Districts more relevant in new VHSL postseason formats

WINCHESTER — Postseason importance has returned to Northwestern District and Bull Run District competition.
While the Virginia High School League touted a potential “all-in” vw golf noise on startup tournament format when it voted to eliminate conferences last year, the organization did allow each of the 24 regions (six classifications of four regions each) to decide how to organize their postseason tournaments and meets.
Class 4, Region C (which includes Handley, James Wood, Millbrook and Sherando and is made up of seven Northwestern District schools and seven Dulles District schools) and Class 2, Region B (which includes Clarke County and is made up of five Bull Run District schools and seven Shenandoah District schools) have both elected to not let all of its members automatically qualify for region competition.
Those regions decided to make their schools earn their way into the region tournament.
That means for the Northwestern and Bull Run districts, every time one of their schools plays a district game against a school in a similar classification in the regular season, it will impact their seeding for the district tournament that starts the postseason.
In that respect, things are going to be similar to the way they were before the conference era began in
In the new format, in sports other than football, the top two teams from the Northwestern District and Dulles Vhsl softball conference tournaments will qualify vhsl softball conference tournaments the Class 4, Region C tournament.
In the team sports of basketball, baseball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball, every team in the Northwestern District will play each other twice — once at home, once on the road — and the standings from the results of those games will determine postseason seeding. The regular season champion will earn an automatic berth into the region tournament, as well as the district tournament champion (or the district tournament runner-up if the district regular season champion won the district tournament). The tournament champion will get the higher region seed of the two qualifiers.
The Northwestern District now has 13 schools — Class 4 schools Handley, James Wood, Millbrook, Sherando, Fauquier, Kettle Run and Liberty, and Class 3 schools Brentsville, Culpeper, Manassas Park, William Monroe, Skyline and Warren County. Games against schools that are not in your classification will not count toward the district standings in any sport.
James Wood coordinator of student activities Craig Woshner said the “all-in” region tournament format didn’t have much appeal with Class 4, Region C athletic directors.
“There’s something that gets missed when you have an all-in tournament,” Woshner said. “We feel as ADs, [appearing in the region tournament] is something that is earned.
“When you go to regionals, and you’re automatically in, it really doesn’t mean anything. Teams haven’t earned any kind of advancement. Especially as big as our district is, we felt we could go back to the advancement kind of like we did prior to the conference change. We think it’s going to work out really well, the way we’ve got it set up.”
Millbrook CSA Scott Mankins said there were a lot of discussions about using an all-in format in Class 4, Region C, and the region ADs even came up with a bracket playoff system for that format.
“There’s pluses and minuses to each way, but I’m satisfied with the way that we’ve come up with,” Mankins said.
The top four Class 2, Region B teams (which will be known as Region 2B) from the Bull Run District and Shenandoah District will make the region tournament. The other schools from the Bull Run District that are in Class 2 are Central, George Mason, Madison County and Strasburg.
Just like the Northwestern District, in the team sports of basketball, baseball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball, every team in the Bull Run District will play each other twice — once at home, once on the road — and the standings from the results of those games will determine postseason seeding.
Rappahannock County is another member of the Bull Run District. The Panthers will compete in Class 1 vhsl softball conference tournaments the regional and state level for all sports vhsl softball conference tournaments girls’ soccer, a sport in which Class 2 and 1 are combined.
Rappahannock County will compete in the Bull Run District postseason tournaments and meets for all sports in which it sponsors teams though.
In team sports, the four tournament semifinalists will make the region tournament if they’re all from Class 2. But if a team from Rappahannock County makes the semifinals, then the highest-seeded Class 2 team that was eliminated in the first round will move on to the region tournament.
The same principle applies vhsl softball conference tournaments individual sports. For example, in track, it’s the top six Class 2 people in each event that will sports physio richmond to the region meet, vhsl softball conference tournaments. So if someone from Clarke County finished seventh, that athlete could still be moving on if one of the finishers ahead of them is from Rappahannock County.
Clarke County director of athletics Casey Childs vhsl softball conference tournaments it made more sense to the athletic directors in Class 2, Region B to not let all the teams into its region tournament, because it would have been difficult to seed them appropriately since the Shenandoah District has two more schools than the Bull Run does in the region.
The Shenandoah District also has two Class maska do biegania decathlon schools that factor into its regular season scheduling.
“We’re not going to be able to play one another [in the regular season], because the Shenandoah District is so big that their out-of-district schedule is going to be so small,” Childs said. “You really can’t get a true measure of who should be seeded vhsl softball conference tournaments because of that, so the only fair way to do it is take our top four and their top four and play.”
For all classifications, in football, the four region champions will play in the state semifinals. In the team sports of baseball, basketball softball, soccer, tennis and volleyball, the region finalists will advance to an eight-team state bracket.
In individual sports, for the most part, the VHSL is advancing the same number of teams and individuals to state competition as it did last year. The only reason why there are fewer teams advancing to state per region in golf and cross country is because there are more regions (four in each classification instead of two in each classification in the conference era).

