2nd half BCSS vs Fernie

In any fernie basketball, there's a shrill squeak of sneakers against the polished wood floor, and the echoing thud of a basketball. More often than not, if you're a good shot, there's a swish of the net.

And in Fernie Secondary School's gym, in particular, fernie basketball, there's a man who shoots the ball with precision, fernie basketball, fernie basketball least most of the time. A man who might not recognize fernie basketball significance or impact, but who goes to the gym purely for the love of the game.

That man is John Mill—I call him Milldog, fernie basketball. He's my high school basketball coach.

John and basketball might be the only reason I made it through high school. Not necessarily just because Principles of Math 12 sucked (it did), and Biology was a doozy (it was), but because first-love relationships ended in turmoil and heartbreak, and catty teenage girls oftentimes made walking the hallways unbearable (I wasn't as cool as I am now).

The moment the gym opened, and I laced up my shoes and grabbed a basketball, every adolescent worry melted away.

John would blow his whistle and we'd run across the gym for two hours. Practices were a mid-week reprieve, weekend tournaments were mini-holidays. And though we didn't always win, fernie basketball, and we weren't always great, being a part of a team greatly shaped our character, providing stability in an incredibly unstable time of life. I'm a little nostalgic just thinking about it.

But this isn't about me, it's about John. We met at the high school gym one afternoon in March to reminisce about his time on the court—he's retiring this year after 28 years of coaching the senior girls' basketball team.

John played on outdoor courts as a kid in East Vancouver and moved to Fernie in 1980 to teach. He refereed, fernie basketball, helped coached boys basketball, and taught math, fernie basketball. In 1990 an opportunity arose to coach the senior girls; he took it.

Excluding the 2009 season, when John's son's team needed a coach, he's been the head coach of the senior girls. He never quit, fernie basketball, despite challenges on and off the court. Basketball is life.

“What was the difference between coaching boys and girls?” I ask as we sit on the bench.

“The tears,” he replies.

“We cried a lot, fernie basketball, didn't we?”

“Yep.”

It's true—we cried all the time, fernie basketball. I remember losing games or making mistakes and becoming completely dislodged, us girls hiding our faces in the wide necks of our jerseys to stifle sobs, fernie basketball. We really loved basketball. John never reprimanded us for our emotional attachment to the game, though. He just coached.

He took his senior girls team to provincials over 50 percent of the years he coached, and teams from his first john talley soccer tournament in 1990 and 1991 wound up fourth and eight in the province, fernie basketball. But even when the teams didn't, fernie basketball, it never mattered. For John, coaching was never about winning.

“I love coaching,” he says. “It’s been such a fun way to spend the winters. Ex-players come back and want to help. Just the atmosphere in here is enough.”

Players come home to Fernie each Christmas for an alumni game—I've played in a few myself, fernie basketball. Sentiment floods back upon entering the gym; memories of bleachers filled with friends and family, of John and his incredible co-coaches rooting for their team from the bench, of the feeling of a swish in the net from a three-point shot far outside the fernie basketball as I might to remember anything bad about playing ball, fernie basketball, I can't. Basketball with Milldog was awesome. I still wear my FSS sweatpants all the time, fernie basketball, for goodness sake.

John doesn't mention it as we sit on the bench—because he's a humble man—but he's received awards from the Fernie basketball Columbia Basketball Officials Association (BCBOA) for his lengthy contributions to refereeing and coaching. I can't think of anyone more deserving.

“I'm going to buy a new pair of basketball shoes,” I promise him as we leave the gym, fernie basketball. “And come out to play on Thursdays in the fall.”

“You really should,” he replies.

With my new shoes, fernie basketball, I might land a couple left-handed layups (I was so good at those). But if I don't, because I've more than likely lost my magic touch, fernie basketball, and the fernie basketball reward instead is to lace up and play alongside John, fernie basketball, it'll be more than enough.

Young Nell Smith of Fernie is brushing shoulders with entertainment industry giants as she makes her way into the world of professional music.

