Why does my washing machine pour water during the spin cycle?

My washing machine has an issue where it pours water during the spin cycle, while it is draining. Basically, it pours water from the top while draining it out from the bottom. It drains the water faster than it can pour it, so it does not actually fill with water, but it does re-wet the clothes, so the clothes are dripping wet when the cycle is complete.

It also agitates while filling with water. This is not much of a problem, but it started happening the same time that the other issue above started happening.

Model: Kenmore Elite 26964503

This is what the washing machine is supposed to do:

  1. Wash Cycle
    1. Fill with water.
    2. When full, begin agitating.
    3. After a while, drain water.
  2. Rinse Cycle
    1. Fill with water.
    2. When full, begin agitating.
    3. After a while, drain water.
  3. Spin Cycle
    1. Spin while draining water.
    2. When empty, continue spinning and draining.
    3. After a while, stop.

This is what the washing machine actually does (the bold text marks the differences):

  1. Wash Cycle
    1. Fill with water while agitating.
    2. When full, continue agitating.
    3. After a while, drain water.
  2. Rinse Cycle
    1. Fill with water while agitating.
    2. When full, continue agitating.
    3. After a while, drain water.
  3. Spin Cycle
    1. Spin while draining water.
    2. When empty, continue spinning and draining but also begin pouring water from top.
    3. After a while, stop.

The main problem is 3-2: in the spin cycle, the machine begins to pour water after it has drained all of the water. It is not supposed to be pouring water at this point; it defeats the purpose of the spin cycle.

What could this be? What would cause it to pour water during the spin cycle?

How to Troubleshoot a GE Profile Washer Spin Cycle

GE's Profile Series of washing machines come equipped with a variety of specialty cycles that make washing uncommon items, such as fleece or pet bedding, easier. But no matter what type of laundry you're washing, the spin cycle is one of the machine's most important. Spinning the load at high speeds removes excess water and detergent residue so your laundry isn't dripping wet when it's done. Occasionally, you may notice issues with your washer's spin cycle that can impede its performance. You can resolve some of these problems yourself, but others may require a trained service technician to get your washer back in working order.

Doesn't Spin

If your washer won’t enter the spin cycle, check that the load is properly balanced. The washer may not spin if all of the clothes are gathered in one section of the tub, so redistribute as necessary and run the drain-and-spin or rinse-and-spin cycle to finish the load. If you are washing a small load, you may need to add items to increase the load size to ensure proper balance. When a load is properly balanced but still won’t spin, there may be an issue that prevents the water from draining from the machine. Make sure the drain hose is properly connected and that there are no kinks or pinched areas. Your washer may not drain and enter the spin cycle if the pump filter is clogged. Use a flathead screwdriver to open the pump access door at the bottom of the washer’s front. Set a small dish or pan beneath it to catch any water that emerges before pulling down the pour spout. To remove the pump filter, turn it counterclockwise and pull it out slowly to prevent the water from pouring out too quickly. Clean the filter of any debris and then replace it, reassembling the washer. A clogged household drain can also cause water to stand in the washer and prevent the spin cycle from starting. Contact a plumber to address the issue.

Pauses In Cycle

You may expect your washer’s spin cycle to continue uninterrupted until it is finished. However, if you notice your washer occasionally pauses during the cycle, it isn’t necessarily cause for concern. In some cases, when there is excess water and suds, the machine may need to stop the cycle momentarily to get rid of the soapy water more efficiently. Leave the washer alone and the cycle will eventually restart on its own.

Laundry Too Wet

While your laundry will still be wet after the spin cycle completes, it should not be dripping or overly saturated. If you notice excessive wetness, check that the load is properly balanced and redistribute the items if necessary before restarting the spin cycle. You may also need to alter the spin speed to get your laundry drier. The spin speed changes the final spin speed of each cycle, with high spin speeds removing more water from your clothing and other items. However, to avoid damage check manufacturer’s labels to determine the proper speed for your garments and linens. To change the speed, press the Spin Speed button until you reach your chosen setting. Keep in mind that some cycles, such as Delicates, do not allow for higher spin speeds.

Strange Sounds

You may hear strange sounds during your washer’s spin cycle that seem to indicate a problem with your machine. However, some noises are part of the spin cycle’s normal operating procedure. It is normal to hear the motor whining up or coasting down during the spin cycle because it speeds up in increments during the cycle and slowly coasts to a stop at the conclusion. You may also hear a high-pitched sound during the cycle when the wash basket spins more quickly to get rid of the load’s excess moisture. A pinging sound is normal during the spin cycle as well, because the washer is equipped with special rinse features that help remove excess detergent residue from the load. If you hear other noises, however, contact GE at the number in your owner’s manual for assistance.

