The importance of a quality warm-up routine increases even more, when the temperatures start dropping much more like in summer. Although it is just the start of the training and players want to have a chat with their buddies, it’s also a crucial part of the training session.The athletes should be focused by no later than the second warm up lap. Due to the low temperatures, players are much more injury-prone in winter. Cold tendons, ligaments and muscles are not nearly as reliable as after a quality warm up.

Consequently a moderate running program is the best way to start your cold weather practice. Soccer balls can be added to the running to raise the player’s awareness – But careful – Balls will always be a big temptation to shoot and pass around, which is an invitation for injuries to muscles and tendons. The warm up should be increasingly dynamic and it doesn’t matter if takes five minutes longer than usual.

The given field conditions should also be decisive for your exercise planning – e.g you shouldn’t practice diving headers with ground frost on the pitch. The same goes for exercises which need long explanations. Save them for warmer days! Players need to stay active throughout the training to prevent hypothermia. When it comes to the intensity, high strains involving great numbers of interval run, should be avoided as well. The following applies – the lower the temperatures, the more consistent and uniformly the intensity of strains in training should be. It prevents the players from reaching excessive breathing frequencies that increase the risk of side effects when training through cold weather. Please pay attention to individual differences in player performance and take health problems, like aching throats, seriously.

Once the session is successfully completed, dangers of low temperatures persists with sweaty sport clothing. Take off wet clothes, take a warm shower and put on dry clothes! It is particularly crucial, because the body temperature decreases after practice and increases the sensitivity of the immune system. The same applies to the common immediate drive home in the supposedly warm car.

Important tip at the end. Players suffering from a flu or are still recovering from it, should not be allowed to practice until they made a full recovery. The high stress for the cardiovascular system during soccer training in winter, increases even further during or shortly after a flu. Rather give a day longer to rest in order to avoid myocarditis inflammation and risk the long-term health.

The Knoxville Football Club “Crush” is happy to announce their Winter Training Program for the Winter of 2012/13. The program is based around technical training, speed and agility training, and will incorporate an in house 3v3/4v4 league.With the mixture of all these facets of the game in an intense, yet enjoyable environment, the “Crush” feel that their players, teams, and coaches will benefit from the off-season months.Winter training isoptional, yet we feel that it will attract each of our players to continue to work over the off-season. The training program will begin the week of December 3rd and run through January 25th. This six week program (taking the week of December 24th and December 31st off for the Holiday Season) will provide our players with the correct balance of training and playing, while maintaining and preparing them for the Spring season.

Training:
The training will be Tuesdays at Rocky Hill Baseball Park, and Thursdays at Hickory Creek, from 6:00-7:30. This will be a club-wide training environment that will be heavily focused upon technical work, while getting in some much needed speed, agility, core strength, and balance training. Each and every player is encouraged to participate, no matter what age, gender, or level.

In an effort to continue to provide our players and families the most for less, the Winter Training on Tuesday and Thursday nights is free. This is included in the club fees that each player pays each season to be a part of the Knoxville Football Club. We encourage each player to take advantage of these two nights.

Indoor League:
The Winter Training Program takes on a new facet this year by adding in an Indoor League at the Emerald Youth Foundation Gym. This will be 3v3 or 4v4 (depending on age, with no goalkeepers) inside the gym, where the touches on the ball will be maximized and giving each player lots of playing time. We are looking to break these leagues into two groups: u9-u12 on Friday Nights and u13 and above on Monday nights. Each night will be broken down accordingly so that the players get the most out of their time.

The League will cost $25 a player for 6 weeks, as this money will go to help cover the costs of the facility rental. Each player will receive two t-shirts for playing (for their games, a home and away) and the rest of the money will go to cover costs.

Thegames be 25 minutes long, and have the teams consist of 1-2 subs so that the playing time is maximized. There will be two games per team each night that the team plays so that we are able to give our families the most for their time.  If interested in participating in the indoor league, please register here.

PFC Technical Winter Training

Our Technical Training Academy is a specifically designed program for player who are looking to seriously develop their individual technical skills. This program will give players the chance to spend an hour each week working with our highly qualified team of instructors in an environment which focuses exclusively on individual player development. Over the coming months, many coaches will brave winter conditions to deliver coaching sessions to young players. Here, FA regional coach development manager, Martin Dighton, provides ten top tips to help fully engage with players when working outdoors.

1) Young children are not mini-versions of adults

As much as they will be adults one day, the young players in your care are certainly not there yet. We must understand and recognise that we can’t treat them in the same way as we would our peers.  We must always have the well-being of each of the children in our care as the priority. The session must fully engage the young players no matter what the weather.

