Dean Refram

American golfer and golf course architect

Dean Refram (November 8, 1936 – July 28, 1991) was an Americanprofessional golfer and golf course architect.

Refram was born in Miami, Florida.[1] He attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida, and was a member of the golf team.[2]

Refram played on the PGA Tour in the 1960s and 1970s. He won twice on tour: the 1968 Robinson Open and the 1975 Walt Disney World National Team Championship with Jim Colbert.[3]

After leaving the Tour in 1975, Refram spent the latter part of his career as a golf course designer and architect.[3] Most of the courses he designed were in Florida.[4]

Refram died in Tampa, Florida at age 54 of respiratory problems complicated by cancer.[1][3] His son, Dean Refram Jr., also is a professional golfer.

Dean's golf career spans back more than 40 years from his first job working at Naperville Country Club in Illinois. Starting out as a caddie, Dean worked his way up through the ranks by serving as a groundskeeper, working in the bag room and then in the pro shop. Soon after, Dean became a 1st assistant professional at Midlothian Country Club. These various positions enabled Dean to learn all aspects of the business of golf while fine-tuning his playing skills. He credits these experiences with setting the groundwork for what has evolved into a very successfulgolf academy.
