It happens all the time. An agent goes from one company to another and brings his clients with him. In the case of baseball agent Josh Yates, he is on to his third company in the span of roughly five years.
Yates began his career as a baseball agent with the company CSMG, which had its baseball division along with its coaches, sfx baseball clients, broadcast, legends and marketing divisions acquired by Octagon in Yates had left CSMG prior to much of the company being eaten up by Octagon. He had left the company to join the strong baseball division at SFX.
Fast forward a few years and Yates is on the move again. According to an SFX spokesperson, sfx baseball clients, Yates left SFX on January 3, to join ACES, which is owned by Sam and Seth Levinson. Yates has taken Jon Lester, Mike Adams, and Felix Pie with him in addition to some Minor League players.

Jhonny Peralta Leaves ACES For SFX
Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta has become the latest player to leave Sam and Seth Levinson's ACES agency, reports casinoextra.fr's Jason Beck. As he approaches free agency, Peralta will be represented by Diego Bentz of SFX.
Since beinginvestigated by Major League Baseballin relation to the PED suspension of Melky Cabrera, ACES has seen several high-profile clients leave for other representation. ItlostNelson Cruzjust before the Rangers outfielder like Peralta took a fifty-game suspension relating to the Biogenesis scandal. Peralta, 31, had been enjoying one of the best years of his career before his suspension, posting a // slash line in plate appearances and making his second All-Star game. The Tigers are reportedly still debating whether to bring Peralta back as a reserve in the post-season, but have no plans to bench recent acquisition Jose Iglesias if they do. (As Beck noted earlier today, Peralta could even see time in left field.)
In either event, Detroit seems set to move on with Iglesias as the everyday shortstop next season, making it likely that Peralta will find a new employer after the bamboo surf rack. His new agency, SFX, also represents Tigers star Miguel Cabrera, Diamondbacks first bagger Paul Goldschmidt, Red Sox sluggerDavid Ortiz, and a long list of other ballplayers. Itwill be tasked with convincing clubs that the suspension was a one-time mistake and focusing on Peralta's strong campaign prior to his time off. While Peralta's value has unquestionably taken a hit, some organization will surely see a lot of potential upside in a low-risk deal for the veteran.

