FOR PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY

So you have invested in a mobile basketball hoop and are ready to set it up in the location of your choice. Well, at least it’s the location of your choice today. And that’s the beauty of the mobile system, if you need to move it later, you can.

But for now, you want to get it placed and ready for action. However, you also need to make sure your system is secure and stays put. You want it to have a firm base so that it reacts with the same action as a permanent system.

We have reviewed the various ways to secure your system and put together some pros and cons for each. Here is what we found.

Filling the Base with Water

Using water to fill the base is a common way to weigh down your portable system. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of this method.

Pros

  • Using water is easy to do and is also easily accessible.
  • If you need to move your system later, filling it with water will actually make it weigh less than if filled with sand. Water weighs about 8 pounds per gallon as opposed to sand that weighs 13 pounds per gallon.
  • Water will cost less than using sand or another method to fill the base.

Cons

  • Water can evaporate which can make the unit less stable and require refilling.
  • If the base cracks, leaks can occur and also make the unit unstable.
  • Unless emptied in the winter months or antifreeze is added, water can freeze and crack the base.
  • Using water is actually a pro and a con. It is a pro because it is lighter and easier to move. But it’s a con in that it’s lighter weight makes it less stable than a heavier alternative.

Filling the Base with Sand

Another popular alternative is using sand to weigh down your basketball goal. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of this method.

Pros

  • As mentioned, sand is heavier than water and weighs more. System bases can normally hold up to 35 gallons and at 13 pounds per gallon you will have over pounds of support for your system.
  • Should the base crack, you will notice sand where the crack is located but it will not leak like water does.
  • Sand is recommended over water because the system will be much more stable due to the added weight.

Cons

  • If you need to move your system later, it will be physically more difficult due to the added weight.
  • The cost of filling your system with sand is obviously more expensive that if you used your garden hose to fill it with water.

Other Solution

BaseGel Basketball Goal Portable Bases Polymer. This solution is on the market in 16oz size. When mixed with water, it will absorb up to pounds and turn to a leak proof gel.

Pros

  • Easy to add. Mix with water and fill the water to the recommended fill line.
  • Cost is much less than sand and can be mixed with water.
  • Even if the base cracks, the system will not leak.
  • Gel can be returned to liquid when adding a salt and water solution should you need to drain and move the system.

Cons

  • Still may be slightly less weight than an all sand base.
  • Small cost needed to buy the BaseGel product.

Other Considerations

Cinder Blocks

The use of cinder blocks has more risks than benefits. Whether you are using them to add extra weight or on their own, they can move, flip over or players could fall into them and be injured.

Bricks, Cement Bags or Sandbags

These are things that are also not recommended due to the fact that they are not secure, can be moved around during play and also cause injury.

How to Fill a Portable Basketball Base

. . . . . .

How to add water to your basketball base

We know you're excited to start playing on your new Lifetime Basketball Hoop.  But before you start shooting like an all-star, make sure you fill your portable base to ensure it is safe so your system will not tip over and get damaged, or possibly cause injuries.  These quick tips will help you fill your base properly so your hoop will be ready for you to unleash your Michael Jordan skills.

Filler Options
Lifetime portable basketball bases are designed to be filled with either sand or water, and each one has pros and cons.

Sand
• Sand is about 45% denser than water, which increases the system's stability making it more difficult to tip the system.
• Sand makes it more difficult to move the system on a regular basis if needed.
• Sand is more expensive and more difficult to put in the base, but it will not evaporate like water.

Water
• Water is significantly easier  and cheaper than filling with sand.
• Water can freeze and if you live in a cold region, the water may possibly crack your base. (Although, Lifetime bases are made out of high-density polyethylene plastic that is flexible enough to expand with the water when it freezes.)
• Water can evaporate over time so you'll need to check the water level frequently to keep it full and to ensure there are no leaks.

Filling Instructions

Sand
1. (Read your specific model Owner's Manual to learn how much to use of either filler option.
2. Lay the basketball system on the ground so it balances on the rim and the base plug is facing upwards.
3. Have an adult hold the pole down so the system does not tip up during filling.
4. Unscrew the base cap.
5. Place a funnel in the base hole and fill pour in sand.
6. Screw the base cap onto the fill hole.
7. Using two adults, slowly stand the system up on a flat surface.

Water
5. Use a garden hose to fill the base with water, leaving two inches at the top for expansion.
6. Add one tablespoon of chlorine bleach to prevent algae formation.  (Antifreeze is not necessary since Lifetime bases are made of polyethylene plastic which will expand when water freezes.)
7. Screw the base cap onto the fill hole.
8. Using two adults, slowly stand the system up on a flat surface.

