WHEELING — Alexander Reinke has never visited the city of Wheeling. His first day in the Friendly City will be one for the memory book as he made his way to Oglebay Park to compete in the Bordas and Bordas West Virginia Open on Thursday.

In his opening match against William Sirianni, the Bethesda, Md., native posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the round of 32 to advance in the annual event.

“I felt I played pretty well,” Reinke said. “I was hitting pretty solidly on the baseline. My serve was working, so overall pretty good. Hopefully, I can carry it on through the rest of the tournament.î

Reinke, who is the fifth seed in the Men’s Open Singles bracket, has played in West Virginia, and although itís his first time in Wheeling, he is looking forward to the experience.

“I have never played here,” Reinke said. “It’s a four-hour drive outside of (Washington,) D.C. It’s nice here. West Virginia is a nice state. The course is really nice. I don’t get to play on clay very often.

“I’ve been to West Virginia and played a tournament in Morgantown. I played down at Greenbrier, but I’ve never been to Wheeling before. It seems like a nice place. It seems like it has a nice community here and has a lot of good places to eat. It should be fun.”

Reinke decided to make the trip to Wheeling for the first time after finding the tournament and feeling like he could add points to his ranking.

“There’s a top 500 list tournaments for the country. You get ranking points and this was one of them on the list,” Reinke said. “It’s pretty close to home and I felt like I could make the drive and hopefully get some points here and do well.”

Reinke, who will be a senior in college, has had a unique experience at the collegiate level. During his freshman campaign, he started playing at Southern Methodist University. Reinke ended up transferring to South Dakota State for the next two years.

Unfortunately, the university cut the tennis program this year.

“It came as a shock for all of us,”î Reinke said. “I really liked it out in South Dakota and Brookings. That’s the small town out there. It’s a nice community and I liked the school and the team. It was sad when they cut it.î”

For his senior year, Reinke will take his talents to North Dakota and play one final year in Grand Forks.

“I still wanted to be able to play tennis, so I looked for other opportunities in North Dakota,î” Reinke said. “I’m thankful for the coaches up there to give me the opportunity to come up and play one more year for them. I’m looking forward to having a good season.”

Another thing that Reinke is looking forward to is just to have a good time in Wheeling, while hoping that he can leave with the hardware.

“Just keep on winning,” Reinke said of what he’s looking forward to for the rest of the weekend. “Hopefully see how far I can go, just play every match one at a time and hopefully win the tournament. That’s my goal. Just got to take it one match at a time.”
