Avril 14th or Nike Commercial "Magnet"?[edit]

The music backing "Iran So Far" is listed in the article as being licensed from "Avril 14th" by Aphex Twin. However, daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle appears strikingly similar to the music created by Kathy Fisher from Fisher The Band in the Nike commercial with Lance Armstrong "Magnet" which can be viewed here: casinoextra.fr?v=HXWgGrEtFWg

Can someone please explain this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk)15 October (UTC)

It's definitely Avril 14th. You can preview it here if you have iTunes.15 October (UTC)

-Yes I know, but what do you make of the daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle to the song linked? Is there also a connection between Avril 14th and that composition? —Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk)15 October (UTC)

I'll admit that the piano portions in "Magnet" do contain similar motifs to Avril 14th, but Iran So Far is absolutely a direct sample. It's not worth mentioning in the article that the music sounds similar to a Nike commercial.16 October (UTC)

Date linkifying[edit]

What's the rule on whether dates should be linked? The years in the air shorts for are links, but not the years in the other tables. I think the tables look better with them linked, but I can't find a rule in the style guide. But I did find double disc cycle without gear years in section headers shouldn't be links. (See Wikipedia:Only make links that are relevant to the context) (PS: forgive me if I'm not following the correct talk format, I've never used a talk page before) Afoglia22 April (UTC)

Sorting[edit]

I think these shorts should be listed by date, not by title. It just seems to make more sense for an encyclopedic article - episodes of shows are listed by date. Without objection, I'll make the change in a few days. Alvis26 May (UTC)

You have my support. -- Viewdrix26 May (UTC)

Response section?[edit]

Can anyone find criticism or praise for the shorts? They gained plenty of publicity after Lazy Sunday, daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle, but overall, no one's really stated whether they're good on the whole or not, quality-wise or for-the-show-wise. The closest I've seen is a "debate" in Entertainment Weekly that The Lonely Island put on their website, but I hesitate to use that because it's a scan of a magazine, which may be slightly illegal. -- Viewdrix26 May (UTC)

I don't see why you can't use santa clarita basketball coach arrested. But I'd reference it as a print item. I could see both arguments for linking to the scanned version.22 April (UTC)

Quick thing.[edit]

I accidentally clicked diamond skateboard deck early, but what I meant to say in an edit summary is that for consistency, let's name people in the Short if they're revealed to be playing themselves. Otherwise the entire casts of Shorts will start to be listed, which would be horrible in cases such as The Tangent. -- Viewdrix30 May (UTC)

"Digital"?[edit]

Why are these called "Digital" shorts? In what sense are they digital? Does this luau volleyball chicago they were produced using digital video cameras and PC- or Mac-based software? The first time I saw the introduction to one of these, I was expecting computer animation or something.

Could an explanation of this daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle be added to the article, maybe with the reason "digital" shorts are different from other shorts that SNL has done for years?

No idea. Guesses? The show went digital/HDTV this season, the season where Digital Shorts began. I personally know they are put together using fairly standard personal computer editing software because of The Lonely Island's comments and past, but I doubt that has anything to do with it. -- Viewdrix16 June (UTC)
The guy who asked the question is right. All of the shooting is done with consumer grade DV cameras and PCs/Macs. I remember the interview after Lazy Sunday where they said the shooting was done in a couple days and edited on a laptop bought on Craigslist. --waffle irontalk16 June (UTC)
I added an explaination in the opening paragraph and cited it. --waffle irontalk16 June (UTC)

Lonely Island responsible?[edit]

I don't believe the Lonely Island fellows are responsible for all the digital shorts. I can recall seeing SNL Digital Shorts back in the 90s. A quick Googling shows at least some references to SNL Digital Shorts before they joined the decathlon jobs singapore [1]

There have always been filmed segments on the show, like the New York City Confessions this season, or the Steve Martin opening last season. However, it seems those labelled "Digital Shorts" are at least directed by Akiva Shaffer, and many written and produced by The Lonely Island. The only proof against it is one semi-anonymous Internet user who may just be referring to a previous filmed segment as a "Digital Short". -- Viewdrix14 November (UTC)

"Dick in a Box" (or whatever it's actually called)[edit]