My Washing Machine Fills up After the Final Spin

Defective Water Valve

Don’t restart the wash cycle to attempt to drain the washer as it will likely fill again.

If your washing machine fills up after the final spin, a faulty water valve might be to blame. The valve opens and closes based on direction from the control panel. Yet when the valve breaks, water will continue to flow into the washtub no matter how far along the washing machine is in a particular wash cycle or whether or not the washer is even on. Shut off the washing machine’s main water supply valves, and get the washer serviced.

Blocked Drain

A washing machine drains prior to its final spin. However, if after water drains, it returns during the spin cycle, the drain is likely blocked. Stop the washing machine, and drain the drum using the hose or pipe in the back of the washer. Inspect the wash load for missing articles of clothing that might have become trapped in the middle of the inner washtub and outer tub and entered the drain. Refer to the washing machine’s manual for simple clog removal instructions. Depending on the clog’s location, you probably can remove it yourself.

Simple Clog Removal Tips

To remove a clog from the drain, you’ll need to remove the washing machine’s primary access panel to expose the washer’s main components. Attached to the drum is a rubber hose, which you’ll probably have to detach and eliminate to get a clear view of the drain. Reach into the washing machine’s drain hole, and pull out the clog with your hands or a pair of pliers.

Soap scum and debris from the washing machine can sometimes get trapped in the washing machine’s drain line and prevent water from flowing through it, so water backs up into the washer after it drains occasionally during the final spin. You can clear the debris with a pipe snake obtained from a home improvement store to eliminate obstructions in household plumbing. After you run the snake through the drain line, run warm water into the line to push the now dislodged clog into the home’s main wastewater drain. If you can’t effectively remove the clog on your own, call a plumber to assist you in flushing the drain line.

Here's their guide on how to repair a washer that won't spin.

My washing machine won't spin; how can I fix it?

Here are a few common reasons a washer won't spin:

We'll break each of these issues down in detail shortly. First, you should determine if your washing machine is not able to spin at all, or if it shuts off mid spin-cycle. To find out, you can listen and feel the outside of the washer, or open the lid during the spin cycle (for top-load machines) to see if the drum is in motion. Make sure there's no laundry in the machine while performing this check.

When washers have spin cycle issues, they often won't go through the drain cycle either. So if your washing machine won't spin or drain, the same troubleshooting steps should work.

Your appliances matter. So does your time.

Make an appointment now, and our technicians will get you back up and running as soon as the same day.

Causes for a washer that won't spin properly

The washing machine is too full

When your washing machine is overstuffed, it may fill but not spin. Some washer models have automatic detectors to tell you if you've overfilled your washing machine, but many don't. The machine generally won't recognize the issue until the washer has filled with water. If that's the case, unfortunately, your only solution is to remove some of the soggy clothes.

The load isn't balanced properly

If you're trying to wash only a couple of heavy items, your washing machine may not spin or may not spin effectively. This often occurs when you're washing things like a comforter or shoes. Open the machine and shift the items around to balance the washing machine load, and your washer can spin more effectively. Adding more items to help balance a load can be effective, too, as long it doesn't overfill the machine.

The washer isn't balanced correctly

You'll probably know if your washing machine isn't balanced, because it will make a lot of noise and vibration as it goes through its spin cycle. An uneven surface can cause issues for all sorts of washers, since it allows the machine to rock and move while agitating. Some front-loading washers can even sense if they're not balanced properly, and won't spin as a safety precaution—so if you have a front-loading washer that won't spin, this is one of the first things you should check for. If you find that your washing machine isn't well-balanced, you can generally adjust the washer legs to fix it. Use a level to make sure it's done correctly.

The lid switch isn't working properly

The lid switch determines whether the lid is closed properly and, as a safety feature, is designed to keep your washer from spinning if not. While on most models the washer won't spin at all if the lid switch isn't working, some models will allow the washer to fill but not spin.

If you're dealing with a top-loading washer not spinning, an impaired lid switch is one of the most common causes and should be one of the first things you check, especially if your issue is a top-loading washer that fills and agitates, but doesn't spin properly. You can find the lid switch underneath the lid, on the top of your machine. Check to see if it makes good contact, or if it's bent. You may be able to bend the switch back into shape, or you may need to have it replaced. There are many steps and it's pertinent that you use the correct replacement part, so we recommend reaching out to a washing machine repair professional for help.

