    My trailer project

Every summer we make several 6+ hour trips to my parent's riverhouse. Usually this means that the Expedition is stuffed to the ceiling with knee boards, wake boards, suit cases, a dog, two kids, my wife and I and sometimes my grandmother. I would put a bike rack on the back then drag a trailer behind it with a Jet Ski. I hated this as it made for an uncomfortable trip and a overpacked car that you can't see out the back of. My jet-ski trailer has small wheels which always made me nervous about the bearings and it is only a single ski trailer. I started looking for a boat trailer that I could convert to dual jet-ski with a deck in front. After looking for a few months I found this:

It's all aluminium and galvanized steel with torsion suspension and hydraulic surge brakes. A perfect start for my project.

I started laying out boards and taking measurements so that I could see how everything would fit:

Once that was figured out I started building the deck:

The bunks are just made from pressure treated 2x4s and 2x6s. I made metal brackets out of 1/4" stainless to attach them to the trailer frame. The winch mounts were a bit of a challenge jet ski trailer with bike rack build. I ended up using 1/4" aluminum C channel reinforced with steel plates on either side:

The trailer also got all new LED lights, reflective tape, new tires, new brake pistons, new brake lines, new jack, and a new brake surge actuator.

I'll probably incorporate a bike rack into it as well as a mount for kayaks, wake boards, etc.

Here it is all finished up with both skis on it:

I usually dread the drive to the riverhouse but I'm actually excited about it this time to try the trailer out.

Looks good! I'm about to start on a custom trailer soon. Do you have any thoughts on the pressure treated wood and aluminum corrosion issue?

The corrosion issue is very real, jet ski trailer with bike rack. I have been contacted by a few customers to do repairs where contractors used aluminum flashing where their deck meets the house. The aluminum had turned to dust in just a few years. Search for solutions online.

You may want to consider one of the composite plastic decking material, Trex, Azek.

Or consider expanded metal mesh as a lighter, more durable alternative to wood or plastic.

Fabrication looks good, just be aware of the tongue weight when you load your trailer.

2, 1998 TS 770 L, restored and running great as of July 2019 (NO THANKS to the person at SBT, who put the WRONG crankshaft bearing into the rebuilt engine I got from them)

I honestly didn't know about the corrosion issue until I saw the earlier reply about it. I could pull up those deck boards and put some 1/8" rubber strips between them and the alum. As for the bunks they don't touch the alum so they should be fine. The 4x4 I put across the back is bolted to a galvanized square tube so that should be fine also.

Thanks for the replies and compliments. I'm aware of the tongue weight and the issues it can cause. I actually moved the axles forward about a foot to reduce it some. It's kinda light with just the skis(maybe 70lbs) but I'm sure it will go up quite significantly when I load the deck.

This trailer will most definitely be tested before I make a 6 hour trip with it and I may even get it inspected just so I don't get bugged about it not having a sticker. I forgot to mention that I did pull all the wheels apart and re-pack the bearings with new grease.

Bike Carrier while towing boat

I figured if anyone knew the answer to this question, it has to be someone on this forum. I have a 2009 Suburban and tow a 2010 212X. We are coming camping in 10 days (time sensitive request), and my kids have informed me they want to take their bikes, probably just two bikes for this trip. I do own a Thule 5-bike apex carrier which connects to the hitch receiver and extends about 43" beyond the bolt. Which begs me to answer. how do I safely transport these bikes???

A few different options have presented themselves, none of the options which I love so far.

1) Buy a double receiver, jet ski trailer with bike rack, and use my existing Thule Apex 5 bike carrier rack. The problem is that it would appear it will extend to far beyond the truck and either come in contact with the boat or at least potentially affect it when backing up or turning. Jet ski trailer with bike rack of a really good double receiver is about $100.

2) Fit a hitch receiver behind on the trailer and use my Thule bike carrier beyind the boat. dinuba shooting 2017 after looking at the trailer, this doesn't really appear to be a solid option.

3) Buy a trunk-mounted carrier that also opens wider and allows for use on a hatch. I really don't like the idea of straps running everywhere and potentially scratching the hatch everytime I install the carrier.

4) Buy a roof-rack bike system, but not sure how easy that would be to get a bike on the top of the suburban, jet ski trailer with bike rack. With the two kids bikes, it may be okay, but I also don't want to buy something specifically for this trip that I will never use again.

In the future I can see taking the boat on trips, where we may want to take five bikes as well. Someone here has to have crossed this bridge successfully already! My existing Thule Apex 5 and the double receiver I considered are posted below. Thoughts???

Thread: Bike issue and double pwc trailer

Maybe someone knows a company? We have a heavy duty, double galvanized trailer. The issue is, when we take road trips, we like to take our 2 bicycles. Our SUV is lifted so a rooftop bike rack (which we have tried) will work but we need to take a long a freakin 6ft aluminum ladder, which takes up space and using the ladder is difficult to use when placing and retrieving the bikes, especially if the ground is uneven. The 2nd option which we currently use, is a Yakima rack that straps to the noosa touch football cargo door. Unfortunately, this has added a lot of stress to the rear door and now we're facing having to replace the rear door shocks. On top of that, the sheer weight of our 2 mountain bikes has literally bent the Yakima rack.

I would love a solution where we could put them on our pwc trailer between the jack stand and the bow stops (if possible). Or we could replace our jack stand and use the space from the bow stop going up to the ball mount.
Just wondering if anyone knows a solution?

Thanks!!!

  1. Something tells me you got paid by adobe or get something in return, it's quite easy to tell, you don't recommend OTHER paid softwares like Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, Wondershare Filmora. You TELL they won't have full functionality, making it sound like creative cloud is a big deal, etc. You assume people don't comment nor read the comments-section?