The men in uniform are only a small portion of the team that puts on America’s pastime. HE asks Cesar Sanchez how he got into Hispanic baseball representation, what the view from the inside is like, and what it takes to be a successful agent.
How did you break into sports agency work? Did you have a baseball background?
Just like a lot of other little kids, baseball was something I dreamed of every single day. I played it through high school, and that’s where my playing career ended. When I got to college, I knew there were career opportunities within sports and made that my main focus. I landed an internship my senior year with Fox Sports Latin America, but when that was over, I learned the harsh reality that there aren’t many job openings in the sports world. I went back to school for my MBA and tapped into some of my old networks to get my first job in professional sports managing sponsorships for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
What has been your most memorable negotiation, sfx baseball clients, and why does it stand out?
The first deal I made with SFX Baseball (now Relativity Baseball, a division of Relativity Sports and Relativity Media). It teamed up Pedro Martinez and Gillette. It was a tarte rhinestone eyelash curler partnership with a future Hall of Famer, and, because it was my first with SFX, I was excited and sfx baseball clients. My biggest fear was that Pedro would change his mind. You always get those butterflies because you’re dealing with human capital. At some point, it’s out of m&d lacrosse club control, and you can only cross your fingers. But in this case it made sense for both sides, and I was able to marry their interests.
Were you ever starstruck early in your career, or even now, working with professional athletes?
Not with an athlete, sfx baseball clients. Part of that is in my business training. It was hammered into us at school that you have to respect that line between performer and client. Even though I grew up a fan of the game, I never had a favorite player. I was a bigger fan of the essence of the game and competition.
What makes a successful agent?
Being prepared, being informed, and being persistent. At its core, this is a sales job. You’re out trying to find deals. You’re going to fail sfx baseball clients lot more than you succeed. You have to understand your client, talk to as many people as you can in the industry, and study what companies are doing with their marketing and advertising. Ultimately, a good agent knows how to create value and sell that.
Because you work with specifically Hispanic major leaguers, have you found that clientele poses any specific challenges in the American sponsorship market?
I deal with clients from the Dominican Republic to Cuba to Venezuela, and I always say one of the few things they have in common is that they play baseball. Otherwise, they have their own personalities, priorities, and personal lives. Language and assimilating to American culture will always be challenges, but there are bigger obstacles I face that have nothing to do with their heritage.
What are some of those?
Time management is one. These guys are playing baseball every single day. You don’t want them to lose focus of their real jobs—they’ll make a lot more money as athletes than they will as endorsers—so managing their time off the field is key. Another aspect is that there are only a finite number of companies who want to use athletes as endorsers. Combating that is a combination of fishing where the fish are, so to speak, but also being creative to figure out which companies can benefit from these players’ personalities.
What would you say is your trademark as an agent?
I like keeping the players informed throughout the whole process unless they tell me otherwise. Some guys just want to know where to be and what to do. I like knowing the player knows what he’s getting himself into. I involve them in a lot of the process. If I know I have a legitimate offer, sfx baseball clients, I’ll bring it to them and get their thoughts. Before I close the deal, sfx baseball clients, I make sure they’re percent on the same page as the sponsor.
Who have been your mentors in this profession? Is it the kind of career that you work your way up to, learning the sfx baseball clients as you go?
The biggest influence in my career as a marketing agent has been Fern Cuza. He’s a pioneer who I’ve been able to tap into. He has guided me along the way, dealing with sports personalities and the challenges that come with that. If there were a blueprint to this career, there would be a lot of successful agents rather than the few who are notorious. I’ve learned you have to be able to manipulate your strategy every once in a while to find success, sfx baseball clients. You have to be flexible and adapt to sfx baseball clients tactics that yield results.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
It’s baseball. It’s something that I love and feel blessed to do. I’m fortunate that I’m able to do a job that I love waterproof wigs for swimming that allows me to rub elbows with some of the people I grew up admiring as a kid.

SFX Buys Bronner, Gilhooley Concern
NEW YORK (AP) _ In a move that gives it about one in six major league baseball players, SFX Entertainment said Thursday it had agreed to buy the business of agents Jim Bronner and Bob Gilhooley.
Last year, SFX bought the businesses of baseball agents Alan and Randy Hendricks, plus the business of Arn Tellem, who represents baseball and basketball players.
SFX, sfx baseball clients, which in bought out Michael Jordan’s agent, David Falk, becomes by far the largest agent in baseball, with a roster that includes many of the sports top players.
Bronner and Gilhooley, whose company Speakers of Sport represents the most players of any baseball agent group, currently are negotiating a record $ million, eight-year contract for Detroit outfielder Juan Gonzalez, the and American League MVP.
They also represent Boston pitcher Pedro Martinez ( NL and Sfx baseball clients Cy Young), Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera ( World Series MVP), Larry Walker ( NL MVP), sfx baseball clients, Moises Alou, Andres Galarraga, Vladimir Guerrero and Jim Thome.
While SFX represents about 16 percent of players on man rosters, its percentage of man rosters during a season probably is greater.
In acquiring the Hendricks’ company, SFX got clients that include Roger Clemens (five-time AL Cy Young Award winner) and controversial reliever Jon Rocker, in addition to Chuck Knoblauch ( AL Rookie of the Year), Andy Pettitte, Ben Grieve ( AL Rookie), Ryan Klesko, Al Mozambique surf season and Kerry Wood ( NL Rookie).
Tellem provided SFX a group that includes Albert Belle and Nomar Garciaparra, plus about 35 basketball clients.
In all, the three agents’ companies represent about 25 percent of the players with more than three years of major league service, sfx baseball clients, the groups eligible for salary arbitration and free agency. Those service classes receive more than 90 percent of baseball’s payroll, about $ billion last season.
