In 2018 Sony Interactive Entertainment reached out to Zemoga with the need to design and build a product to allow them to participate more aggressively in the esports space. Together, we’ve brought to life a destination site that welcomes and brings value to both competitive gamers and more casual videogame enthusiasts.

Overview

The challenge

Sony PlayStation is a powerful brand in the gaming industry. Our mission was to leverage the existing brand’s positioning and, based on that, create a hub that caters to all types of gamers out there.

From the get-go, we were aware that one of the main existing assets was PlayStation’s tournament infrastructure —a console-oriented solution that helps users worldwide participate in tournaments remotely.

With that in mind, we knew we needed to craft a web-based product in which curated content could co-exist with the friendliest possible tournament-oriented experience.

Our approach

Our product and technology teams worked in tandem for 4 weeks in a discovery phase that was the foundation for the MVP and subsequent phases.

From a technical perspective, we spent time with Sony’s technology teams to understand the existing environments we’d need to integrate with. In the end, we had enough information to present our recommended technical architecture.

From a product point of view, we focused on learning as much as possible about the business, the users, the PlayStation ecosystem, and the esports space in general. Then, in collaborative sessions, we defined a design problem, mapped user journeys, and ideated to find solutions and identify opportunities.

Product strategy and design

A hub for hardcore and casual gamers

In our Spark process, we learned how important it was to design for casuals and pros. We needed to craft a site for users eager to engage in tournaments and those who just want to watch others play.

The experience is divided between Play, Watch and Learn, allowing users to access quickly the part of the experience they’re likely to enjoy the most.

Embracing MVP thinking to the fullest

Being involved long-term has allowed us to define and work towards a vision we’re not forced to realize in 6 months. We launched our MVP in 2019 and then focused on learning as much as we could from that. Based on data and user feedback, we’ve continued to introduce a mix of improvements and new functionality from our product backlog.

A shift in the content strategy

Making tournaments available in over 80 countries

The product team has found that tournaments are the most popular aspect of the product, so we’ve focused on extending and improving the features associated with that component. We’ve also helped the Sony globalize tournaments, making competitions available to more than 80 countries and 9 languages.

Content

Content that evolves and adapts to our users’ interests

Launching the MVP was vital for the team to validate and refine the role of content in the experience. After that first release, user feedback and usage data showed how much users preferred video over long-form articles.

We also saw how much users tend to focus on just one or two games, making personalization a priority. In the current version of the site, tutorials, competitions, and broadcasts are recommended based on preferences. We’ve also introduced filters, empowering users to control what they see based on what they like.

Given the traffic that a site like this one drives, we had to “step up the game” in terms of infrastructure, security, telemetry, monitoring and distribution. Our audience expected the site to look good, but more than anything, they wanted it to feel good.”

Zemoga and the PlayStation team have a long relationship based on a perfect mix of both sides’ strengths. After our first release, we’ve continued to push updates that make the product more robust and more aligned with our users’ preferences.

We keep learning from this audience, identifying opportunities, and coming up with creative ideas that lead to an even better product. We’re incredibly excited to be part of the team behind one of the main hubs for fans of competitive gaming around the world.

New Sony Patent Could Change Esports Forever

Sony just filed a patent that could change the ways players interact in online gaming. Filed October 19, the patent proposed "a method for displaying a video game to spectators [that] includes receiving votes from spectators to remove a player from a video game." In other words, viewers would be able to watch an esports game and vote for players to be temporarily benched, or perhaps removed entirely from the match. The patent noted that there could be "visual cues" to indicate that a player had been removed from the game and to explain why that player was booted.

The patent explored many different avenues a viewer could hypothetically evict a player from an online game, indicating that Sony likely hasn't settled on the fine details of how such a system would work and wanted to cover all of its options. Some of the various methods outlined in the patent involved spectators voting to remove a certain player, with a 60% majority needed to take action. Other methods proposed attributing more voting power to viewers who had extensive experience in a certain game. For example, someone who had achieved certain ranks in a game would have a vote that weighed a bit more than someone who had never picked up a controller. The vote would still, in that scenario, need to reach a 60% majority to kick someone out. That being said, one option in particular had fans concerned about the future of spectator involvement in esports.

Sony is taking its entrance into eSports quite seriously with patents for expansive tournament systems and betting

PlayStation 4's Tournament mode may receive a beefy overhaul on the new console

Sony threw its hat into the ring of the eSports world earlier this year with the acquisition of the largest fighting game tournament in the world, the Evolution Championship Series, and it appears as though they don't plan on stopping there.

The makers of PlayStation have filed patents that would allow them to create an extensive tournament system on their consoles and maybe beyond as well as features to place real bets on eSports matches.

One the tournaments side of things, Sony's patent may help create an expansive suite of features available to organizers, developers and players that would be more advanced than anything else on the market currently.

Using the proposed system, would allow pretty much anyone to set up and run events seemingly easier than ever before thanks to a bunch of proposed automated features across one game or a multitude of titles.

For example, brackets and tournament seeding could be generated using in-game ranking systems or other parameters set up by organizers with the ability to send out invites to players automatically who meet the criteria for an event.