Now that the NY Times has written a lengthy, in-depth article on the sketch, it's been viewed something like four million times, and almost every well-known blog (including those that could be considered reliable has mentioned/written about it, I think it's time for "Dick in a Box" to get its own article. Anyone agree? -- Kicking22 December (UTC)

The NY Times article focuses more on the network releasing an uncensored sketch onto the Internet rather than the Short's popularity itself. I think we should wait at least another week to see where the popularity leads, if it becomes referenced in other media (though it'd be much harder to quote it like Lazy Sunday was), etc. Lazy Sunday's article was made 4 days after originally airing, yes, but it was nothing more than a short, short summary and the lyrics for a while. -- Viewdrix22 December (UTC)

Bleeped by censors: what it means.[edit]

Here's the thing. Yes, producers and the network allowed the song to be bleeped on air to follow standards and practices. The censors, however, daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle, are the people actually in the control room daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle the "bleep" button between the time something is live in-studio, and when it's aired seconds later across the country. Now, the important thing about the wording is that to say the producers bleeped the short would mean they prepared the short with bleeps already in before showing it to the audience, when the laugh track on the uncensored video implies that they did not; instead, the video was shown uncensored to the audience, and was bleeped by the censors before airing on television seconds later. -- Viewdrixdaniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle, 24 December (UTC)

No more table[edit]

I think each short should have their own section. As daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle to the table. It'd be easier to organize and we could go into more detail. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk)23 January (UTC).

I fear that by doing that and going into detail over each one, we'd find the article far too long in less than a year. Not near every Digital Short is worth going into detail, especially in terms of individual short popularity. Going into detail about a sketch just because it's a Digital Short seems unnecessary. -- Viewdrix23 January (UTC)

Taco Town[edit]

Personally, Taco Town is one of my favorite SNL Digital Shorts, I Think it should be added on the table.

Except it's not a Digital Short. The table isn't just hughlights, it's every Digital Short made, daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle. Just because something is filmed doesn't make it a Digital Short. Read the article. -- Viewdrix26 April (UTC)

Youtube links?[edit]

I disagree for multiple reasons. YouTube, if posted by NBC themselves and thus completely legal, offer the videos without any advertisements to annoy viewers. As well, NBC's video player has seemingly random location-based restrictions, barring me from some videos even in Canada. As an international website, Wikipedia should not post videos restricted to a single country. There's nothing more "proper" about it at all. -- Viewdrix7 October (UTC)
I agree with Viewdrix, linking to sites with regional restrictions when there is a site that offers the same video internationally is kind of against the worldwide point of view rule here on Wiki. MacGruber 7 (Pepsi)[edit]

Can we make a note? I can't confirm it yet, but I'm pretty sure the MacGruber bits from last night were legitimate ads. Weird for ads, but still ads. First, they aired between other commercials or right after the announcement of the next host/musical guest, where other MacGrubers aired right before or after live sketches, and definitely before next host/musical guest announcements. Second, they didn't air in Canada. Basically, here's what happens in Canada nowadays: as it is with many shows, Global TV owns the rights to SNL and takes over the NBC SD and HD feeds during the timeslot so that they can show their own commercials and get more money. The MacGruber bits got thrown out and replaced with Canadian commercials, but when I watched the West Coast NBC HD feed (which the Canadian network doesn't take over, since feed-hijacking is basically done by region and no East Coast affiliate would logically take over a West Coast feed for me), they were in there with the American daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle. Of course, there's the mountain view high school water polo that they were considered real sketches that were part of the show and Global accidentally cut them out three times but Occam's Razor makes me think they're just ads. Reference 39[edit]

There is a reference to a blog after a small bit about Dear Sister not being uploaded to the SNL website as well as taken down from iTunes. It is stated as fact, but it does not come from any statement made by NBC or any member of the SNL cast/crew. It is stated that it was considered in bad taste as though a major media outlet issued a statement, NBC issued a statement, or SNL cast/crew issued a statement. In fact, it is actually a personal reaction made by some Internet nobody who is completely unrelated. It should not only be stricken from the page as a reference, but also this bit should be edited in some way to account for the missed the vein shooting up that it is merely a supposition that the VT shootings are related to its absence from NBC's site. Nitpicking, sure, but I don't think people need any more reasons to discredit Wikipedia's integrity. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Scarletst (talk • contribs)25 November (UTC)

It should not only be stricken from the page as a reference, but shooting in toronto canada today this bit should be edited in some way to account for the fact that it is merely a supposition that the VT shootings are related to its daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle from NBC's site. Daniel Radcliffe Hosted Saturday Night Live – Does The Harry Potter Star Have Comedic Chops??

