CHAPMANVILLE — The season brings optimism for the Chapmanville Regional High School football team, and hopefully, sissonville middle school football, a more normal grid campaign.

The Tigers went in last year’s chaotic COVID disrupted season and scheduling free-for-all which saw Chapmanville play two teams (North Marion, Lincoln County) which were not on the original schedule.

Back to normalcy begins on Friday night as Chapmanville travels to Sissonville to take on the Indians in the season opener.

Chapmanville did not play Sissonville sissonville middle school football year as Week 1 was canceled and the Tigers and Indians were not able to reschedule.

Sissonville leads Chapmanville in the all-time series and have won the last north richland hills youth baseball meetings and seven out of the last eight.

The Indians beat the Tigers,in the last meeting sissonville middle school football the two schools in

Kickoff for the Cardinal Conference clash is set for 7 pm at Sissonville’s Joe Eddie Cowley Field. Most conference games are slated to start at 7 this fall, with the exception of Scott’s home games. The league encouraged all teams to kick off at 7 this fall by verbal, but not binding, agreement.

Chapmanville second-year coach James Barker said the Tigers are ready to go.

“We are excited to play a regular schedule this year,” Barker said. “I think tennis middleton ma something that our kids and our program missed last year. The Sissonville game is always special to us. We played them at Laidley Field two years ago. We look forward to this game.”

The Tigers had just one preseason game in a scrimmage with Wyoming East on Aug. 13 at home, sissonville middle school football. Chapmanville’s Aug. 20 preseason game with Clay County was canceled. Instead, the Tigers held an inter-squad scrimmage.

“I thought the scrimmage with East went well,” Barker said. “The good is not always as good as you think and the bad is not always as bad as you think. We made the corrections that we needed to make and worked on some things. We had an inter-squad scrimmage in that second week with our own kids and we got the play clocks out and went up in the booth and did what we needed to do to prepare for a real game. We felt good about it because we feel like we’ve got up to 30 kids that are ready to play varsity football.”

CRHS is led by QB Brody Dalton, running back Caleb Whitt and a host of others who are back from last year’s team.

Sissonville is coming off last year’s season in which the Indians were in the regular season and ended up falling to Elkins in the first round of the Class AA playoffs as the No. 1 seed.

The Indians poured on the offense last year, averaging 42 points and yards of total offense per game.

Sissonville was hit hard by graduation, however, with the loss of 1,yard rusher Dylan Griffith and QB Jackson Foster, who garden city youth lacrosse website for 1, yards of offense.

The Indians have a first-year coach in Chad Lovejoy, who takes over for departed head mentor Marc Wilson, sissonville middle school football, who took a coaching job in Ohio.

Barker said the Indians will give CRHS a tough challenge.

“Coach Lovejoy is doing a great job,” Barker said. “They will be running the same offensive scheme. He was their Offensive Coordinator under Coach Wilson. There’s a lot of similarities to what they have done in year’s past. Defensively, they are very aggressive and very strong. They will make you make plays to beat them. We feel like sissonville middle school football are pretty strong up front. They tackle well and are aggressive. It’s always a tough first game for both teams. We hope to take care of the football and get out of there with a win.”

Lovejoy will look to middle linebacker and senior four-year starter Jacob Carter for leadership on the defensive side of the ball, sissonville middle school football. Carter recorded 51 tackles last year and will also play on the offensive line at right tackle.

Lovejoy sissonville middle school football he expects his defense to lead the way this year.

“We’re 8ft by 6ft football goal necessarily designed to score 40 points a game this year,” Lovejoy told the Charleston Gazette-Mail. “We’ll probably not be as up tempo, because of that. We’ll try to control the ball a little bit more and realize that punting is not necessarily a bad thing, sissonville middle school football. Last year, sissonville middle school football, we kind of felt that punting was something we shouldn’t do very often, because we felt like we were pretty loaded offensively.’’

The Indians do have wide receiver Braeden Murray back.

“Offensively, we’re pretty much the same,’’ Lovejoy said. “We’ll be simple, but have multiple formations.”

Senior Brody Thompson and sophomore lefty Ethan Taylor are the Sissonville quarterbacks. Thompson is a transfer from George Washington, but originally hails from Sissonville. He played wide receiver for the Patriots the last two year, catching 16 passes for yards and three touchdowns.

Lovejoy had served as the Indians’ offensive coordinator the past three seasons, sissonville middle school football, during which time they averaged more than 32 points per game.

The year-old Lovejoy is a graduate of Nitro, where he played slot and corner back on some of the Wildcats’ most successful teams, a stretch that led into their Class AAA championship team.

Lovejoy said he hoped to build on some of the successes he and Wilson had put together in recent years.

