2021 Summer League

Registration is Open!!

Dear Players and Parents,

We have some GREAT news!!

Dust off your basketball, lace up your Jordan’s, and come join us for the 1st annual PYBL Summer League.

The league will start on June 12th and end August 21st.  Games will be played at Meadowbrook Middle School on Saturdays from 9:00am - 2:00pm.  The cost for this will be $65, which will also include a PYBL Summer League T-Shirt. We are also going to offer a drop off price of $10, per session. This will be good for those of you who are not sure about your players availability for the entire season. We will be collecting the fees using Venmo @PowayYouthBasketball, the last 4 digits of the phone number is 7408. When paying with Venmo, please indicate your player(s) name when submitting payment. You can also pay at the door on June 12th with a personal check or cash.

Each Saturday we will pick new teams based on player eval during practice drills before game time. Teams will be divided into 3-5 players depending on attendance and will play as a team for that day. If teams are unbalanced, player changes will be made. We are planning for each player to play at least 2 - 20 or 30 minute games.  Please keep in mind that this is new and will probably take a couple of Saturdays to get the kinks out. Since the season will be starting very soon, we will not be ordering any new jerseys, we have leftovers from previous seasons that can be borrowed. We are asking that if you have one from a past season, that you plan on using it if it still fits..

We will NOT have referees at these games. The games will be observed by a board member and/or volunteer to make calls when it is not obvious. Please keep in mind there will be no COLLEGE or NBA scouts taking notes....

So with all that being said we will need some volunteers!! The first being coaches. Coaches will be selected by board members for each session.

If you haven’t coached before, then this would be a great way to start.  If you have, then please volunteer.

We will also be looking for game observers, people counters, scorekeepers, temperature checkers, and player check in/out.

At this time we will be following all CDC guidelines for Covid 19 protocol.  We will be doing temperature checks at the entrance and masks will be required of all.   We are limited on how many people we can have in the gym at one time.  We will be asking for only those that are volunteering, enter the gym.  Hopefully this will change very soon.

We currently have over 100 registered players, but some of you have been registered for quite some time.  Please respond ASAP to this email and let me know if your son or daughter will be joining us for the summer season.

IF YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER IS INTERESTED IN PLAYING THIS SUMMER AND HAS NOT BEEN REGISTERED, PLEASE CLICK THE LINK BELOW.

https://pybl.sportngin.com/register/form/754352483

Also, please let me know if you are interested in one of the volunteer opportunities that I mentioned above.

Thank you for your patience while we get things figured out.

Poway’s Jay Trousdale gets 700th career win

Welcome to The 700 Club.

On his first try, Poway High girls basketball coach Jay Trousdale reached a milestone no other girls coach in the San Diego Section has ever reached.

With a 67-25 victory Saturday at Canyon Crest, Trousdale clinched his 700th career victory as the head coach for the Titans.

“You never get into a profession for accolades,” Trousdale said. “The best thing about this record is that every girl over the last 34 years has a hand in getting me here.”

Trousdale’s career coaching record is now 700-266 in his 34 seasons.

Poway downed Canyon Crest 70-14 last Friday for No. 699, setting up Saturday’s milestone.

“With the pandemic, I thought this would have to wait until December,” said Trousdale, who turns 66 in April. “I’ve told a few of the alums after milestones of 500 and 600 that this honor is close to winning a CIF title.

“I thought once I retired from teaching (2017) I would be done coaching, but I’m still having fun, so no retirement thoughts yet,” he said.

The former point guard at Kearny joins an elite Fab Five of coaches — Kevin Kiernan (Westminster La Quinta, Santa Ana Mater Dei, 805 wins), Melissa Hearlihy (Mission Hills Bishop Alemany-North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, 762), Joe Vaughan (Ventura Buena, 761), Sue Phillips (San Jose Archbishop Mitty, 718) at 718 and Brian Harrigan (San Francisco St. Rose-San Francisco Sacred Heart Cathedral-Mountain View St. Francis, 703). Kiernan, Hearlihy and Phillips are still active.

“It’s really cool that I’ve done all this at Poway,” Trousdale said. “When I found out there are only five others with 700 wins at the end of the last season I sat back and had a wow moment.

“Winning 700 wasn’t even on my radar until I found that out,” he said. “And I know there are only two boys coaches in San Diego over 700 wins in Ray Johnson (788) and John Singer (727).”

Now in his 34th season at Poway, Trousdale has claimed 12 league championships as well as four CIF San Diego Section crowns.

“He’s had some amazing teams and some that were a work in progress the whole way,’’ said former player Kara (Milling) Hanes, who graduated in 1994. “I played two sports and instead of quitting basketball to concentrate on volleyball, I stayed on because I knew playing for Jay would help me become a better volleyball player.”

Trousdale played a tournament game at Poway as a senior at Kearny, beating a good Titan team before playing for Bob Kloppenburg at U.S. International University.

His first coaching game was also at Poway in 1978 as the JV coach at Kearny.

Trousdale’s first game coaching at Poway in 1987 came at El Cajon for victory No. 1.

“I did not think I’d still be coaching,” he said. “I was glad to get my first head coaching job, but I didn’t know what I was getting into.

“It took me until the early ’90s before I learned this is what I wanted to do,” he said. “This coaching thing has been the best professional decision I’ve ever made because, at one point, I was thinking I wanted to major in zoology while I was at Kearny.”

Trousdale said the proudest thing about his coaching stint was his teams have averaged 21 wins a year.

“I ask a lot of my kids,” he said. “The number of defenses we play, the number of inbounds plays and the amount of plays we use in our offense usually causes first-year player to have their heads spinning.

“I’ve been blessed with a ton of smart young ladies who can handle what I ask them to do,” he said. “I still remember Torrey Pines scoring the winning basket on an inbounds play with six players on the court.”