The drainage is poor

Normally, your washing machine won't go into a spin cycle until it's been drained. The drainage hose may become clogged with debris from your clothing, or it could be kinked. If the hose is kinked or crushed, it will likely need to be replaced. If it's clogged, you can take a few steps to clean it:

The motor is burnt out

Your washing machine drive motor may have burnt out, preventing the spin cycle from functioning properly. If the drive motor isn't working, your washing machine may have issues mid-cycle when it tries to spin, even though the machine fills and agitates without trouble. Replacing the drive motor is an advanced repair, so if you suspect this is your issue, it's best to call a local washing machine repair technician for assistance.

Issues with the drive belt

If the washer drive belt is broken or falls off of its wheel, the washer may still be able to agitate and make noise, but the drum won't spin around. To check the drive belt, first unplug your washing machine. Then, remove the back of the washer to see if the belt is still on the pulley system. If the belt has slipped off, you may be able to put it back into place to resolve your issue. However, if the belt appears worn or broken, you'll need to purchase and install a new one.

Washing machines can be fairly complicated, so don't risk injury to yourself or your appliance by attempting an advanced fix yourself. If you've tried all our tips to figure out why your washer is not spinning and still can't find a solution, book a repair with an Asurion Expert for help.

6 Reasons Why Your Front Load Washer Won’t Spin

A malfunctioning washer can certainly throw a wrench in the day. So when we find a pile of wet laundry because of a washing machine not spinning properly, a simple chore can become a project. We’ll troubleshoot some reasons why your washer won’t spin from an off-balance load to a faulty tub bearing.

What to Do When Your Front Load Washer Won’t Spin

Though a malfunctioning washer may add some stress to your day, sometimes a simple adjustment can get you back on track. We’ll determine what goes wrong when your front load washer won’t spin and how it can be fixed. Because one thing’s for certain; laundry waits for no one!

#1. Washer Is Off Balance

In order for a washer to spin properly, all four legs must be evenly balanced on the floor. An uneven floor could cause an off-balance washer or the machine’s motion can make its legs uneven over time.

To fix a washer out of balance, consult your owner’s manual to determine how the washer legs can be adjusted. Make sure each leg comes in full contact with the floor so the machine remains level despite any flooring unevenness.

#2. Incorrect Wash Cycle

If you notice your washer not spinning we suggest checking the selected wash cycle. Some washer cycles, like the delicate or hand wash setting, will use a slow spin speed to better protect delicate fabrics. Consequently, you may find more water in the washer tub at the end of these cycles.

If you prefer your wash load to have a standard spin cycle, make sure you’ve selected the right setting for your load.

#3. Washer Load Is Out of Balance

Sometimes it’s not the washer that’s the problem; it’s the heavy load inside. A hefty load of bedding or towels can impede the spin cycle when they clump together in the washer drum. Even if the machine can spin, wet laundry on one side of the drum can lessen its speed and leave clothing wet.

Fortunately, an out of balance load has a quick fix. Pause your washer’s cycle and rearrange laundry so it’s balanced on either side of the washer drum. If this doesn’t do the trick, remove some items and add them to a lighter load later.

#4. Washer Drive Belt Broken

When you find your front load washer not spinning, it’s possible a part may have failed. The drive belt can be a common culprit, as it’s constantly working and moving by connecting the motor to the washtub. This motion can lead to damage and breakage, prohibiting the washtub from spinning. In this case, the drive belt will need to be replaced.

#5. Faulty Washer Door Lock

Your washer door lock has the essential job of preventing leaks by keeping the door closed and locked during wash cycles. If the door isn’t shut correctly, the wash cycle won’t even begin.

However, if the door lock is damaged or the electrical switch that signals the lock is faulty, the door won’t close properly. In this case, your washer won’t spin or begin a wash cycle. If inspection of the door lock reveals damage or multimeter testing of the electrical switch reveals no continuity, the door lock needs replacement.

#6. Defective Washer Tub Bearing

This bearing on the outside of the washer tub helps keep the inner tub spinning smoothly. Sometimes the bearing can be defective and require replacement. As this can be a complex repair, we recommend a professional assessment.

When a washer won’t spin sometimes a simple adjustment will solve the problem. But when you need the expert eyes of a washing machine repair service, Solar Appliance is here to help. Give us a call for fast and professional assistance.

