High School Football Norwalk added to 2022 Alliance schedule

A Norwalk football player, left, goes for a tackle during a game last season at Mansfield Sr.

Alliance has added a former state playoff champion to the 2022 football schedule.

The Norwalk Truckers, who defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 27-17 in the 1974 Class AA  title game, and the Aviators have agreed to a one-year deal, with the 2022 game to be held at Mount Union Stadium.

"We needed a fourth game and we wanted it to be a home game," Alliance athletic director Mike Schott said. "It was a good fit."

Norwalk, which is located in Huron County in northwestern Ohio, also is a good fit, enrollment-wise.

"They're a Division III school, just like we are," Alliance head coach Tim Goodman said. "They also play in a good conference and play excellent competition."

Norwalk and Stark County, specifically Massillon, also have a head coaching connection.

"Norwalk is the birthplace of Paul Brown, the great legendary coach," Norwalk head coach Todd Fox said.

Brown, of course, was a Hall of Fame coach at Massillon, Ohio State and in the NFL. His first stop was at Massillon, where he posted an 80-8-2 record in nine years (1932-40). His first quarterback was Mel Knowlton, who eventually carved his own legendary head coaching career at Alliance (1946-69).

"I don't know much about the [Alliance] football team, but I know about the football in that part of the state," Fox said. "I had some friends from West Branch and heard about their great head coach [Jim Laut]. They have tough kids that play in that area."

While Alliance may be an unknown opponent, Mount Union Stadium is familiar to Fox, who played college football at Baldwin-Wallace from 1991-94, a time when the Purple Raiders were rising toward Division III national prominence.

"Mount Union Stadium has a great facility," Fox said. "Back then, we competed with them. We went 2-2 against them in my four years and I was on the last Baldwin-Wallace team that beat them back in 1994."

Fox, a Willard native, completed his fourth season as Norwalk head coach. The Truckers, who compete in the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division, also faced Columbus Hartley and Mansfield (Division III) and Olmsted Falls (Division II) in non-conference games. The Truckers posted a 1-9 record last season but return several players.

"We were competitive, but things didn't bounce our way," Fox said. "The biggest problem we had was closing out games."

While the Truckers struggled to win last season, Fox's first three teams were successful. After succeeding Chris McFarland as head coach in 2018, Fox guided Norwalk to a 10-4 record and a state semifinal berth. The Truckers lost to the Kettering Alter 34-13 in a state semifinal. Alter eventually finished Division III state runner-up, losing decisively to Kenston in the 2018 playoff final.

In 2019, the same year Alliance won its second straight Eastern Buckeye Conference title and lost to two-time reigning Division II state playoff champion Akron Hoban in the first round of the playoffs, Norwalk posted a 9-3 record, defeating Cleveland Glenville 22-2 in the regional quarterfinals before losing 31-15 to conference rival Sandusky in the regional semifinals.

During the COVID-impacted 2020 season, Norwalk posted a 5-4 record, which included a 1-1 postseason tournament mark. The win was 17-10 over Copley, Goodman's high school alma mater. Norwalk's postseason tournament run ended after a 21-7 setback to Ashland.

"We've had success and we're like most high school football teams on offense," Fox said. "We'll line up in the shotgun some, but I've kind of evolved back to the old style of being more under center."

Whatever offense Norwalk plays, Fox is happy to get the chance to add another solid non-conference opponent to the schedule.

"We played Hartley and we enjoy facing Mansfield and Olmsted Falls," he added. "I like playing good teams and I've heard Alliance should have a good team next year."