Daniel Radcliffe Hosted Saturday Night Live – Does The Harry Potter Star Have Comedic Chops??

My friends keep telling me that I’m crazy to have not gotten into the Harry Potter franchise.  I will one of these days – when I have the time to read and watch all 20 of them (give or take).  So although I’m not a fan of the film, and not very knowledgeable about Daniel Radcliffe’s acting chops, I was still curious to see his skills while hosting last night’s Saturday Night Live.

I thought that young Daniel did pretty well, and was thoroughly surprised at his comedic timing and his ability to hold his own against the SNL comedy vets.

It was Daniel’s first time as host, and you can be sure there were many hilarious Harry Potter scenes, daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle, as well as skits mocking Casey Anthony, Ricky Gervais and Jersey Shore.  Daniel wasn’t shy either, even partaking in several man-on-man kisses with homeless spin-the-bottle participants.  One of my favorite skits was Daniel playing Harry himself at Hogwarts School inunable to let go of his ‘glory days’ and welcoming new students.

So all in all, Danny-boy did a good job.  I’m a new fan and perhaps a pinch closer to committing to HP.  Just a pinch.

'SNL': Daniel Radcliffe turned in a solid effort, Lana Del Rey turned off Twitter followers

I tried, and therefore, no one should criticize me. That was one of the lines uttered by Daniel Radcliffe&#x;s hopelessly ambitious character Brad during the people-with-no-self-awareness sketch You Can Do Anything. Still, the sentiment certainly applies to Radcliffe&#x;s effort as a first-time Saturday Night Live host. While the show itself was certainly worthy of criticism (as was musical guest Lana Del Rey, but more on that in a bit) it&#x;s hard to rag on The Woman in Black star, who gave it his all in spite of working with 8ft by 6ft football goal rather subpar material. Read on for the sketch-by-sketch rundown of last night&#x;s disappointing episode.

Last night&#x;s SNL kicked off with a tepid cold open featuring a flat Jason Sudeikis as an even flatter Mitt Romney, which lamely addressed his troublesome firing comment. (Wouldn&#x;t a meeting with fire-happy Donald Trump have been better here?) Things picked up once an enthusiastic Radcliffe hit the stage for his spirited opening monologue in which he shared with the audience his trepidations about doing a Harry Potter sketch. (Don&#x;t worry, it still happened.) Radcliffe earned some solid laughs, but it was Taran Killam who stole the whole thing (something the rising star seems to be doing more and preppy sport coats of each week) with his version of a displeased Dumbledore. Watch as Snooki and The Situation soccer camps northeast in for a visit during the monologue, too:

While Sudeikis&#x; Romney had no bite, his impression of a lip-biting Ricky Gervais was somewhat more on-point. His Golden Globes sketch should have been a scathing parody, but all it did was make me more excited to watch Gervais unleash hell during tonight&#x;s festivities. Then again, I can&#x;t really diss a sketch that shows the endlessly amusing Brendan Fraser clap clip.

Despite Kristen Wiig&#x;s best efforts, it may be time to lay off the Target Lady. (Maybe this is where Mitt Romney could have actually been of some use.) It was amusing to watch Bill Hader&#x;s deranged boss (who looks an awful lot like the one he played in the criminally underrated Adventureland) hit on Mullet-ed Radcliffe, but the recurring sketch bridger bowl whale officially started to run its course. Brandon university volleyball roster, for anyone who didn&#x;t get to the chance to see Equus, seeing Radcliffe tear his shirt open must have come as a treat.