Choose whichever option is best for you.  Just remember, if you ever have a cracked or leaking base, do NOT play on the system.  Instead, lay the system on the ground and contact Lifetime Customer Care for assistance.

Video answer: How to fill up your lifetime portable base

How to Weigh Down Portable Basketball Systems

Basketball goals dot many neighborhood driveways. Years ago goals and backboards were attached to trees in the yard, utility poles, or hung off the roof. Today portable basketball systems provide flexibility for homeowners on placement location and have adjustments on the height of the goal. Since the goals are portable, they need to be weighed down to keep the structure from falling in strong winds or from the weight of someone hanging on the net or rim. Properly weighing the base down ensures a safe and stable basketball experience.

Check in the owner's manual for your basketball goal on the size of your base. Most portable basketball goal systems have a gallon base.

Purchase 10 bags of pound sand bags from a home-supply store if your base is 35 gallons. Adjust the amount of sand you purchase if the base holds more or less than 35 gallons. Many fill their bases with water. However, water can freeze in the winter and crack the base. Water also weighs 8 pounds per gallon, so a gallon base filled with water would weigh pounds. The same container can hold pounds of sand, making it more stable and safe.

Pry off the hole cover to the base with a large flat head screwdriver. The hole cover should be located at the middle-back portion on top of the base with the goal standing.

Insert a large plastic funnel into the hole of the base. Cut one corner of one of the sand bags about an inch wide with scissors and slowly pour the sand into the funnel.

Lift the base up after pouring all the sand from the first bag into it by grabbing the pole of the goal and pulling it down. This moves the sand to the front of the base, allowing room for more sand. Repeat this after pouring each bag into the base. You might need help from another person to pull the goal down. Continue pouring sand into the base until it is full.

Replace the base cap over the hole, and push the cap down until it fits snugly.

Tips

For added safety, and if you live in a windy climate, purchase one to two pound sandbags and lay them over the sand-filled base.

Warnings

Do not use water mixed with antifreeze in your portable basketball base if you own pets. The smell of antifreeze attracts dogs and cats, and cause death if ingested.

bball base casinoextra.frNow that you've had some time to assemble that new Lifetime Portable Basketball System you got for Christmas, let's cover a few important things that every basketball hoop owner should know.  (Yes, that means this is important for you to read even if you aren't a brand new basketball hoop owner.)

Portable basketball systems are convenient. You can purchase a Lifetime Basketball System and be playing basketball the same day. However, when you assemble a portable basketball system, it is important to always follow the manufacturer's instructions very carefully.  And, that means right down to the final instruction about filling your portable base. I have seen lots of systems with weights, bags of cement, or bricks on top of the base to hold it down - like in these pictures. This is a big "no-no" and very dangerous.  We rigorously test our basketball systems and write our specific instructions for a reason.  Most websites will state that portable systems aren’t very heavy, and they usually aren’t. But not filling the base up properly can cause your system to tip over and get damaged, and possibly cause severe injuries.

bball base casinoextra.frOur instructions (which are all available on our website if you lost yours) indicate that there are two ways that you can fill a base  - with water or sand. (Be sure to read your specific model instructions to learn how much to use of either option.)  Obviously, water is significantly easier  and cheaper than filling it with sand, but this is not my professional recommendation. Remember water can freeze, and if you live in a cold region the water may possibly crack your base. (Although, Lifetime bases are made out of high-density polyethylene plastic that is flexible enough to expand with the water when it freezes.)  Another concern I have with water is if your base gets a small leak, the water could leak out unnoticed and the unit could fall over possibly breaking your system, or worse, causing injury.

Therefore, I recommend (and we recommend in our instructions) to use sand. Sand is denser and heavier, and filling the base with sand creates a much more stable pole and backboard. Some of you may be concerned that using sand makes the system extremely heavy to move.  You are right, it does.  Your child certainly will not be able to move this system and it will be difficult even for a strong adult.  But, you will be surprised to learn that the majority of people I speak with who have a portable system really don’t move it that often. So, it is worth the extra stability and safety precautions to fill with sand.

So, if you fill the base, what happens if you are moving and want to take your hoop with you or you simply want to sell it?  I'll be honest, emptying a base is very difficult. It can be done but I would say once you fill the base with sand, don’t plan on emptying it unless you absolutely have to. Even when filling the base with water, it is very hard to get all the water out of the base.

Another important thing to keep in mind as a basketball hoop owner is to make sure you have your system on a level and safe surface. While it is tempting to place a basketball system on the sidewalk or end of your driveway to make the street your "court", this is very unsafe for both players and drivers.

Finally, since it is winter right now, whether you are a new or existing basketball system owner, check out these helpful winter basketball hoop maintenance tips to help keep your system like new in our previous Basketball FAQs During Winter Months blog post.