William Byrd celebrates with the VHSL state softball championship trophy after defeating Woodgrove for the Class 4 title. No state softball tournament was held in due to the COVID pandemic.

The Virginia High School League is close to finalizing a structure for postseason play for its fall, winter and spring sports seasons that have been smacked down and pushed back by COVID

VHSL executive director Billy Haun would like everyone to remember one thing:

“Normal doesn’t exist anymore.”

Haun made that statement Monday during a video conference that included VHSL staff and 30 members of the league’s Executive Committee.

The VHSL chief presented a proposed athletics postseason calendar for the school year, setting potential dates for region and state competition that Haun is labeling “Championship Plus One.”

The Executive Committee — which is composed primarily of school superintendents, principals and athletic directors from across the state — is expected powell wyoming football finalize a postseason schedule during a meeting Sept. 3.

Pending any potential changes, several items Monday were noteworthy:

People are also reading…

  • Football teams would have seven “weeks” to play six games, with the first game allowed on Monday, Feb. 22, followed by a second date in the opening week on Saturday, Feb.
  • Football would be allowed two weekends for vhsl softball conference tournaments playoffs, followed by a state semifinal April 24 and a state final May 1.
  • For all team sports other than football, only one team per region would qualify for a state tournament, and the semifinals and finals in some sports would be played at the home site of bowl reversing jaws of the participating teams if the venue meets VHSL requirements.
  • Boys and girls basketball would begin Dec. 21 instead of Dec. 28 with the original restricted limit of 14 regular-season games imposed by the VHSL in July still in effect.
  • Any team not qualifying for a regional tournament in any sport could play an “extra” postseason game against another regional non-qualifier.
  • The criteria for qualifying for regional postseason play in team sports — including football — would be determined by each region.
  • State wrestling tournaments would be limited to eight qualifiers in each weight class and each tournament would be a one-day event.
  • Qualifying standards would not be used for outdoor track and field, indoor track and swimming. State meet qualifiers would be limited to the top four regional individual finishers in swimming and outdoor track, and the top three finishers in indoor track.
  • District tournaments would be allowed and would not count against a sport’s contest limit.
  • Holding a “virtual” state swim meet has been discussed vhsl softball conference tournaments some coaches and administrators.
  • The number of people allowed at any venue, including spectators, would be limited by Virginia’s current Phase III recovery plan from the coronavirus, which currently vhsl softball conference tournaments a cap of no more than people.

Haun said he plans to lobby Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and the Virginia Department of Health to have more spectators allowed at indoor and outdoor events, regular-season and postseason.

“Once I get some more details, I’m going to set up a meeting with the governor’s office and the [VDH], and I’m going to recommend, ask, push — all three of those words — at minimum we’d be allowed to have a thousand because that’s what the guidelines say for recreation events,” Haun said.

“My first request is going to be 50%[capacity] of the venue that’s hosting the event with social distancing requirements being enforced by our schools. If I get denied there, my second request would be to go to the [1,].

“Then I guess at that point, we’d fall back to ”

Haun said he expects to get plenty of feedback on his proposal to allow some state semifinals and championship games to be played at the site of one of the participants, determined by the VHSL tournament bracket.