CRHS opens the season with a pair of road games.

The home opener is Week 3 vs. Winfield.

Chapmanville hopes to get its new locker room facility/football building at Tiger Stadium done in time by then.

Friday’s game will be broadcast live on WCHS-TV as part of the weekly Friday Night Rivals Series.

History[edit]

Getting started[edit]

In the early s, teams claimed state titles by virtue of their records against other WV schools, sissonville middle school football. Some of the major newspapers would have input as well.[2] Often coaches would contact one another and arrange championship games themselves. This system may have been flawed, but it was what most WV schools used for at least 33 years.

Separate was not equal[edit]

Before Brown vs. Board of Education inhigh school football was segregated just like the schools, sissonville middle school football. About 45 colored schools existed in WV. More than 25 black school football programs existed in West Virginia during segregation. InWV black leaders came together and formed what would become the West Virginia Athletic Union (WVAU), which would govern high school athletic championships in WV for the African American students. The WVAU ceased to exist in as only two schools remained in the organization.

Private schools[edit]

Prior to most private schools did not participate in the WVSSAC or its football playoff system. Nearly all the private schools that fielded football teams were Catholic, so the WVCHSAA was formed. In Catholic leadership began a championship game process sissonville middle school football their schools. The West Virginia Catholic State Football Champion was crowned until the season. Wheeling Central Catholic joined the WVSSAC in By the WVCHSAA numbers were so low the organization was dissolved.

WVSSAC takes the reins[edit]

Tie breakers[edit]

Prior to season, sissonville middle school football, games played against teams in a higher class were not considered in the point system if the smaller school lost. Beforeif two teams tied for the last playoff spot they were both removed from the playoff. This happened in when Charleston and Welch both tied for the #2 playoff position. #1 Buckhannon-Upshur was awarded the AAA title without a game. Inin single A, both Meadow Bridge and Rivesville finished the regular season 10–0–0, sissonville middle school football tied for the #4 playoff spot. They were both eliminated and #1 Wirt was given a bye. There is now a tie break system for teams whose playoff points average out the same.

Location[edit]

Championship games were played in a variety of locations over the years, but that sissonville middle school football in From sissonville middle school football the three WV Football Championship games were played at Laidley Field, now University of Charleston Stadium at Laidley Field in Charleston. The West Virginia State High School Football Championship games have been played at Wheeling Island Stadium since

Eras and classes[edit]

The different eras of West Virginia State Football Championships are listed below: A small number of West Virginia high schools sponsored football teams prior tobut the first known game played between two West Virginia schools occurred in when Huntington High met Charleston High.[2] The first claimed state title that has been discovered, so far, was Fairmont Senior in [3] It is not yet certain if state titles were claimed every season between and

  • – Prior to WVSSAC or formal sportswriters vote: Single-class system, games arranged by individual teams, & Fairmont Senior.[4][5][6]
  • – WV Athletic Association (known as the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission after ) formed to help regulate high school athletics in WV. State football champions were still selected by schools arranging games and sports writers' input.[7]
  • – Colored School State Champions. Before the historic Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling, inschools, and football games, were segregated. African Americans were forced to play in their own league. The West Virginia Athletic Union governed African American athletics during this time.
  • – Single-class system. Champion was named by the West Virginia Sportswriters Association.
  • – Two-class system. Schools were placed in Class A or B based on enrollment.
  • – Three-class system, with Class AA, Class A or B based on enrollment.
  • –present: Three-class system, based on enrollment, with Classes AAA, AA and A.[8]

From tothere were only two classes; Class A (big schools) and Class B shooting in portsmouth va today schools). From tothere were three classes; Class AA (big schools), Class A (medium-sized schools) and Class B (small schools). From to the present there have been three classes as well, however the names have been changed to: Class AAA (big schools), Class AA (medium-sized schools) and Class A (small schools).

During the season Williamson and Magnolia arranged a state title game. Williamson defeated Magnolia 14– However, after accusations on both sides of ineligible players the WVAA (now known as the WVSSAC) stepped in and forced both teams to forfeit all their games.[2] Doug Huff, sissonville middle school football, one of WV's leading sports historians, left both schools in his book, History of Sports in West Virginia, so this author left them on this list as well.

[edit]

It is almost surreal to think that, not that many years ago, African American students were barred from playing football with White Americans. This changed in with a Supreme Court decision, sissonville middle school football, Brown vs. Board of Education, overturning school segregation. The black school athletics were governed by the WV Athletic Union but did not receive as consistent media attention as their white counterparts, sissonville middle school football. This makes research difficult. Information on the Colored State Football Champions has been provided by Robert Bonner, WV high school football researcher. More will sissonville middle school football entered as the information becomes available.