In this case, the drive belt will need to be replaced.

washing machine not spinning properly

FULL SUMMARYDETAILED TROUBLESHOOTINGFIRST MOST LIKELY TO CAUSE WET CLOTHES
If the clothing in your washer is still soaking wet once your washing machine is finished washing, check the following:
Assuming the TUB IS SPINNING but does not get the water out of your clothes..

Washing Machine Drain Hose – Clogged or Bent

If the washer is not spin drying your clothing, check the drain hose on the very back of your washing machine. Make sure the drain hose is not bent therefore restricting water to drain out and leaving your clothing wet even after spin dry mode is complete. It is also a good idea to remove the hose from the drain pump and check the pump and drain hose for any blockages that may restrict water flow.

That May Restrict The Washer To Drain properly

Washer Drain Hose is Positioned Incorrectly

If the drain hose on the back of your washer is too far down or not down far enough in the standpipe, this can cause an issue with proper draining and can cause the washer to not fully drain out the water and therefore your clothing will still be soaking wet after a wash cycle.

Washing Machine Drain Filter or Coin Trap Clogged

When your washer will not spin dry your clothes, the debris filter or coin trap may be blocked. Your washer has a filtering device down and near the pump called a drain filter or a coin trap. This filter grabs all foreign objects that go down and into the drain. These are mostly small objects that are left in the pockets of your clothes such as coins, keys, small socks, pins, paperclips, etc.

The drain filter is accessed on the front bottom of the washer and the coin trap is located behind an access panel. These filtering devices are easy to clean and will help the water to flow when draining the water out therefore getting your clothing spun dry and not soaking wet when washing is complete.

Washing Machine Drain Pump Clogged or Faulty

If your washer will not spin out all water and clothes are still wet, the drain pump might be clogged with debris or possibly faulty. There could be a foreign object that is stuck in the pump and inside the drain hose. Check these areas and remove anything that may be clogging the draining system on your washer. If all areas are clear of debris and no clogs are found. Test to be sure the drain pump is working properly.

Washing Machine Wash Load In Tub or Drum is Out Of Balance

If your washer contains only one large blanket, this will usually cause an imbalance and will not drain out the water from the tub or drum properly so that it can ramp up to a high speed and spin in some circumstances. Always try to “balance” out the tub by adding more or less items so one large item of clothes or blankets is not to one side.

For example, if you are washing one large towel or blanket, it will be on one side of the washer drum or tub and can cause an imbalance therefore making it so the washer cannot drain out the water correctly, by adding in another blanket or towel, the washer has an “even” amount of wash objects in it and can drain out the water therefore getting all the water out of your clothes or other wash articles in the tub.

Rearrange Clothes Or Blankets To Keep Washer Drum or Tub Balanced

Washing Machine Belt – Loose Or Damaged

When your washing machine does not get the water out of your clothing, the belt on the pump or motor may be worn or stretched. If the belt is stretched out, the washer tub will spin but will have a difficult time spinning a large amount of clothing when trying to drain the water out as the belt will slip when the drum is attempting to spin and therefore the drum or tub will not spin fast enough.

This causes wet clothes after a wash cycle is completed. Make sure you check the belt or the direct drive system for wear and tear. Replace the washer drive belt or direct drive motor coupler if worn, cracked, damaged, broken, or stretched.

Washing Machine Lid Switch Assembly or Door Lock Switch Assembly

Your washer will not drain at all if the the lid switch is faulty. This is a common issue for a washer that WILL NOT DRAIN AT ALL. The lid switch or door lock assembly may be inoperable from a mechanical fault or an electrical fault. TO find out if the lid switch or door lock assembly is faulty, simply use a meter and test for continuity.

Also check to be sure the lid switch or the door lock assembly is in the correct position and mounted securely. If the lid switch or the door switch assembly are not connected electrically possibly from vibration or rough usage, they need to be reconnected using the wiring harness.

Check to see if one of the wire harnesses have fallen off or has become loose. If the lid switch or door switch assembly is found to be cracked, broken, or has no continuity, the part will need to be replaced.

Not Spinning or Wet Clothes at the End of the Cycle - Top Load Washer

Possible Solutions

Were you washing bedding, sheets, or bulky items on a Cycle other than Bulky or Sheets?

This washer is designed to use the Bulky or Sheets/Bedding cycle for bulky clothing items or bedding. When washing these types of clothing items (including heavy coats or blankets), do not use the Normal cycle or a Rapid Wash cycle (on some models). Clothing performance may not be ideal if using these cycles.

Was there a power failure?

If the power failed during the spin cycle, it's possible the washer did not ramp-up to full spin speed.

Did you receive an error code?