The aforementioned You Can Do Anything bit fell victim to an ongoing problem with some SNL sketches as of late: It daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle compete with Portlandia. Yes, our shameless YouTube generation is easy to make fun of, but its all in the execution, which this sketch desperately missed and Portlandia seems to be effortlessly pulling off in their new season. Of course, even in the midst of a mediocre sketch, Radcliffe shined as the hilarious Brad, a poor sap who majored in poetry and clowning and who&#x;s only talent was performing Irish jig while doing Chinese calligraphy. Pretty impressive stuff, really. Watch it here:

It made sense to have Radcliffe in a sketch called You Can Do Anything as the versatile actor can do just about everything, including locking lips with a series of sketchy hobos for the silly pre-taped Spin the Bottle segment. The sketch that followed, the Joe Biden-approved Jersey Boys rip-off Delaware Fellas further proved that Radcliffe should be in all Broadway productions, real or otherwise, but mocking the wildly popular musical felt a bit late to the game. Besides, no one has ever zinged Delaware better than SNL alum Mike Myers inWayne&#x;s World.

Next&#x;Harry Potter and Lana Del Rey

At long last: A Harry Potter sketch! Not only that, but HP fans got to see their beloved wizard in the future without that terrible old man make-up. Turns out, J.K. Rowling never informed readers that by the yearHarry was desperate to hold on to his glory days, Hagrid and Luna got married (an impressive Moynahan and Abby Elliot) and Snape regretted that whole secretly-looking-after-Harry thing (the genius Hader doing a fantastic Alan Rickman.) Re-live the magic:

If Radcliffe was making a strong first impression as daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle SNL host (I wouldn&#x;t be surprised if they had him back someday) first-time musical guest Lana Del Rey did anything but. Just ask the Internet. After both of the singer&#x;s warbly performances, first Video Games and then Blue Jeans , the Twitterverse was doing anything but singing the controversial pop star&#x;s praises. (Not to mention misspelling her name, as Lana Del Ray was a trending topic until the early hours of Sunday daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle Having never heard Del Rey perform live myself (which was probably the case for many viewers, considering the singer hasn&#x;t released her debut album yet) I&#x;d venture to say she made her mark on SNL, but probably not the one she&#x;d hoped for. Watch her Blue Jeans performance:

Radcliffe continued his theme of saving the night when he played Casey Anthony&#x;s recently adopted Yorkshire terrier during a Weekend Update segment. Dressed as the terrified pup, Radcliffe handled a touchy subject with ease and earned the hardest laughs of the night from the patient SNL audience. ( Where was Sarah McLachlan on that one? he pondered about his adoption. That actually marked the second Sarah McLachlan joke of the evening, proving those heart-crushing SPCA commercials ruin everyone&#x;s day, including SNL writers.) However, there was no saving the dreadful sketch about a theater troupe from the future or Jay Pharoah&#x;s misguided talk show sketch in which he could do nothing more than his stock impressions, which may just be an unfortunate analogy about his place on SNL. It was awkward for sure, but not in the good Between Two Ferns or Chris Farley Show kind of way.

I sincerely doubt anyone will be voting for more of Wiig&#x;s Glenda Okones mayoral campaign sketches (SNL should lock down their impressions of current politicians before turning to fictitious ones) but I definitely got on board with her overly-intrusive and inappropriate exit poll-er. Watch Wiig (who I personally would love to see win a Golden Globe tonight corsair rm750 fan not spinning her phenomenal work in Bridesmaids) hassle an unsuspecting &#x; and yes, male &#x; Republican Radcliffe here:

The show concluded with the enjoyable-enough fake commercial for the sadly-necessary Headz Up, daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle, a device for people who can&#x;t help but looking down at their phones, no matter what. Sadly, the first legitimate smile I cracked all night came at the very end when Radcliffe signed off and a genuinely supportive Bill Hader hugged the star and exclaimed, You did it!

What did you think of Daniel Radcliffe&#x;s episode of Saturday Night Live, PopWatchers? Which sketches did you love? Hate? Did you join the chorus of those utterly baffled by Lana Del Rey or do you think it was the sound in Studio 8H that did her no favors? Share in the comments section below.

RATINGS SYSTEM

***** = Excellent, a possible future classic

**** = Great

*** = Average

** = Meh

* = How'd this get past dress?

Cold Opening - Romney: Believe in America

• I thought last week’s cold opening was dull, but this takes the cake. The odd thing about that is Jason’s comically-boring Mitt Romney is usually much funnier than Andy’s just-flat-out-boring Rick Santorum. But tonight’s all-around-bland cold opening made me realize that SNL has almost nothing to work with among most of these republican candidates. The candidates overall are just boring so far and have very little about them that’s spoof-worthy. SNL’s going to be in trouble during this upcoming election season unless 1) some good dirt on these candidates starts arising, 2) the candidates develop an actual personality worth parodying, or 3) Jim “Past His Prime” Downey finally steps down and SNL lets that young new political writer they hired from casinoextra.fr take over in writing the political cold openings.

