Sports Hall of Fame in Sudbury to be located at Kingsway Entertainment District site

A new location has been chosen for Sudbury's Sports Hall of Fame but it won't be ready for a few years.

The sports exhibit plans to relocate to the Kingsway Entertainment District once it's built. The project is currently delayed as it makes its way through the provincial Local Planning Appeal Tribunal.

Dave Petryna with the group says initially, the attraction was supposed to be a part of the Countryside Arena in the south end. But he says they had to rethink the location after not being able to secure government funding.

"We always ran into some problems because those funding agencies didn't feel that the location was ideal for the Sports Hall of Fame," he said.

"[They also felt] the Sports Hall of Fame was just a local attraction and they were hoping that we could be more of a northern Ontario attraction."

He says the city suggested the group look to set up in the Kingsway Entertainment District.

"We drew up some plans and thought it was a really, really great plan for us," he said. "That's why we decided to take the city's advice and move over there."

Even though the project is delayed, Petryna says they don't mind waiting.

"The type of attraction that we're building really does take a lot of time as well, so their timeframe lines up actually very well with our timeframe," he explained.

"It's a two to three year process to build and finance and facilitate this sports hall of fame."

Petryna says it's also appealing to be located on a site which will be home to an arena, hotel, casino and conference centre.

"To be a part of that is good for the sports hall of fame because it's a more northern Ontario target market," he said.

"There are a lot of attractions and facilities that would complement with what we're doing. To be part of a larger tourist attraction is really the draw for us."

Petryna says the future sports hall of fame would have more of a regional focus and would likely be renamed the Northern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.

Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame reveals class of 2020 inductees

There hasn’t necessarily been a whole lot to celebrate in the world of local sports these past 12 months, but the Greater Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame is hoping to change that with the induction of the Class of 2020/2021.

Five Olympians headline an impressive group of nine individuals, a set of siblings, as well as a legendary local sports team.

Jim Logan (hockey - Cortinad’Ampezza - 1956), John Beedell (sprint canoe - Rome - 1960), Gary Trevisiol (cycling - Los Angeles - 1984), Robert Esmie (track and field - Atlanta - 1996) and Tessa Bonhomme (hockey - Vancouver - 2010) are among the group which also welcomes the inclusion of the inaugural Norm Mayer Memorial Sports Dynasty induction.

The Capreol Fastball Mazzucas will be the first to fill that slot, as an organization, recognized for years of excellence on the diamonds that would culminate with several provincial championship banners for teams representing the northern railway town.

Rounding out the Class of 2020/2021 are:

  • Gary Foy - nordic and alpine ski - Builder
  • The Fielding Brothers - Carman, Cliff and Cecil - boxing - Builders
  • Christine Jaworski - arm-wrestling - Athlete
  • Brent Hatton - golf - Athlete
  • Terry Crisp - hockey - Athlete/Coach

Given the current pandemic, the decision has been made to delay the annual sports celebrity dinner until such a time that the local sports community might be able to safely gather to celebrate in larger numbers.

In pioneer days, there were no organized sports, as farmers and their families had little time to devote to leisure activities.  But when they finally could take a break, on field days such as the annual picnics organized by the parishes, they would hold ball games, races and various other competitions.  Fishing in the valley's many lakes and streams as well as hunting in the fall helped feed the family while providing pleasant moments of relaxation.

In 1947, there were baseball teams in Blezard Valley, Hanmer, Azilda and Chelmsford, making up the Senior Valley League.

In Hanmer Township, it was not until 1949, when the municipal council considered building a municipal hall that would be used for athletics that talk began about establishing an athletic association.  At the time, a joint committee from Capreol and Hanmer already looked after an outdoor skating rink and playing field.

In the 1960s, merchants opened three bowling alleys in Hanmer, Capreol and Val Caron.

As soon as arenas opened in Hanmer and Val Caron, hockey teams were organized either for the pleasure of the sport or for competition.  Starting in 1971, the Valley East Figure Skating Club took on other local clubs in an Interclub competition.

Since 1981, Club Richelieu de la Vallée has been organizing an annual family hockey tournament.

A Hall of Fame was established in Valley East in 1998.  Its first athletic members were Frank St. Marseille and Ron Duguay (both hockey veterans), Lucien Chevrier (a bodybuilding veteran), and Rolly Barriault (a wrestling veteran).  Some professional athletes are also in the Hall of Fame including figure skater Amanda Maurice, and hockey players Andrew Brunette, Darryl Lafrance and Shannon Hope.  Among the names of the amateur athletes who received this honour were Melissa Junkala and Mike Comeau in hockey, Kelly-Ann Thompson-Guillet in swimming and Nathalie Menard in the Para-Olympics.