2) Get the players moving as soon as they arrive

In poor weather keeping the players busy is vital. Young children will go cold quickly – almost without noticing –  and once they are cold they will really struggle to warm up again. Telling them to run around a bit more won’t help either unfortunately – it’s too late by then.

An arrival activity is vital. The children should arrive warm and getting them active early is crucial.  Little games of tag, mini 1v1s or 2v2s, and small fundamental movement games will all do this. Make sure you have this section in your session plan ready to go whatever the weather.

3) No queues and keep all the players involved

Having queues of children waiting for their turn is a big no-no in any session let alone on a cold, wet day.  Can you find ways to make sure all the players are all involved all of the time?  If you are struggling for equipment could you set up two or three smaller areas rather than one in order to cut down any form of waiting?

4) Use games during training

Consider what the players expect football to look like. What’s the first question they ask:  ‘When are we playing a match?’  Wet and cold sessions are perfect for match time as it keeps them all involved and active. Play mini 3v3s on a couple of pitches to keep all involved and then carefully manage how you intervene to coach.

5) Work with individuals rather than stopping the whole group

Children don’t like coaches talking for ages at the best of times but on a wet day it’s even more important to keep communication concise. Can you coach individuals whilst the game plays on around them?  Could you give quick challenges to players ‘on the fly’ as they pass you?  Could you set yourself a challenge to intervene for no longer than 30 seconds?  The kids would really appreciate this.

6) Consider practice design and progression

Spend time on planning the session. Will you use a technique-skill-game format or whole-part-whole or a myriad of other templates?  Which will increase playing time the most and which may lead to times of relative inactivity?  How can you create excitement and therefore engagement?  Can you always have a scoring system in place? Can you ensure that if any defender wins the ball they have a way to attack and score too to keep games flowing?

How you progress the session needs to be thought about too.  Can you progress some players without stopping all of them at the same time?  Think about working the session with players in groups; perhaps advance the better players first before gradually progressing the weaker players later on, meaning that they’ll get the extra practice time they need.  This also means that as you talk to each group two-thirds of your team are still active and warm.

7) If in doubt: play matches

If you’re ever in doubt or get caught by the rain or bad weather half-way through a session revert back to several small matches.  Smaller sized matches promote ball contacts, in and out of possession play, transition and game craft. They also ensure that players are never more than one pass away from the ball, so engagement and activity levels stay high.

8) Have some rules about correct kit

It’s important to have some rules or conditions regarding kit. I’ve had children arriving in t-shirt and shorts to sessions in December and I’ve had to take the hard decision to turn them away. Parents sometimes feel that it’s okay because they’ll be running around at football – yes, but they will only be warm if they start warm in the first place. Perhaps having a club wet-weather policy would be a good idea?

We can take note from cricketers playing in early April or late September. They wear lots of thin layers rather than a couple of large ones to keep heat in.  Encourage your players to do the same. It’s nothing different to what my mum used to shout as I ran off to training:  “You can always take some off, if you get too hot”.

9) Safety and welfare are top priority, but each individual is different

We have a responsibility to the children and their parents to look after them and always to make decisions in their best interests.  Safety and welfare are the top priority but we also mustn’t shy away from playing just because the weather isn’t great.

In a grassroots setting I worked in previously we had a rule – if the kids turned up then we would play. It was the choice of the group and their parents if we played.  This meant that sometimes we played for just 30 minutes instead of the full hour, sometimes the session plan went out of the window and we just played little games and sometimes we led sessions with only three or four kids.

What we must always understand is that every child is different, some will love and thrive in the terrible weather whereas others will hate it. Either way, they are both likely to remember it for a life time.

We must make certain that our coaching fosters a love of the game and a love of playing it. Make sure that when you are next faced with bad weather you make decisions and plans based on the best interests of the little people that turn up each week to play the great game of football with you.

10) Find a way to use the weather to create memories

Some of my fondest experiences as a kid were playing outside in terrible weather.  I still remember my first game in snow and the excitement playing with an orange ball for the first time gave us, the sliding tackles that seemed to last a full 30 yards through the midfield mud-pit and the diving headers that gave such a splash landing that if you timed it well could soak the watching parents.

We must appreciate that we could be building memories for our players; let’s make sure they are positive ones where the kids can’t wait to play the next time it rains. Starting to implement all of the above is a good foundation to start from.

SIA ACADEMY WINTER CAMP AND TRAINING CAMPS

The winter months are approaching and the international football school Soccer Inter-Action is getting down to work. The famous SIA Academy winter camp is ready to welcome the future professional football players in Spain. These are the activities of the 2021 winter football camps.