• I watched this entire sketch, and I STILL remember practically nothing about it. Absolutely nothing. The only part that I recall getting even a slight chuckle from me was some line Jason had about his “five human sons”. Other than that, nothing. All I can remember is Jason badly flubbing one or two lines and Abby appearing in a typical nothing role as a waitress.

Stars: *

Monologue - Daniel Radcliffe

• At the beginning when the camera cut to the audience applauding after Radcliffe walked out, I couldn’t help but notice the familiar set for the old Target Lady sketches in the background. I let out the biggest groan when I realized that damn sketch was going to return tonight, but at least I was given an early warning sign for it.

• A pretty funny - if slightly unoriginal - monologue. SNL’s had monologues that used a similar premise before (Gabriel Byrne’s monologue where Colin Quinn and Fred Wolf keep appearing behind him dressed a potato and a bottle of whiskey while he talks about how he’s happy SNL won’t be resorting to Irish stereotypes; Eva Longoria’s monologue where she states she won’t do sketches about Hispanic stereotypes just as Horatio Sanz is about to walk onstage wearing a sombrero and fake Mexican mustache), but tonight’s was pulled off well.

• At first, I was wondering why Dumbledore was played by Taran instead of Bill this time (Bill has previously played him in a sketch before), but then Bill later showed up here playing The Situation.

Stars: ***

Commercial - Ricky Gervais Promos

• I always get a kick out of Jason’s Gervais impression, and this was a good way to parody his notoriety from last year’s Golden Globes-hosting stint.

• My favorite parts were the Kids Choice Awards and Dog Show scenes.

• The cutaway to a dog sitting at a table like celebrities do at award shows was a funny brief sight gag.

Stars: ***½

Sketch - Target Lady

• No, just no. With the recent return of Nicholas Fehn and now Target Lady after their long hiatuses, who will become the next annoying recurring character to be needlessly resurrected after not appearing in ages? My money is on Kenan’s Virginiaca character.

Stars: *½ (the “½” is for Bill’s funny performance as the hot dog-devouring boss)

Sketch - You Can Do Anything

• Another sketch in the tradition of I Didn’t Ask for This/Finding Your Power/The Comments Section. I don’t really mind this method of doing variations of the same format; it’s better than them just simply making any of those sketches recurring where they would probably just copy-and-paste a majority of the jokes.

• That being said, tonight’s sketch didn’t work nearly as well as it should have. While I understood exactly what type of people this sketch was going after (specifially, untalented YouTubers & millenials who think they're more talented than they are), the writing and execution came off sloppy, under-developed, and repetitive. It’s hard to explain specifically what the problem was; there were just a lot of things about the sketch that made me confused - especially the attitudes of the two hosts. It felt like the hosts kept going back-and-forth between being sarcastic towards the guests and being overly-understanding toward them, as if the writer of this sketch couldn’t decide which attitude to go with. The result was kinda messy and confusing.

• Funniest exchange in the sketch: “I’m what you call Twitter famous!” “Meaning?” “Not famous.”

Stars: **½

Miscellaneous - Spin the Bottle

• Very low-brow and stupid, but I do admit to laughing a few times in spite of myself. As a whole, this wasn’t much, daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle, though, and in the end the whole thing felt pointless.

• I got a good laugh from Fred “freshening up” by putting deodorant on this tongue. I also liked Bill’s facial expression as the “dead” hobo and Kenan’s deranged character.

• Very lame ending with Jay. The whole build-up to the end had me thinking something hilarious was going to be revealed boy, was I wrong!

Stars: **½

Sketch - Delaware Fellas

• This sketch’s premise was one of those ideas that’s funnier in concept than in execution. This would’ve been fine as a quick little joke in a different sketch, but as an entire full-length sketch of its own? Nope, sorry, not gonna work.

• Kenan’s intentionally-horrible Italian accent was one of the very few things I laughed at, pole vault practice equipment with Jason as Joe Biden giving a review of the play.

• Taran messed up during one of the times they were all supposed to say “Capisce!” in unison: Taran started to say it way too early by himself right before one of Kenan’s lines, then Taran caught himself halfway through and stopped. That was kinda funny.