On Tuesday, Jan. 4, Smith is set to have a music video that she recorded with The Flaming Lips appear on CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which has millions of viewers worldwide.

The song is a cover of Red Right Hand by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and is part of a 9-track cover album called Where The Viaduct Looms that Nell and The Flaming Lips released on Nov. 26, 2021.

Smith, a 14-year-old student at Fernie Secondary School, said she thinks appearing Stephen Colbert’s show is “amazing and crazy.”

“I’m just really excited and thankful for everything that’s going on.”

Smith has been making her way into the professional music scene for some years now with The Flaming Lips lead singer, Wayne Coyne, taking her under his wing.

Born in Leeds, England, Smith moved to Fernie when she was around five. She was introduced to music at the very beginning of her life. Her father, Jude Smith, would take her to shows from a young age.

Smith gravitated towards the alternative rock band The Flaming Lips, and managed to get Coyne’s attention at a show in Calgary. The young Fernie-ite and the rockstar began chatting near the stage before the show, and Coyne traded numbers with Jude. The family developed a relationship with The Flaming Lips, and the musical mentorship began.

The band is a “very supportive group of people,” Smith said.

“I’m so grateful and I think that it’s an amazing opportunity… that this is the way I’m being brought into the music industry.”

Nell and The Flaming Lips’ cover songs have been gaining attention, including by Nick Cave himself, which has led to her getting featured on The Late Show.

“It just sort of gathered pace. And I think the Lips do quite a lot on The Late Show and those things on CBS, and so they’re just on the books there,” Jude said.

“It just sort of progressed naturally.”

“I think that it’s like a miracle,” Smith said. “I’m so grateful. It’s too hard to explain, it’s so crazy.”

Looking forward, Smith is hoping to record an album of her own originals, perform them, and do her Nick Cave covers live.

Anfernee Simons

American basketball player

Anfernee Tyrik Simons (born June 8, 1999) is an American professional basketball player for the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played prep basketball for IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He is the first American to enter and be selected in an NBA draft directly after graduating from high school since the league first implemented age restriction rules in 2005.[1] Simons won the Slam Dunk Contest during the 2021 NBA All-Star Game event by a 3-2 judges decision.

High school career[edit]

Simons first attended Edgewater High School in Orlando, Florida, where during his sophomore year he averaged 17.8 points, 4.6 assists, 2.4 rebounds, and 1 steal per game in 30 games.[2] During his junior year he transferred to Montverde Academy in Montverde,[3] but after being a bench player, returned to Edgewater with the intention of holding his name back from college consideration for a year.[4] He graduated from Edgewater in 2017, averaging 23.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.8 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in 20 games played in his last year there.[2] Then, because of his reclassification in the Class of 2018, he attended the IMG Academy in Bradenton for a postgraduate year, although he had previously expressed interest in spending that year at the West Oaks Academy in Orlando instead.[5] During the summer of 2017, he also played for the United States men's national under-19 basketball team.[6]

Simons was rated as a five-star recruit and was ranked as the 7th best player in the 2018 class by 247Sports.com.[7] Originally, he planned to enter the University of Louisville,[8] but as a result of the basketball sex scandal of 2015 at the university and its involvement in the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball corruption scandal, he ultimately decommitted from Louisville, saying that he was most interested in the University of South Carolina, North Carolina State University, the University of Tennessee, and the University of Florida.[9] In January 2018, he then said that he was "most likely" going to bypass college and enter the 2018 NBA Draft, albeit without hiring an agent.[10] In March 2018 he confirmed his decision,[11] and later removed his name from the 2018 Nike Hoop Summit and Jordan Brand Classic.[12] On March 20, 2018, ESPN ranked him as the 19th best prospect in the draft.[13] Simons was later named one of the 69 players invited to the 2018 NBA Draft Combine that year.[citation needed]

Professional career[edit]

Portland Trail Blazers (2018–present)[edit]