High Performance Football Camp

The SIA Academy high performance football centre is hosting the 2021 winter football camp. A few days of learning and coexistence for boys and girls who want to develop and become professional football players in Spain. 

Two types of winter camps

The first is the football camp where they train just like the high performance academy. Players between 12 and 22 years old would start the winter football camp on 22 December and finish on 9 January 2022

On the other hand, the intensive 2021 winter football camp will start on 23 December 2021 and end on 7 January 2022. Players of all ages are welcome at this 2021 football camp.

Subsequently, they will be divided by age and football level. In addition, during these dates there is the possibility of training with our Third Division team, UD SIA Benigànim. These training sessions will take place in the same facilities as where the campus is held.

What is campus planning?

At the high performance winter camp, the day is filled with football at the international football school Soccer Inter-Action. At 9:00 a.m. the technical activation starts and at 20:30 p.m. the day ends with a group dinner. In between, shooting sessions, video analysis, nutrition and psychology workshops, English lessons, training and leisure activities.

On the other hand, the planning of the intensive winter camp at SIA Academy starts at 9:00 a.m. with the technical activation and ends at 13:30 p.m. with the group lunch. In addition, the Spanish football school Soccer Inter-Action offers activities for Christmas and New Year’s Day.

What is a winter football camp?

To learn more about the winter football camp run by the international football academy Soccer Inter-Action, it is necessary to know what a winter football camp is.

The given field conditions should also be decisive for your exercise planning – e.g you shouldn’t practice diving headers with ground frost on the pitch. The same goes for exercises which need long explanations. Save them football training in winter warmer days! Players need to stay active throughout the training to prevent hypothermia, football training in winter. When it comes to the intensity, high strains involving great numbers of interval run, should be avoided as well. The following applies – the lower the temperatures, the more consistent and uniformly the intensity of strains in training should be. It prevents the players from reaching excessive breathing frequencies that increase the risk of side effects when training through cold weather. Please pay attention to individual differences in player performance and take health problems, like aching throats, seriously.

Once the session is successfully completed, dangers of low temperatures persists with sweaty sport clothing. Take off wet clothes, take a warm shower and put on dry clothes! It is particularly crucial, because the body temperature decreases after practice and increases the sensitivity of the immune system, football training in winter. The same applies to the common immediate drive home in the supposedly warm car.

Important tip at the end. Players suffering from a flu or are still recovering from it, should not be allowed to practice until they made a full recovery. The high stress for the cardiovascular system during soccer training in winter, increases even further during or shortly after a flu. Rather give a day longer to rest in order to avoid myocarditis inflammation and risk the long-term health.

It’s also worth mentioning that, because the goal posts are placed directly above the end zones, a missed field goal may give the special teams an opportunity to take the ball and return it for a touchdown, football training in winter. These differences in rules and play increase the running demands in Canadian football, and we need to take them into football training in winter when planning the off-season program. One research study, for example, found the total distance traveled during a game by non-linemen (WR, DB, LB) was about 4,141.3 meters.4 For pre-season practices, however, football training in winter, another study reported distances of only 2,573 ± 489 meters for these positions.2 We did our own research using GPS during eight games in the 2016 season and nine games in the 2017 season and found the WR and RB covered total distances of 6,321± 917 meters and 6,155 ± 509 meters, respectively.

With a better understanding of the demands of these positions, we had to adjust our training program so we could better prepare our student-athletes to meet the game’s requirements.

Preparing During the Winter Semester: Focusing on the Weight Room

The off-season program usually starts the first week of January when the players get back on campus. At this time of the year, there are about 90-100 players on the team. The first week has very few training activities scheduled since players meet with their coaches for team meetings and attend class. For some recruits, the first week can be a little stressful as they transition from CEGEP to university. From an athletic development perspective, it’s a perfect opportunity to introduce the philosophy and goals of the training program and perform any movement screening. Training usually resumes during the second week of January.

While I was Head Strength & Conditioning coach for a Canadian university football team, we divided winter training into four 3-week cycles. The first two 3-week cycles introduced the student-athletes to the philosophy behind the athletic development program and the different exercises they would perform. We also made sure that they executed the exercises properly.

The main training themes for the winter semester, right before the training camp, were:

  1. Teaching and mastering the basic movements and understanding the terminology used
  2. Progressively increasing training volume in the weight room

On the track, we began by focusing on proper running mechanics and postures and working on starts and accelerations using a short-to-long approach. Training was also needed to prepare the athletes for the increased demands of the winter training camp, which usually took place only weeks later during March break.