Stars: *½

Sketch - Harry Potter in

• An interesting and clever way of doing the inevitable Harry Potter parody of the night. This ended up being a pretty good sketch.

• The castmembers’ impressions of the Harry Potter characters were mostly really funny. My favorites were Paul as Malfoy and Bill as Professor Snape. Bill in particular was just excellent.

Stars: ***½

Weekend Update - Seth Meyers, featuring Kim Jong Un’s Two Best blah blah blah blah blah, Casey Anthony’s Dog

• Best jokes: Drug-stealing sign

• What the ?!? Oh, you have got daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle be kidding me. They’ve now found a way to bring back that lousy one-joke Gadhafi’s Two Best Friends From Growing Up bit (that I assumed was now dead since Gadhafi himself is) by changing it to Kim Jong Un’s Best Friends, yet still copying-and-pasting THE EXACT SAME unfunny whispering joke and punchline from before? Are you kidding me? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME??!?! I I have no words. But if I did, I guarantee you they would be very family-unfriendly expletives directed towards Mr. Fred Armisen.

• Random olden kayaking Vanessa looked like Molly Shannon in that wig.

• The Casey Anthony’s Dog segment was an interesting change of pace for Update and ended up being a pretty funny commentary. Radcliffe did an excellent job in this role. Also, it’s very rare to see the hosts ever appear on Weekend Update. If you don’t count former castmembers who’ve hosted, then who was the last first-time host to appear on Update? Gerard Butler in ?

• Two Sarah McLachlan dog commercial references in the same episode? Strange.

Stars: **

Sketch - X27B Theater

• I get the feeling I liked this sketch more than most people did. I found the premise of seeing how people in the future would look back at this current era to be really interesting and fresh for SNL standards, and the execution was decent enough. While this wasn’t laugh-out-loud funny (and it should’ve been, with better writing), I found the sketch to be pretty fun and cute.

• This was an accurate parody of how people tend to generalize and stereotype previous decades and ages. For example, the parts of this sketch where they played the Outkast song “Hey Ya” to represent reminds me of some sitcom I saw where they did a flashback sequence to what their life was like back in The flashback featured a whole bunch of over-the-top obvious 80s stereotypes, but the ridiculous thing was that in one part where the characters were dancing to what we’re supposed to believe greenbrier high school basketball schedule a new hit song at the time, it was a song that actually came out in The song would’ve already been old and dated by Inaccuracies like that are what the “Hey Ya” thing in this sketch was making fun of.

• My favorite part of the sketch was the allusion that Taylor Swift will become infamous for assassinating someone in the future. Although as far-fetched and unlikely to happen as that sounds, you never know. After all, who would’ve guessed back in the 70s and 80s that good-ol’ lovable O.J. Simpson would end up going down the path he did?

• NOW do you guys believe me when I pointed out in my review last week how Nasim plays nothing but old ladies nowadays? Hate to say I told you so, but

• Kristen actually looked embarrassed to utter the line “Stop looking at that close-up of a penis going into a woman’s butt”. You could tell by the shy/awkward look on her face during that line and the way she quickly jumped to the next sentence afterwards, as if she couldn’t wait to get it over with. This is odd if you ask me, considering Kristen has had to deliver far more-humiliating lines throughout her SNL tenure. This was hardly the worst line she was ever given, so why the sudden shyness here? It’s not like her to hold back.

• How come some of the people in the fake theater audience stopped laughing towards the end (especially Abby), while other theater members kept laughing all throughout?

Stars: ***

Commercial - Glenda Okones for Mayor #1

• At first, I wondered if Kristen was playing a real politician that I’m not familiar with, before I realized that no real politician would have a name THIS goofy-sounding.

• The idea of someone doing an attack ad on themselves is hilarious and I did like Kristen’s delivery as this character (although the voice was too similar to her Greta Van Susteren impression), but this commercial daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle really developed beyond that. This wasn’t nearly as funny as it should’ve been.

• Nothing else to say here really, as this was just the first of three ads.

Stars: **½

Commercial - Glenda Okones for Mayor #2

• Two consecutive Glenda Okones ads with no sketch in between? That’s just awkward.

