The Merrill Bluejay Varsity Football Team battled it out with the Mosinee Indians last Friday night, Sept. 10, and they lost that battle, despite having the home field advantage.
“The Merrill Bluejays dropped a tough game at home to Mosinee this past Friday,” said Head Bluejay Varsity Football Coach Jason Wadzinski. “The Bluejays struggled to gain any traction on offense as well as to slow down Mosinee’s passing attack defensively.”
“Mosinee looks like a well-oiled machine, and their offensive line is particularly formidable. Bradyn Pieper (5 Tk, 1 Ast, 1 Int) was player of the game for the Bluejays, having one of the lone highlight moments with an interception in the endzone during the third quarter,” he said. “The Bluejays look to rebound and get back in the conference win column this coming Friday when Hayward comes to town.”

While they lost one battle, they won one of the war, this round anyway, in the ongoing rivalry with neighboring Antigo High School.
“The Merrill Bluejays have taken the ‘War on 64!’” Merrill Head Varsity Football Coach Jason Wadzinski was excited to announce after the Friday, Sept. 3 game in Antigo.
“After turning the ball over early twice and going down 12-0 to Antigo, the Merrill boys battled back,” he said. “Our Bluejays shut out the Red Robins the rest of the way, while compiling 15 unanswered points to defeat Antigo 15-12.”
“Senior Cayden Diels had two late interceptions to help seal the win. Cayden also had a receiving touchdown early in the 4th quarter,” Coach said. “Quarterback Brian Ball ran for one touchdown, as well.”
“Senior AJ Vogel led the Bluejays’ defensive attack, racking up six tackles, many of which came late in the game during pivotal moments,” Wadzinski said.
“I’m incredibly proud of the resilience and grit of this team,” he added. “There’s a lot of history, dislike and respect, between these two ball clubs. That makes a come-from-behind win on the road all the more special.”
“I couldn’t have written a better script for win number one of the 2021 season,” Wadzinski said.

Football: JV Remains Undefeated After Stomping Merrill 38-12 (9/9)

The Antigo Red Robin’s Junior Varsity football team moved to 3 – 0 on the season with a 38 – 12 victory over the Merrill Bluejays on Monday night at Jay Stadium in Merrill.

Antigo scored on the 1st possession of the game on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Zach Zupon to Casey Smith with 7:18 remaining in the 1st quarter to go up 8 – 0 after a successful 2-point conversion run.

Merrill would answer back on their 1st possession with a 10-yard TD run with 3:05 remaining in the 1st, however the 2-point conversion attempt was no good and Antigo would keep the lead at 8 – 6.

The Robins would strike once more before the end of the 1st quarter on a 1-yard TD run by Zupon to extend the lead to 16 – 6 after the 2-point conversion run by Nick Radish.

Antigo pushed the advantage to 24 – 6 with 3:43 remaining in the 2nd quarter on another Zupon touchdown run, this time from 3 yards out, and successful 2-point conversion pass from Zupon to Calvin Jansen.

The Bluejays answered right back on the kickoff, returning it 75 yards for a touchdown, the 2-point conversion attempt was no good and the Robins held a 24 – 12 advantage.

The Robins had their own answer though and as they did at the end of the 1st quarter, scored with just 8 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter.  This time it would be Radish crossing the goal line from 5 yards away, Isaac Kramer added the 2-point conversion and Antigo led 32 – 12 at halftime.

Neither team was able to generate much offense in the 3rd quarter and traded turnovers, an interception by the Robins and a fumble by the Bluejays.

Antigo would tack on one more score late in the 4th as Zupon scored his 3rd rushing TD of the day from 3 yards out giving the Robins a 38 – 12 advantage with just 1:19 remaining.

Casey Smith put the exclamation point on the victory with an interception of the Merrill QB with 1:02 remaining in the game allowing the Robins to run out the clock for the 38 – 12 victory.

The Antigo JV football team returns to action Monday, September 23rd when they travel to Lakeland to take on the Thunderbirds.  Kickoff is slated for 5:30.

The Bluejays have brought several state championships home to Merrill, including the 1964 state high school golf championship. The Merrill Bluejay wrestling team won the 1970 state championship. Whatever the sport and whatever the year, Merrill fans have always supported and been proud of their Bluejays!

The Rangers Reign

Merrill Rangers

The Merrill Rangers baseball team thrilled many a fan during their heyday of the 1950s. Athletic Park was the "place to be" to cheer for the hometown heroes. The Rangers were the only team ever to win three consecutive state championships, from 1951 to 1953. Hank Aaron was but one of many outstanding players to compete against the Rangers. As a member of the Eau Claire Bears, he played in Merrill on June 29, 1952. The exploits of the Rangers are documented in the book "The Rangers Reign", by Louis Paetsch and Michael Weckwerth.

Fromm Foxes - Merrill Foxes

The Merrill City team, forerunner to the Foxes, played football in Merrill during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1935,the Green Bay Packers, who toured the state during their training season, offered to come to Merrill and play the Merrill team. To come to Merrill, the Packers needed a guarantee of $300, which was underwritten by the Fromm Brothers Fox Ranch. The team adopted the name Fromm Foxes. On August 31, 1935, the Foxes tangled with the Packers at Athletic Park. The Packers won that game, 34 to 0.

The Fromm Foxes were disbanded during World War II. The team resurfaced after the war as the Merrill Foxes. During the 1940s, the team won three straight Wisconsin State Football League titles.