Annual Training Plan


A training week during the winter semester was divided into four weight training sessions and two running sessions on the track. Student-athletes trained in the weight room on Monday. On Tuesday, they had two training sessions, one on the track and another in the weight room. They got Wednesday off to perform technical work with their position coach or participated stream nba basketball reddit active recovery (stretching, pool, stationary bike). We repeated the same pattern for Thursday and Friday, with the athletes having the option to perform the last weight training session on Friday or Saturday.

This last training session mostly focused on upper body muscle hypertrophy because college football rules involve more collisions than professional Canadian football teams; professional teams are contractually obliged to minimize the amount of contact per training week thus restricting practices to helmets only.

Weekly Training Schedule


After the winter training camp, the team benefited from a week football training in winter before resuming the last two 3-week cycles, which would lead football training in winter to the start of winter semester exams. The training themes during this time built on the previous training phases and prepared the players for the increased sprinting and football training in winter demands associated with summer training. Despite the need to prepare for these increased demands, the volume of sprinting on the track varied little, and overall volumes were kept quite low.

One of the challenges in Canadian university football during the winter is that we never know when we’ll have access to the outdoor football field because of the snow and cold temperatures. Also, football training in winter, increasing the sprinting distances and volumes on the track can lead to a lot of sore ankles, sore knees, and shin splints. During the exam period, we reduced the number of training activities so football training in winter could focus on school work.

Individualization for 100+ Athletes

At this point, training was in full swing with large groups of athletes training at the same time, football training in winter. Athletes performed various movements found in most athletic development programs for football, namely variations of the Olympic lifts like cleans and snatches, squats, lunges, presses, pulls, and various exercises targeting the core musculature.

Even though individualizing the training program to fit the needs of each athlete is an important principle, it’s virtually impossible to individualize the training for over 100 student-athletes when they do most activities in small groups. An interesting way to program training at this point is to use general exercise categories and allow the athlete and the football training in winter and conditioning coach to choose exercises based on the athlete’s needs. Examples include:

  • Movement-based strength exercises like various progressions of the hip lock using only body weight, elastic bands, or weight plates
  • Explosive lifts (classical Olympic lifts or variations like dumbbell or barbell jump shrug), jump squat, dumbbell snatches, and plyometrics
  • Bilateral exercises such as squats and deadlifts and variations including the Hex bar deadlift, barbell front squats, kettlebell squats, and Romanian deadlift
  • Single-leg lower body exercises like lunges, step-ups, football training in winter, single-leg squats, and single-leg deadlifts
  • Pushing exercises, including bench press, football training in winter, overhead press, and push-ups
  • Pulling exercises like chin-ups, inverted rows, and dumbbell rows
  • Core exercises such as various planks, Pallof press variations, landmine work, and medicine ball work

We chose exercises that best fit the goals of the session based on:

  • The athlete’s needs, training experience, position, and injury history
  • The theme of the current session
  • The requirements of that athlete’s position
  • What the athlete would do on the track the following day—exercise selection would be different if the focus of the running session was going to be on acceleration or change of direction
Training Sessions

A Few Words on Sprinting and Change of Direction

As mentioned previously, most of the training on the track during the winter semester focused on starts and accelerations. On Tuesday, we focused on linear starts and acceleration work. On Friday, the focus was on starts and acceleration again but from a multidirectional perspective. Rarely would we run sprints above 20 or 30 meters because of the indoor track.

Here is an example of a training session focused on linear acceleration during the 3-week cycle preceding winter training camp.

  • Exercise 1. Technique/Arm action—Big to small arm swings x 1-2 sets
  • Exercise 2. Technique/Posture—Marching A’s 1 x 2-4 x 10 meters
  • Exercise 3. Technique/Posture—Skipping A’s 1 x 4 x 20 meters
  • Exercise Technique/Posture—High knees 1 x 4 x 20 meters
  • Exercise 5. Acceleration 0-10 meters—Push-up starts 1 x 4 x 10 meters
  • Exercise 6. Acceleration 0-10 meters—Half-kneeling starts 1 x 4 x 10 meters
  • Exercise 7. Acceleration 0-20 meters—3-point starts 1 x 3 x 20 meters

When we felt the need to break the routine and provide a bit of novelty to the training, we booked the dancing studio where we could roll out the gymnastic mats. During those sessions, we performed various movements such as stick mobility exercises, a modified version of Josh Hingst’s barefoot jump rope routine, various plyometrics, and tumbling movements. We finished the training session with a “Competitive Coordination Game” à la Bill Knowles. We had these training sessions about once a month during the winter semester.

Conclusion

This article provides a glimpse of a Canadian university football team’s off-season training program. There are major differences between Canadian and American college football programs that we need to address when examining a Canadian sports banquet pictures training program. We also have to design a program around the different activities that make up the life of a student-athlete including the specific demands of the sport, human and financial resources, academic environment, and weather.