• This was the best of the three, if only because of the funny bit with Okones openly admitting she loves her youngest daughter more than the oldest, as well as the “I don’t do maintenance” line about her body.

Stars: ***

Sketch - The Jay Pharoah Show

• Similar to what I said about “You Can Do Anything” earlier in this review, I understand what this sketch was trying to go after, but it didn’t really work.

• Much like how the classic The Chris Farley Show sketches were later revealed to be an inside joke on Farley’s real-life personality behind the scenes at SNL, I’m assuming that this Jay Pharoah Show sketch is similarly parodying what Jay is like behind the scenes. I imagine that he probably just sits around making people around him laugh with his celebrity impressions and voices, but is very bad at contributing to actual conversations with others and also bad at contributing to pitch meetings and sketch writings (which would explain why the writers put him into very few sketches I also imagine Abby Elliott is probably the same way).

• But here’s the problem with this sketch: while The Chris Farley Show is genuinely funny even to those who aren’t familiar with Farley’s real-life personality, this sketch is daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle mostly only funny to Jay’s co-workers at SNL who are in on the sketch’s joke. Farley came off to general audiences as both hilarious and endearing in the Chris Farley Show sketches, whereas this sketch made Jay come off as a dull one-trick pony with no personality. That is not good.

• It also didn’t help that most of the impressions Jay did in this sketch are ones that he’s done to death: Denzel, Will Smith. His Chris Rock is still somewhat fresh, though - I especially love the detail of copying the way Rock fidgets with his fingers while he’s ranting. And it was nice to see him debut a Tracy Morgan impression, even if the voice wasn’t all that great (I’ve honestly seen better Tracy Morgan impressions from other comedians), daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle. The belly rub at the end was dead-on, though.

• The only real inspired joke of the whole sketch was just a quick throwaway one: Radcliffe’s ridiculously-tall glass of water, which was almost taller than him! The rest of this sketch didn’t really work and went nowhere.

Stars: **

Commercial - Glenda Okones for Mayor #3

• Freaking overkill.

• Also, I mentioned this in a previous review earlier this season, but it bugs me when SNL comes back from a long commercial break only to show a quick second segment that’s immediately followed by ANOTHER long commercial break. It especially comes off irritating when that quick second segment is merely a pre-taped bit.

Stars: *½

Sketch - Exit Polling

• Honestly, this wasn’t too bad for a to-1 sketch. But by this point, I was so sick of the major Wiig overexposure tonight (it felt like she was even more overused than usual, and that’s saying something; she had a lead role in almost daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle single segment in this episode) that it clouded my judgment of this sketch a little. I’ve been trying my absolute best this season to avoid doing many long anti-Wiig rants that used to plague my reviews from the and seasons. Hell, I’ve even DEFENDED Kristen on a few rare occasions this season. Part of the reason why I’ve been trying to go easier on her lately is because I’ve come to slowly accept the fact that despite all her weaknesses and annoyances, Kristen is really the only strong female in the cast right now.

• Trying my best to judge this sketch fairly, I can see this had its moments with some pretty funny lines. I particularly liked that quick bit with Kristen saying “Oh, glad I asked then” after Radcliffe answered the obvious “male or female?” question.

Stars: **½

Commercial - Headz Up from World-Tel

• Whaddaya know - there’s Andy, making his first and only appearance tonight in a pre-taped segment that was filmed months ago. Now we know what Radcliffe meant a few days ago when he said he has yet to meet Andy Samberg; daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle Andy wasn’t there this week AT ALL. Wonder what happened to him. At first, I assumed he took the week off to shoot his scenes for a movie he’s in, but then I remembered they usually take castmembers out of the opening montage when daniel radcliffe snl spin the bottle skip an entire episode to film a movie/TV show (Will Ferrell went through this during his final season inas did Chris Parnell inMike Myers inetc.). So maybe Andy was just sick this week. That wouldn’t be the first time this has happened with him during his SNL tenure; he missed the Gerard Butler episode in ‘09 because he was supposedly feeling under-the-weather that week.

• Sorry for that off-topic spiel. ANYWAY this commercial has been cut after almost every single windsurfing vs sailing rehearsal this season, and after finally watching this, I can certainly see why it kept getting cut. An overall lame and unfunny fake ad. My only laugh came at the beginning when Vanessa got run over by a taxi.
