to the ’19 CIF State Division IV Championship. Neither of the ensuing hires, Jerry Woodward followed by Madi Dueck, ever stepped foot on the hardwood due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both ended up relocating to San Diego.

“Hunter is a smart kid,” said Travis Fox, the Mariners’ athletics director. “He knows the game really well. He has such a positive approach to the game. He has hit the ground running.”

Zeng moved to Santa Cruz after graduating at UC San Diego. He served as treasurer and later president of the Tritons’ volleyball club team, where he played libero and outside hitter during his three-year tenure.

He also played volleyball three seasons at Washington High in Fremont.

Zeng’s time spent with Main Beach has helped familiarize himself with some of the area’s top players, including a trio of returning Mariners: Emma Yeaman, Eve Willis and Jordyn Waite-Ward, who will miss this season as she recovers from an ACL injury.

“I know this program has had success,” Zeng said. “I want to set up a dynasty. I’m here to stay.”

Zeng was hired as Soquel’s boys coach last spring, but the Knights’ season was canceled after an insufficient turnout during the pandemic. He has since resigned from that position.

He plans to rely heavily on his team leaders at Aptos and give the girls a vested interest in seeing the program flourish.

Zeng also plans to utilize his background in cognitive science to create user-friendly experiences with volleyball coaching and skill development, focusing on movement mechanics, strength, flexibility, and game sense.

“We’re really happy with Hunter,” Fox said. “He brings a lot of energy and positive philosophies. He’ll keep the program rolling, so we won’t miss a beat.”

Fox said Zeng produced a great list of references to vouch for his talents. He also gives private volleyball lessons locally for clients of all ages and skill levels.

“He has a very mature approach to coaching,” Fox said. “There’s a confident approach to his style and I think the kids can sense that.”

OK, so, this bunch of unruly 15 year-olds, what shall we call them. .goofballs? These 'goofballs', this weekend, earned a bid to compete in the USA Volleyball Boys Junior National Championship!! (https://www.teamusa.org/…/…/27/bjnc-2020), by finishing 3rd in the West Coast Far Western Bid Tournament, in San Mateo. And this is what that looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch…. They will be part of a select group of 36 teams from all over the US, to compete for the title in the 'USA' division. This is just one division below the top-level 'Open' division, also called Junior Olympics. So, even if they would loose all their games (which they won't), they would finish #72 of all 16s club teams in the United States. Quite an achievement for a small coastal town which has less than 0.01% of the overall population!!! More importantly, quite an achievement for a bunch of boys we really care about! (#proudparent) Go Main Beach Volleyball Club (https://www.facebook.com/MainBeachVolleyball/) Congratulations Main Beach 16s Blue! P.S. The Main Beach 18s also made it to the Nationals, by finishing 2nd in the Far Western Bid tournament!! So, overall an amazing achievement for Main Beach Volleyball Club #MainBeachVolleyballClub @MainBeachVolleyballClubSee more
