Grand Rapids &#; Xavier Tillman is so big and strong, even with two defenders hanging on his back, he still scores. It’s like watching a freight train with no brakes thundering through the lane.

The Grand Rapids Christian junior forward seems to enjoy the contact.

“It’s hard to stop me because I’m , ,” Tillman said. “So I might as well go to the hole, because all they can do is foul me since they can’t block my shot.”

Tillman, one of the top juniors in the state, had 24 points, 20 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead Christian past Wyoming Godwin Heights, , in front of a sold-out crowd at Christian on Tuesday.

Christian () is ranked No. 3 in Class A. Godwin Heights (), the defending Class B champions, is ranked No. 1 team in Class B.

“It was just a fun game,” Christian coach Mark Warners said. “(Godwin Heights) coach (Tyler) Whittemore and I were talking before the game about what a fun atmosphere this was. We’re going to try to keep scheduling it.”

James Beck, a junior, scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half for the Eagles. He also had seven rebounds and two blocks. Duane Washington, a sophomore, had just one point in the first half, but had three 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 13 points and seven assists. Thad Shymanski, a junior guard, hit some big shots in the first half, added 11 points and three assists.

“Thad’s a kid who does that all in practice, too,” Warners said. “We’re not surprised at how good he is. He had 15 points on Friday against Lowell. He put up some big shots (tonight) when we needed it and handled their pressure really well. He kinda slinks around and then all the sudden hits you with the dagger.”

Tillman scored five seconds into the game and the Eagles led at halftime.

Warners said he’s not surprised by anything Tillman does. But it helps having a couple of big players in practice to keep him honest.

“Once he catches the ball, it’s hard to defend him,” Warners said. “You can defend him from catching the ball sometimes. But if we get the ball down low, he’s tough to defend. Just ask some of the guys on the team who have to try it in practice.”

So who is Tillman’s toughest competition on the team?

“I think Jonathan Winkle, who is a senior, is the dirtiest one out here, the most physical,” Warners said of the forward. “But Andrew Mulder is the most physical, he’s No one else really wants to go in there.”

Tillman knew he had a size advantage over the Wolverines.

“Be aggressive. Be really aggressive,” he said of his approach. “I knew they didn’t have a true big man, and I didn’t think anyone on their team could stop me.”

Another player who was hard to stop was Beck. He’s big, long and a difficult matchup.

“JB? He’s a killer; he’s a beast down low,” Tillman said with a smile. “He’s a real versatile player, he can go inside and outside. He’s really good with the ball in his hands.”

It was a tough loss for a strong, athletic Godwin Heights team. But junior guard Christian Rodriguez, who had 19 points, said he’s focused on districts when the Wolverines open with No. 9 Wayland Union () on Monday.

“It’s a good experience and a great crowd,” said Rodriguez. “It’s just getting us ready for Wayland. That’s the only thing that matters. Even though we lost (tonight), the records start in the postseason.”

Warners was impressed with Rodriguez, who stepped up when teammates Leon Redd and Lamar Norman had a hard time scoring.

“Christian is a really good point guard,” Warners said. “He’s really smart. If he shoots it like he did tonight … he’s really good. He’s athletic and handles the ball really well.”

Norman, an outstanding sophomore forward, was held scoreless in the first half and finished with 13 points overall. Redd had five points.

“I was proud of how hard we played on defense tonight, specifically on (Norman),” Warners said.

Zeeland East blitzes Godwin Heights

Mitch Rietsma

After the first touchdown, Zeeland East coach Derek Pennington said he honestly couldn’t remember much after that.

That’s OK — if the Chix scoring a touchdown is all he can remember of their game at Wyoming Godwin Heights, then his memory serves him correct.

Zeeland East blasted its opponents with seven touchdowns in a first quarter that lasted 45 minutes and went on to win Thursday.

PRIME PERFORMERS

• T.J. VanDyken, Zeeland East. The quarterback completed 2 of 2 throws for 52 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for a touchdown.

• Mitch Rietsma, Zeeland East. Rietsma led the Chix defense with eight tackles in a shutout effort.

• Brad Horling, Zeeland East. The running back scored touchdowns on both of his carries and finished with 61 rushing yards.

TURNING POINT

Godwin Heights had the right idea by not wanting the Chix to get the ball when it went for an onside kick to start the game. The only problem is Zeeland East recovered it with a short field, and two plays later, VanDyken ran for a yard touchdown.

KEY STAT

20 — Number of offensive plays run by Zeeland East for the game. The Chix scored 10 touchdowns. That breaks down to a score every other play.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

• “I’ve never scored that many in a game. I think when I was at (Kalamazoo Loy) Norrix as an offensive coordinator, we scored 66 against Coldwater.” — Pennington

• “Honestly, we kind of outmanned them. I don’t know. They don’t look bad when you look at them, they just had a hard time stopping us. … Our kids played hard, and we played with class and I’m proud.” — Pennington

BOTTOM LINE

Zeeland East () heads into its OK Green Conference opener next week with Hamilton well rested as the Chix played all 42 that were dressed. Pennington will have to keep them focused, because unlike Thursday, they won’t be able to walk all over their upcoming opponent.

WYOMING — Manistee’s football team had a few too many mistakes, a few too many penalties and not enough offense in Friday night’s season opening game against Godwin Heights at Wyoming’s Carl B. Bahre Stadium.

Playing on a hot and humid night, in a game originally scheduled for the fifth week of the season but moved to the first when Mason County Central had to cancel because of COVID cases, the Chippewas got off on the wrong foot with a non-conference loss.

Manistee dodged a bullet early in the contest when Caden VanSickle recovered a Wolverines fumble at the Chippewas’ yard line late in the first quarter.

The Chippewas proceeded to march down the field behind the powerful running of Connor Beaudrie, reaching the Wolverines’ 20 before the drive ended when Manistee threw a pass interception.

Godwin Heights immediately capitalized on the Chippewas turnover, the Wolverines quarterback connecting on a pitch and catch that covered 84 yards for a touchdown. After the kick for the extra point went wide, the Chippewas trailed, , with left in the second quarter.

Another Manistee miscue, a bad snap on a punt attempt that sailed over the punter’s head, led to a yard touchdown run by the Wolverines with left in the half. The two-point conversion made it at the intermission.

VanSickle stopped another Godwin Heights drive short at the Manistee 30 when he made his second fumble recovery of the night just before half.

Godwin Heights took the second half kickoff and marched down the field for its third score of the game with remaining in the third period for a lead.

Manistee turned the ball over again on its next possession after the ensuing kickoff on another intercepted pass, this time down in their own territory at the The Wolverines quickly capitalized on it to build a cushion.

The Chippewas penetrated inside the Wolverines’ 40 on their next possession, but another pass interception at the 25 foiled that attempt to get into the end zone.

After the defense rushed in to sack the Godwin Heights quarterback for an eight-yard loss, the Chippewas eventually stopped the Wolverines.

It signaled the start of Manistee’s only scoring drive of the night, as they pounded the ball on the ground until junior quarterback Jeffrey Huber punched it from one-yard out and Luke Kooy booted the extra point with left in the game.

Godwin Heights tacked on a last touchdown with to play in the game.