Simons was selected 24th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2018 NBA draft.[14] He would be the third high school player since 2015 to be drafted in the NBA, behind Thon Maker and Satnam Singh Bhamara. On July 2, 2018, the Trail Blazers announced that they had signed Simons.[15]

On January 21, 2019, the Blazers assigned Simons to the Agua Caliente Clippers for an NBA G League assignment.[16]

On April 10, 2019, Simons had his first career start against the Sacramento Kings while the Trail Blazers rested Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum for the final game of the regular season. Simons put up career highs across the board with 37 points, 6 rebounds, and 9 assists, becoming the first Trail Blazers rookie to score 30+ points since Lillard.

In the championship round of the Slam Dunk Contest during halftime of the 2021 NBA All-Star Game, Simons attempted to kiss the rim, but failed and still completed the dunk. Despite his failed attempt, he won the 2021 Slam Dunk Champion in a 3-2 decision.[17]

On January 3, 2022, Simons scored a career-high 43 points behind nine three-pointers, along with seven assists, in a 136–131 win over the Atlanta Hawks. In a postgame interview, he dedicated the game to his grandfather who died of cancer the previous night.[18]

Simons was given the name Anfernee due to his parents, Charles and Tameka, being fans of the Orlando Magic and naming him after former player Penny Hardaway.[19][20] Hardaway coached Simons during a Team USA Basketball training camp.[13]

In any gym, there's a shrill squeak of sneakers against the polished wood floor, and the echoing thud of a basketball. More often than not, if you're a good shot, there's a swish of the net.

And in Fernie Secondary School's gym, in particular, there's a man who shoots the ball with precision, at least most of the time. A man who might not recognize his significance or impact, but who goes to the gym purely for the love of the game.

That man is John Mill—I call him Milldog.

And though we didn't always win, and we weren't always great, being a part of a team greatly shaped our character, providing stability in an incredibly unstable time of life.

He refereed, helped coached boys basketball, and taught math. In 1990 an opportunity arose to coach the senior girls; he took it.

Excluding the 2009 season, when John's son's team needed a coach, he's been the head coach of the senior girls. He never quit, despite challenges on and off the court. Basketball is life.

“What was the difference between coaching boys and girls?” I ask as we sit on the bench.

“The tears,” he replies.

“We cried a lot, didn't we?”

“Yep.”

It's true—we cried all the time. I remember losing games or making mistakes and becoming completely dislodged, us girls hiding our faces in the wide necks of our jerseys to stifle sobs. We really loved basketball. John never reprimanded us for our emotional attachment to the game, though. He just coached.

He took his senior girls team to provincials over 50 percent of the years he coached, and teams from his first years in 1990 and 1991 wound up fourth and eight in the province. But even when the teams didn't, it never mattered. For John, coaching was never about winning.

“I love coaching,” he says. “It’s been such a fun way to spend the winters. Ex-players come back and want to help. Just the atmosphere in here is enough.”

Players come home to Fernie each Christmas for an alumni game—I've played in a few myself. Sentiment floods back upon entering the gym; memories of bleachers filled with friends and family, of John and his incredible co-coaches rooting for their team from the bench, of the feeling of a swish in the net from a three-point shot far outside the key.

Try as I might to remember anything bad about playing ball, I can't. Basketball with Milldog was awesome. I still wear my FSS sweatpants all the time, for goodness sake.

John doesn't mention it as we sit on the bench—because he's a humble man—but he's received awards from the British Columbia Basketball Officials Association (BCBOA) for his lengthy contributions to refereeing and coaching. I can't think of anyone more deserving.

“I'm going to buy a new pair of basketball shoes,” I promise him as we leave the gym. “And come out to play on Thursdays in the fall.”

“You really should,” he replies.

With my new shoes, I might land a couple left-handed layups (I was so good at those). But if I don't, because I've more than likely lost my magic touch, and the only reward instead is to lace up and play alongside John, it'll be more than enough.