Matches and statistics could be logged and updated in real time to update brackets and standings using data from the game itself without need for players to report results.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect included in the patent is the means to automatically make highlights and start streams of interesting matches / interactions as they happen by way of the systems looking at players and their actions.

The PlayStation 4 has had its own Tournament mode feature for a few years now though it's not obviously nearly as deep in the feature pool as what the patent lists, so these may indicate some of Sony's plans they wish to implement at some point on the PlayStation 5, which currently doesn't have the mode at all.

These tournaments could even expand beyond the PlayStation ecosystem considering it uses the language of "gaming network platform" and not specifically the PlayStation Network while also making mention of PCs and other devices.

Sony also filed a patent in 2019 that was only published last month which would allow viewers of livestreamed eSports events to place bets on matches in real time using real money, virtual currency like Bitcoin or even in-game content / digital rights.

Odds for wagers placed would be calculated using machine learning based on data of the history of the players involved and their current performances.

This is not a guarantee that all or any of these features / systems will ever see the light of day for consumers since they do still remain only patents though they do point to Sony's continued interest in getting further involved with eSports and competitive gaming.

If these tournament features do end up becoming a reality, however, it will almost certainly have an impact on the competitive fighting game landscape and how events are organized in general.

Sony Patents Its Own Esports Betting System

Recently discovered documents from 2019 reveal Sony has patented its own eSports betting system which will allow players to bet real money.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has patented its own eSports betting system, according to some recently discovered documents from 2019. At the time of writing, Sony has not implemented its system (nor announced any plans to) but by holding the patent the company is hanging on to the possibility.

This patent is just the latest Sony foray to come to light; a few weeks back it was revealed that Sony patented an AI to mimic player behavior. The video game company has been incredibly proactive in the last few months, with various ambitious deals and patents commandeering the news cycle, and now it appears that it is happening again.

It was recently reported by Patent Scope (courtesy of VGC) that Sony filed patents for its own proprietary eSports betting platform. According to the patent, the platform would use prior data of professional players and/or teams to determine the odds of one or more bets, and then present those bets to players. The patent says that these bets, "can include straightforward bets on one side or the other winning the simulation; total and individual point scores; over-under bets," or can be a wide array of more specific bets, "such as whether a character will be 'killed' in the next X minutes."

Sony's platform would accept/payout various forms of currency, such as money or bitcoin, but could also include game assets, digital rights, and virtual currency. The full patent includes much more information that shows how deep Sony's propositions can get, giving bettors a slew of propositions to place bets on, which would add to the rapidly rising trend of eSports betting.

Since the patents were originally granted (back in 2019), a report has since been published, claiming that eSports betting was causing a gambling epidemic among young people, yet the practice remains widespread across various competitive gaming competitions. In fact, gambling in and around video games has been increasingly lucrative — to the ire of players.

For instance, back in April, it was revealed that EA was incentivizing FIFA players to buy more loot boxes, at the expense of the game's other modes. That story was just one such example, but in reality, the practice is present in other franchises as well. Various governments around the world have at least announced investigations into loot boxes and video game gambling as a whole, while other countries like Belgium have flat-out banned loot boxes and other forms of gambling in games. Perhaps this growing pushback is why Sony has not yet utilized its eSports betting platform, but who is to say that this will be the case forever.

A new patent from Sony could make the live experience of online events more immersive and accessible for many at-home viewers.

A new patent by Sony could pave the way for a whole new type of viewing experience for eSports events and streamers that can implement their crowds directly into the show. This might be coming a little late in a year where keeping eSports events entirely digital has been a necessity, but it could still have a huge effect on keeping viewers tuning in from home invested in future competitions.

The patent also appears to be another attempt by Sony to push VR forward again as the hardware developer prepares to introduce a new version of PSVR through the PS5. Although, it does look like this new feature will also be available for players using a regular screen and controller as well, with the best experience coming through VR.

According to the patent, Sony is looking to give fans a way to place a simulation of themselves into a virtual space in order to not only watch an event but to also create a virtual audience. This could work in combination with a recent Sony patent that allows players to choose from multiple viewpoints when watching an online event, essentially putting the power of the broadcast room at their fingertips. The change this new concept brings is letting players have their individual experience be added to a broadcast that could make the viewer feel like they are present in the live audience.

Along with the ability to move around, or sometimes be automatically guided to the most interesting aspects of an event, there are also a few buffers to either report or keep away from other disruptive fans. If another viewer is especially distracting, it looks like Sony will let others pay to have someone moved away from their section of the audience. This same feature can also be used to move the viewer around, to either get the best view or to avoid toxic behavior, even when viewing live eSports events that aren't built around the same type of online experience utilized in the last year.

The major idea behind the patent seems to be grouping up members of an audience together in different demographics based on whatever factors might apply to the event in question. This type of digital audience might even have further uses for everything from professional sports to a more general streaming experience. With all of the moving parts coming together, however, this could make the at-home viewing experience of live events much more exciting and give the "live" experience more accessible.