Click the Troubleshooting option above for Error Codes

Did you use the "Add a Garment" feature?

Only add clothing items while the "Add a Garment" indicator light is on. Pausing the machine later in the cycle could cause limitations on the washer running at maximum spin speeds. When Add Garment is lit, you may pause the cycle, open the lid, and add items. Touch and hold the START/PAUSE button to start the cycle again.

Is water standing in the tub?

Check drain hose for proper installation.  Use the U-shaped drain hose form on the drain hose and securely attach to drainpipe (standpipe) or tub.  Check that only 4.5" (113 mm) of the drain hose is in the drainpipe (standpipe).  Do not tape over the drain opening.

U-shaped drain hose form and drain hose installation

The drainpipe (standpipe) height requirements are 96" (244 cm) maximum and 39" (99 cm) minimum.  Your washer will not be able to adequately pump the water out of the appliance if the drainpipe (standpipe) exceeds 96" (244 cm).  In this case, the water may flow back into the washer.

Make sure the drain hose is not kinked or clogged.  Straighten the hose for adequate water flow.  Remove any blockage from the drainpipe of the utility sink.

CLICK HERE for more information on drain hose installation.

Is the load unbalanced or overloaded?

The wash load must be balanced and not tightly packed. A large unbalanced load could result in a reduced spin speed and wet clothes at the end of the cycle.

CLICK HERE for more information on loading your washer

Is your washer level?

The washer must be level.  If not, the load may become unbalanced, causing the machine not to spin correctly.  This can also cause the washer to have excessive noise and/or vibration, especially during the Spin cycle.

CLICK HERE for more information on leveling your washer

Was Low Spin or No Spin selected?

Cycles with lower spin speeds remove less water than cycles with high spin speeds. Use the recommended cycle/speed spin for your garment.

To remove extra water in the load, select Drain & Spin. The load may need to be rearranged to allow even distribution of the load in the basket.

If Low Spin or No Spin was selected, the washer might not remove enough water from the load.

Installation Issues

If your brand-new GE washer runs loud, it’s possible that it wasn’t installed properly. This is confusing and definitely frustrating, but not uncommon. The first thing to look for is whether the shipping rod or bolts were removed before installation.

Uneven Leveling Legs

If you have a GE washing machine making loud banging noise on spin cycle, it may not be resting evenly on the floor. Be sure that your washing machine is level with the ground. An unlevel washer can develop noise issues and cause damage to the machine.

Check your unit by resting a carpenter’s level on the top. If you find that it’s not even, you’ll need to adjust the leveling legs on the bottom of the unit. Each leg can be screwed in or out to raise or lower one side of the machine. Adjust as needed until your washer is level.

Washer Overloaded or Unbalanced

Today’s front-load washing machines offer powerful cleaning and high-capacity, but even they have limits. A GE washer making noise during spin cycle may be overloaded with too many items, causing it to struggle to turn properly and even stop spinning altogether. Be sure to follow your model’s use and care manual on the weight and capacity limits of your unit.

Top-loading washers are also susceptible to becoming unbalanced when overstuffed or loaded improperly. Distribute items evenly around the wash tub so that one side isn’t more weighed down than the other. If left unchecked, unbalanced loads can lead to noisy part malfunctions and breakdowns.

Broken Belt or Pulley

The tub on your GE washer spins thanks to a motor that turns using a drive belt and pulley system. These parts can fail quickly if the washer is constantly being overloaded or becoming unbalanced. To inspect them, you’ll need to access the inside of the washer cabinet.

Start by inspecting the drive belt for physical damage. If it’s frayed, broken, or has become loose, it should be replaced. Also, take a close look at the pulley that the belt uses to spin. If you find that it’s cracked, bent, or otherwise damaged, you’ll have to install a new drive pulley.

Following these tips should fix your GE washer making noise during spin cycle. If you’re still hearing abnormal sounds though, be sure to call the washer repair Frisco pros at Callahan’s Appliance right away.

Attached to the drum is a rubber hose, which you’ll probably have to detach and eliminate to get a clear view of the drain.

Make sure the drain hose is not kinked or clogged.  Straighten the hose for adequate water flow.  Remove any blockage from the drainpipe of the utility sink.

You may expect your washer’s spin cycle to continue uninterrupted until it is finished. However, if you notice your washer occasionally pauses during the cycle, it isn’t necessarily cause for concern. Strange Sounds

You may hear strange sounds during your washer’s spin cycle that seem to indicate a problem with your machine. However, some noises are part of the spin cycle’s normal operating procedure.
