Gay softball league - remarkable, rather

League

The City of Brotherly Love Softball League is a gay slow pitch softball league serving the Philadelphia metropolitan area. CBLSL serves two purposes: to promote, develop and operate a competitive, community based softball league for the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender community in metropolitan Philadelphia; and to support community nonprofit groups that support the gay community in Philadelphia.  All of the organizations officers are volunteers.

The word “charitable”, as used in Section 501(c)(4), has been broadly defined to mean “providing services beneficial to the public interest”.  The activities of CBLSL clearly benefit the public interest.  Promoting amateur athletics is beneficial to the health and well being of the general public.  Additionally, CBLSL will donate non-operating capital back into local nonprofit groups that support the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender community.

North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance

The North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA) is a non-profit, international association of gay and lesbiansoftball leagues.[1]

NAGAAA was founded in 1977 and the first elected Commissioner was Warren Shepell, from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and currently has 46 member leagues in the United States and Canada. The current Commissioner is John Deffee.

NAGAAA recognizes seven divisions of play, from the competitive A rank through B, C, D and E teams, plus two Masters Divisions for players age 50 and above. NAGAAA also maintains a player rating system used to evaluate player skill levels to ensure safety and competitive play. While each member city operates independently, NAGAAA membership allows for a consistent framework for operating interleague play during numerous tournaments hosted by member cities and at the two annual NAGAAA hosted tournaments, the Gay Softball World Series (GSWS) for all divisions and the NAGAAA Cup Invitational tournament for A and B division teams. The 2019 GSWS held in Kansas City includes "208 teams and is expected to attract more than 5,000 people."[2] The NAGAAA has grown to more than 3,000 teams and 25,000 participants.[2] The GSWS is the largest annual, LGBTQ, "single-sport, week-long athletic competition in the world."[2]

Prior to 2007, there was also a division for all female teams but the Amateur Sports Alliance of North America was formed from NAGAAA in 2007.

Current Member Leagues[edit]

Gay Softball World Series[edit]

Each year teams representing these leagues participate in the NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series (GSWS), hosted each year in a different member city.

Each member city is allowed to send an unlimited number of teams in the A division and up to three team in each of the B, C, D and E divisions based on the size of the local league, with larger cities allowed more teams. Members cities are encouraged to send at least one team to the GSWS each year.

ABOUT SURF & SUN

Surf and Sun provides a safe, comfortable environment for LGBTQ community to play softball in the Long Beach and Orange County area. While many of us simply play for fun, our affiliation with NAGAAA (North American Gay Amateur Athletics Alliance) and ASANA (Amateur Sports Alliance of North America) allows teams in our league to participate in the World Series Tournament. We offer all levels of play ranging from beginner to advanced skill set. Softball is a great place to make new friends in a recreational and athletic setting. Our players come from all areas of Southern California, not solely the LGBTQ communities. We are most definitely “straight friendly” and welcome all diversities. Our goal is to provide a gay-friendly atmosphere for softball players and their fans. We hope to see you on the fields!

  • Who: Mostly Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, Transgender but straight players are welcome!
  • What: Softball – Open (Men and women) and Women’s Divisions, with various levels of play each.
  • Where: Surf and Sun plays in the City of Tustin.
  • When: We offer both spring (March through July) and fall (Sept through Dec) seasons.
  • Why: To have fun, meet people, and go to the Gay Softball World Series.

Gay Softball got a staggered start in the Long Beach area. In 1978, four teams gathered to play organized ball, but those initial efforts faded resulting in no formal play for the next two years. In 1981 a dedicated group of athletes formed a league with six teams and we have been playing every year since then.

Initially, the organization started out as the Southwest Athletic Team Supports (SWATS), and in 1983 joined with the well-respected North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA). In 1984 the league held its first tournament during the 4th of July weekend and named it the Surf and Sun Liberty Classic. The tournament has been played every year since with great success with teams from all across the country and Canada.

Ready to expand due to increased interest, we added the Women’s Division in the early 1990s. Later that decade we changed our name again to the Long Beach / Orange County Surf and Sun Softball League. This change was made to better define the area that most of our league members call home. In 2001, the league added another tournament called the Cranberry Cup to its schedule. This tournament was played over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Cranberry Cup only made 3 appearances, but was a precursor to what was to come in 2005. The California Quake rumbled into Palm Springs to fill the need for a local fall tournament.

The future of the Surf and Sun Softball League looks brighter with each passing season. As more athletes dedicate their time and energy to the league, the quality of play increases. We anticipate a successful future with a committed board of directors working diligently on behalf of the league.

We hope to see you on the fields!

Pride San Antonio was founded in 2004 as Gay Pride SA to provide a community Pride festival and celebration that was all inclusive with a focus of recognizing the contributions of the LGBT community in the San Antonio metropolitan area. Gay Pride SA was founded to facilitate the needs of individuals so that individuals can facilitate the needs of the community.

In 2008 Gay Pride SA began hosting a variety of LGBT charity sports events such as LGBT charity softball and bowling tournaments. Over the years teams expressed an interest in having an LGBT softball league in San Antonio and asked Pride SA if they would create one, gay softball league. In 2012 Pride San Antonio began exploring the possibility of creating an LGBT softball league and in Spring 2015 at Rusty Lyons Softball Complex in San Antonio the San Antonio Gay Softball League held its inaugural season.

In 2018 the San Antonio Gay Softball League would change its name and become the San Antonio Pride Softball League. That same year Pride SA launched the San Antonio Pride Women's Softball League. The San Antonio Pride Women's Softball League and the San Antonio Pride Softball League are official programs of Pride San Antonio along with other events such as the Pride Bigger Than Texas Festival and Parade gay softball league San Antonio QFest-LGBT International Film Festival .

While there will be wins, losses, and friendly competition, the primary goal of the league is to provide another outlet for everyone to show their support of the LGBTQ community.