The VHSL still hopes to hold its football championship games at its regularly scheduled sites such as Liberty University and Salem Stadium, and it hopes to play its basketball championship games at VCU’s Siegel Center, if those facilities are available.

However, there would be no spring “jubilees” for baseball, vhsl softball conference tournaments, lacrosse, soccer and tennis in

With jubilee facilities out of the picture, Haun wants to minimize the chances of using a “third-party” neutral site because of health concerns.

“I know there will be some people and coaches concerned with this one,” Haun said. “They won’t see it as a fair issue to play at the site of the ‘home’ team … but with all the things we have to do to be safe and worry about COVID … people may not be willing to bring in teams that aren’t their own into their facility because of all the extra safety things required.

“So this year we’re recommending that state championships be hosted by teams at the top of the bracket.”

Athletic directors and coaches now must create limited schedules based on the number of regular-season events permitted: basketball (14); volleyball, baseball and softball (12); soccer, tennis and field hockey (10); lacrosse and outdoor track (9); golf and wrestling (8); football, cross country, swimming and indoor track (6); and competition cheer (3).

“People are going to have to pare down their schedules,” Haun said. “So the question comes up, ‘Who do I play? Who do I not play?’ We would like to give that autonomy to the district and the regions.”

However, executive committee member Tammy Newcome, the principal at William Byrd High School, cited a problematic example.

Byrd is a member of the six-team Blue Ridge District, but if the Terriers are required to play Roanoke County rivals Cave Spring and Hidden Valley, who gets dropped from a six-game football schedule or a game volleyball slate?

Haun said all “district decisions relative to scheduling must require the unanimous approval of the district.”

“If districts cannot unanimously approve a district schedule, vhsl softball conference tournaments, then I’m suggesting maybe the executive committee would say you would play the last six games on your schedule and that would be your district schedule.

“What we can’t have is a team that gets disadvantaged in the scheduling and they can’t get the number of games they need. There were concerns about people not being able to get a district schedule that was fair.”

The VHSL also is concerned about the availability of officials in some parts of the state.

Haun said two-man basketball officiating crews and four-man crews in football are vhsl softball conference tournaments real possibility.

“It’s going to be a question mark across the board, across Virginia,” Haun said. “It’s going to be a challenge. There’s absolutely no question about it.”

Vhsl softball conference tournaments - exact

Districts more relevant in new VHSL postseason formats

WINCHESTER — Postseason importance has returned to Northwestern District and Bull Run District competition.
While the Virginia High School League touted a potential “all-in” region tournament format when it voted to eliminate conferences last year, the organization did allow each of the 24 regions (six classifications of four regions each) to decide how to organize their postseason tournaments and meets.
In that respect, things are going to be similar to the way they were before the conference era began in
In the new format, in sports other than football, the top two teams from the Northwestern District and Dulles District will qualify for the Class 4, Region C tournament.
The Panthers will compete in Class 1 at the regional and state level for all sports except girls’ soccer, a sport in which Class 2 and 1 are combined.
The same principle applies to individual sports. For example, in track, it’s the top six Class 2 people in each event that will advance to the region meet. So if someone from Clarke County finished seventh, that athlete could still be moving on if one of the finishers ahead of them is from Rappahannock County.
Clarke County director of athletics Casey Childs said it made more sense to the athletic directors in Class 2, Region B to not let all the teams into its region tournament, because it would have been difficult to seed them appropriately since the Shenandoah District has two more schools than the Bull Run does in the region.
The Shenandoah District also has two Class 1 schools that factor into its regular season scheduling.
“We’re not going to be able to play one another [in the regular season], because the Shenandoah District is so big that their out-of-district schedule is going to be so small,” Childs said. “You really can’t get a true measure of who should be seeded where because of that, so the only fair way to do it is take our top four and their top four and play.”

  1. Brilliant video, thanks for the guidance! I've been doing this twice a week for 4/5 weeks and it was certainly helpful for some time but for the last 7-10 it's been too sore to continue despite precautions & limiting movement. Would you have any recommendations - should I perhaps begin strengthening (given that there is no inflammation)? Thanks again

  2. Perfect 💯 this video is a big thumbs up 👍.. Too helpful content🤗. That's what I was in search 🔍of @Beebom thankyou
